a multiplayer game of parenting and civilization building

So here's the idea that's currently simmering...
If you say "CURSE YOU RON JEREMY", the account associated with the nearest character named RON JEREMY (or a recently deceased character by that name) gets one negative point
If you say "BLESS YOU RON JEREMY", the account gets one positive point.
Each character only gets one "vote" for Ron Jeremy. Cursing the same guy multiple times does nothing. Though blessing him will take away a previous curse, and vice versa.
Everyone automatically moves back toward 0 slowly, over time, maybe 1 point per hour.
The effects of accumulated negative or positive points are ONLY cosmetic.
If you go far enough negative, in your next life, you are born with black speech bubbles (black background, white text). If you go even farther negative, you get black speech bubbles with red text. If you go even farther negative, you are born with a little Hitler mustache. (Just kidding.)
If you go far enough positive, in your next life, you are born with blue speech bubbles (celestial blue with white text). If you go even farther positive, you get blue speech bubbles with golden text.
Curse/blessing has NO OTHER EFFECT on where you are born, or which family line, or anything else. It just changes how your speech appears.
Thus, it leaves it up to your mother. Will she give you a chance?
And you might try to remain mute to try to hide your status. Again, mother's choice.
As far as what will happen if someone has no name..... name your babies, people!
As far as what to do with a griefer during that same lifetime (because the curses don't actually hurt them), that is what killing is for, or imprisonment, or however else you want to handle it.
As for how hard it is to mouse over a moving person to determine their name, I will think about this. But it will still work post-death for a while, so you will be able to mouse over their grave. Maybe it will work for an hour after their death. So it can become a family tradition.
"His name was Robert Paulson"

Ah, what if left/right arrow keys cycle through names of nearby people with curse/bless auto-filled?
Pressing LEFT repeatedly cycles through:
CURSE YOU RON JEREMY
CURSE YOU JOHN HOLMES
CURSE YOU PETER NORTH
Pressing RIGHT repeatedly cycles through:
BLESS YOU RON JEREMY
BLESS YOU JOHN HOLMES
BLESS YOU PETER NORTH
Figuring out someone's name should be an interesting part of the equation, but exact spelling should not be important. This would eliminate that problem. Also, if a griefer is running around to avoid mouse-over, and non-griefers are not, you could figure out their name by process of elimination by paging through the list.

Great idea!

Is this an hour of playtime or an hour of real time? I think it should be playtime or else a griefer just logs on every night for an hour or two until they are well cursed, logs off, and comes back the next day clean.

Wouldn't that be just a bit of an ugly aesthetic? Colorful speech bubbles in such a sober, natural world? Kinda makes me think of Habbo.

Slower decay time please. People on discord was agreeing how awful and griefy the main server was all day yesterday.

Can we have more fun, ohol culture specific words instead of religious ones?
“Boar you Ron!”
“Starve you Jack!”
“Gooseberry you Mack!”

I think crown people should have their text bubbles in green as told before.
You can bypass this comestic thing by not talking at all.
I will try to get the red and black one, so hardcore.

Yeah, I guess the decay will have to happen per unit of playtime.
As far as colorful speech bubbles, I don't think the white text on black background will be too garish.
The blue will definitely be garish. I guess I could drop that part of it. The blessings will just counter-act negative curse points, and that's all. A big positive score does nothing.
Who really wants to be born under a "halo" anyway? More likely to make them a target than anything else. Goody-two-shoes over there with the heavenly speech bubbles. When he's not looking, I'm going to piss in his apple juice....

How many curses/blessing would be needed to make an effect?
"I came in shitting myself and I'll go out shitting myself"
Offline
Not talking at all... wait until your x y/o
Drop in blood text ''x killed me ! AaaAHHH KILLLER''
PROFIT

If you move back toward 0 by one unit every hour that you play, that means that if you anger at least two people every life, you will eventually descend infinitely negative, passing any threshold eventually.
So... maybe 5?
Remember, blessings in between can counteract.
Also, I just realized that I don't want people tossing around curses and blessings casually, the way people do with "I'm reporting you" in League.
Cursing (or blessing) someone should be a big deal, and it should have a cost. It should be saved for the most egregious cases.
I'm leaning toward each player getting to curse at most ONE person per lifetime, and likewise bless at most one. So they get one negative point to spend, and one positive point.
Actually, maybe it should be even more expensive. Maybe they get only one point to spend at all, positive or negative.
This will also keep a griefer from running around the village cursing everyone.

RedBug, your mother needs to get her act together and stop naming all of her babies Steve.
If not, then she's a griefer herself and should be cursed.

Most trolls are the people with no name. They often intentionally run off from their mothers so they can't get a name, and sponge off some other mother until they're old enough to cause trouble.
How about a snapshot system?
When you press ESC it makes a snapshot of the screen so you can directly click the person you want to curse?

Maybe screening or discrimination should aim at the role not the player. They kill or disturb others, that's their way to play the game, some griefers so creative and smart (even it shows in destory XD).
One hour one life, when a life over, everything clear zero. That gives less pression at playing and gives griefer chance to play a good guy in next life if they want.
ps: Love the Hitler mustache idea soooooo much.

This is a very good point if curses are name specific wont griefers wanting to avoid it just avoid being named?

Greifing isn't a real issue, if your tiered of the greifer winning then only spawn as a girl and make babies yourself. The combat mechanic in this game is so uncomplicated someone has a knife then run. I like the drama in the game, I have had people threaten death because I took their basket. Adding an update like this will not be adding content only taking more options away from the player base.
Grandma tells your mom to starve you as a baby because there isn't enough food, while she makes a stupid sign. Growing up to craft a knife or bow to kill that troll might be your best play-through all week. I don't think "curse you Grandma" will provide the same sort of exciting game play that first attracted many of us to this game. Life is exciting and fragile, so it should be the same in this game.

How about the option to curse someone by saying there relation to you. Like if your nameless brother is griefing you'd say "I curse you brother" .

Just said " bless/curse you nameless", it's ok, to aviod be miscursed (or share your fame with others) player will pay more attention to the name when life start and always ask mom give you a name,a unique one better.
Ps: A baby born be negative, that is wired, we all shaped by enviroment. For example if I was abandon by my mom, I will feel worse that life and greater probability I will hate the world. Otherwise a great mom or elder will give me much strength to be a good guy.

Blessing or cursing someone should take a bunch of food pips, like ten or so. So you better have food ready, otherwise it'll be your dying curse.
Actually, this means people who are murdered can use their last words to curse.
Like the Magicians in the Dresden files. FYI.
Definitely one per life.

The Nameless poeple being able to get around it though.... That seems way too easy to game. Babies can easily jump off mothers, it's happened several times when I'm naming someone.

Or.....
The abandoned baby will hold a grudge, Take advantage of bleeding hearts so they can grow to grief.

Make babies unable to jump out of their mothers arms for the first minute (infant stage) so there's time to name them, crawling during that first year would be adorable!
