Berries are necessary for sure but most towns have so many that you end up draining all of the wells too soon. 75% of compost goes to berries and no one bothers making kraut or popcorn for babies because they can just eat berries. It takes so many man-hours to maintain and those hours would be better spent on something else.
Please consider not planting 100's of berry bushes.

I have been trying to get people to plant plots of 3x3 spread out around the town insted of huge clusters. It only works to start that as an eve. Endless fields of berries help no one. Needs to be more small plots spread so we can make pens and such around them.

What is the most soil and water efficient food that isn’t too high tech?
Offline
At the moment a mix out of all food combined.
Eat one berry, one carrot, one popcorn as a small kid and you got 3 more food bars. Then repeat. When you are grown continou but add more food that gives you more food bars.
It helps a lot. We should also consider storing all food sources. At small depots around the city so you can find always food and also different kind of foods there.
Also it should be teaches to kids and new players why it makes sense.
The need for food will drastically reduced.

The YUM bonus very good once a town develops a couple different food sources.

Berries do not require tilling after the first plant...
This is why they are still the best. <3

Its true. Berries are long term sustainable better than carrots. If people rotate carrots with berries for small bonuses you will end up using so many more hoes. Maybe a carrot if you have a real yum going, but its just not worth it otherwise.

Like zennyrpg says, all good pimps care for the longevity and health of their hoes.
One must not be wasteful.

tilling cost a lot in long therm so berry keeps cities alive
berry meta meant it had only water cost which was way too cheap
but before it was 60 min and only some of us made compost/feed sheep
now everybody could/should for cheap clothes and sustainable fields
i dont mind about their size, yes it would be better to have soil prepared and only extend if compost runs and dont extend every direction, put them on 4 corners of city or next to roads
popcorn would save huge on food, as i think most of food is wasted rather than waiting out hunger, you wait out moving somewhere and eat before
carrot pies could work when there is so much grain leftover from basket making/compost
they not ideal but still compact
as bowls and plates are limited
carts should be made, go out to a swamp, make baskets, bring clay
make 4 feeding stations on 4 corners of town and storage for bowls/plates
stew pots could be spaced out instead all same place
if you are female you are responsible to teach your kids
and provide for them so instead dumping them to berry field, create a new one, like 3 bushes other corner
a family is like 8 persons, in one screen, more than that should go a screen away
have new oven, new berry field , new of everything

I think I'll do 3x3 plots from now on as eve. If I ever find a good start area lol And my kids dont suicide.
Large berry fields let not so good players sit still and munch away. If the plots are spread out then better players will find them and live.

you guys do raise some good points about hoe usage. i suggested having to use shears to prune them at one point. that would add some steel to equation and reduce their utility a bit. hopefully we can find a middle ground on the berry farms.

Berry bushes are good for a multitude of reasons.
1). They don't require mass tilling every single time you want to grow more. Because of this you can ignore mass producing hoes in the early game as stone hoes can just turn out to be crap. If you've ever busted one on six or seven uses you'll know how frustrating this can be. Buff stone hoes to at least have a bare minimum amount of uses so you at least know when you'll be needing another one.
2). Berry bushes are incredibly forgiving. You have 92 minutes before a bush is even going to die and be unusable what so ever. Two minutes after the last berry is taken off leads to languishing. Languishing lasts 30 minutes until it goes dry and dry lives another hour before actually dying. Compare this to any of the seeding crops. Carrots take four minutes to grow and another five minutes to seed. If you do not pick these carrots in their time frame you lose all the carrots + the plot you planted them in. Berries can just be left on the bush indefinitely without worry (unless someone is leaving every single bush at one which can lead to issues down the line.) Either have berry bushes be less lenient with their death timers or have domestic bushes shed leftover berries after some length of time.
Berries are going to be king as long as they're easy no matter how taxing on water or soil.
fug it’s Tarr.

I agree, we need more people planting crops three by three. Huge berry fields are too hard to maintain and are hard to organise.

The worst is when people use the soil left near the berry farm to expand the farm not feed it. Dumping a little extra soil is not an invitation to plant more bushes while existing bushes are going brown.

worse when i made two composts, one was one minute earlier converted, placed near wheat farm, and biatch hoarded to berry while one was already there and she put all on it, and when finished the other was ready, while i ran out of carrots cause people ate it
luckily somebody else made some compost too, so i coudl fix it, but while berries are not yellow and you got a composting compost near it, why the heck do you take it from wheat/carrot?
