The situation with translations

Years ago, I used to try to maintain translations for my software projects.  Over the years, I ran into many problems, however.

The software would change, but the translations would lag behind.  I'd have to get in touch with the translators and ask them to update their translation files.

There are HUNDREDS of languages in the world.  Keeping track of all those translation files, especially for changing software, and all those authors, is impossible.

So, I decided long ago to stop maintaining translations of my games.  I release my games in English, and then let community members manage and share their own translation files.

And for this game, which will be updated weekly with new content (and thus new strings to translate), it's even worse.

I don't know how translators can even keep up with the job of translating this game, nor how they will manage the files.  Probably some third-party software will need to be written that pulls updates from a translation server.  Anyway, I don't know!

But you're welcome to try, and perhaps post links to your translations here.

Re: The situation with translations

Thank you for these words Jason. The situation is very clear.
So the idea would be "I'll let translators do what they can, but I won't manage it".

The easiest might be to set up a GIT (I am not very experienced with it, but I see most of my developer friends using it) where anyone could contribute (create a new translation, update their translation).

A question is "How many users would there be per language", and will players stand to have a mix of English and their own language in the game... But I guess that for some languages with many players such as Russian, Chinese, German, maybe French and Spanish it might work.

Re: The situation with translations

I guess the ideal way would be to create a github account, fork this repo: https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLifeD … er/objects and modify the objects description. When Jason makes an update, merge from his repo.

Re: The situation with translations

@nywix but would it be a problem for you to have a mix of french and english words ? Because unless have we enough people dedicated to translate over long term, that's what will happen.

I guess that's what Jason's concerns are.

How exactly will be the process and integration of the translations into the application? I don't get it clear and I am interested on the translation issue. I don't see how users will be able to change the language, and as I see in that directory, each file has one and only one description. So I really don't understand.

Thanks!

Re: The situation with translations

Hello everyone, I just discover the game yesterday and got really excited, it seems amazing.

Would gladly help, I just sent out a pull request to the github repository I'm sure we can make it multilingual easily... in the meantime, for those who want to help out translating here's a link to some files containing a list of all objects in the game, feel free to get started translating it won't actually be reflected on the game until Jason decides if and how the translation will be implemented

Here are the lists, you can just open and edit them, please keep the original text as is and use the second column to fill in the appropriate translation

Re: The situation with translations

Hi Illap, not really sure, I was just reviewing the list and there are quite a few strange items we should skip them for now.
Google drive seemed like the perfect solution for colaborating at this point, is easier than github and that way we don't have any risk of contaminating the game data.
I will be working on a few tools to help implementing the translations for now. And I will lend a hand for spanish. but it will take some time. Thank you in advance and let's see what Jason thinks once he gets a chance to review it.

Re: The situation with translations

so .. the german list is nearly full ... I hope some Germans are able to help. Sometimes it is difficult because of the special names of tools for example ...

@Jason: is there a possibilty to use the translations?

@alle Deutschen die das hier lesen und Lust und Zeit haben sich die Übersetzung mal anzuschauen. Einiges kann man nicht wirklich sinnvoll übersetzen, aber vllt. habt ihr ja ne Idee. Es sind auch nur noch wenige offene Wörter. Die ein oder ander Übersetzung kann man sicher diskutieren. Am Ende kommt hoffentlich eine für alle die es wollen deutche Version des Spiels raus.

@all: if the translation ist ready, perhaps a minimum of 3 people should check it and after that Jason can use it. ...

after every update we have to update the translation either. until that time, we have to live with a mixed language perhaps ...

have a nice week!

@ Ilap Ich bin gerade über die Zeilen gestolpert.
Ich würde mich freuen, wenn wir was brauchbares rausbekommen. Hoffe sehr auf eine deutsche Version des Spiels.

Re: The situation with translations

I've just started Polish translation on google drive. Hope to finish it through night. Would be nice if there was any other player from Poland who could double-check and give his own ideas. Some names have ambigous translations.

Re: The situation with translations

Hello, i would love to help with the hungarian translation!

I suggest to make a translation channel in the offical discord server to discuss translations.
Also, this open google drive thing is not troll-proof, we should make it more private.
I will start the translation process tomorrow, there aren't many strings, so it shouldn't be long, but i have no idea how to translate some words, so a proofreader or just another hungarian translator would be neat.

PM me on discord if anyone needs me, Thexus#3774 (I'm on the official server)

I look forward to see this awesome game develop!

Re: The situation with translations

Hi @jasonrohrer and users, im Cryptodream, from the Spanish translation team.

We have some questions that are common to all the translations.
Should we translate...???

·Words with the symbol "#" . For example, "Hot Steel Blade Blank#flat rock"
·Words related to characters. For example, "Male008 C"
·Words with the symbol "@" . For example, "@ Full Portable Water Source"

I think those are all the "special" cases.

Thanks for all, im very excited with this game.

Re: The situation with translations

From what I have seen in building https://kazetsukai.github.io/onetech :

- # words will show whatever is before the #, so translate the first part and leave the # where it is
- words related to characters won't show in the game
- @ words are categories and might not show in the game at the moment, not 100% sure here
