Honestly, who even uses these? They're so impractical, you may as well just carry things one by one; it'll take just about as long. They seem more of a griefing tool than anything else. Yes, I know you can, and maybe should, turn it into a chest. Then, while you're at it, forge a lock and key just to be safe. But that's not the point. These feel like they're in the game just to be there. I would like it to be if someone is going to turn my box into a cart, they at least have to put a wheel on it and make it useful.
I suggest that we do away with sledges and just make it a transition phase from box to cart, (where you can remove the straight shaft). Thoughts?

+1 to removing straight shaft, sometimes it's just a misclick
Also, while we're at it, why it's not possible to put shafts on cart? You can put branches...
And chests without locks are just annoying - I don't understand why they are there at all. What's their purpose?

I use em, you don't always have wheels.
Also they don't decay so that is nice.
They are great for soil runs.

I use them to clean out the sheep pen of mutton/bones. Yeah a cart is better, but a sledge is convenient as noone will steal it.

They are just a transition from box to cart. So I am all for removing the straight shaft from them. Maybe if you hit it with a hammer you get the box and a straight shaft back or something like that. I don't really consider it griefing though, it isn't any worse than a box.

I suppose I hadn't thought about the fact that no one would take a sledge. They wouldn't even get very far if they did.

I mean, I wouldn't really consider them being "great" for anything, let alone soil runs. But it is interesting to hear that at least a few people use them, albeit hard to imagine. And while you may not have wheels at the moment, they're not terribly difficult to get if your already at boxes.

Well, as it stands right now, they're more than just a transition from box to cart. You can still use them, even if they're not really practical. And I personally think you wouldn't need any tools to remove it, just hand + sledge = box & shaft. This is, of course, assuming that the use of sledges were removed. And as far as griefing, I mean moving boxes that are sitting somewhere for a reason. For example, as part of a wall, or sitting next to a forge/oven full of iron or pies. As it stands right now, the only preventative measure is to make it a chest.

You mean the distant ones? Oh, that's why I see a sledge near dead body. You should do this like with the bell - multi generational soil runs.

I lilke that. Using their disadvantage as advantage. Once I put down the cart their mean time to be stolen is about 5 seconds.

Plus for this specific use you dont have to go far, so its not that bad

No, finishing it is putting all steel in it and adding a lock

No, finishing it is putting all steel in it and adding a lock
And then locking the key inside so no one steals your goodies <3

Yes, I suppose. Maybe I'm just being lazy, but it would be nice. I suppose I have at least learned a use for a sledge, seeing as they're probably not going anywhere. So net profit.

well, not a lot of new villages have made the tools to craft wheels, its still nice to have a cart of some sort, even if its slow

But that's what I'm saying. If you have the tools to make boxes, wheels should not be that far off. Okay, maybe if you're out of iron, but still. Regardless though, it seems some people use them and I kind of like the dynamic of "you probably don't want it, so I get to keep it".

The wheel barrow is worse imo. It's the middle ground between cart and sledge but there's no point to it since you upgrade it instantly anyway.

Yeah, I agree. We should get rid of them both
