I think to get the most out of OHOL we need to all strive for that perfect work life balance. I’ve tried in the past but I always get carried away with work or just end up doing nothing while saying dumb stuff to my fellow villagers. There has to be a good inbetween where you can develop relationships and get the most out of the social aspect of the game while still doing what it takes to keep the town running smoothly. Have any of you found this balance?

I have a pretty much set i stone early life where I make sure farming and composting is at least ticking over then I do whatever the mood takes me for the last 30 minutes or so. I think it's very much down to personal preference and mood at the time.. I'll alwys make sure I've put more into a settlement than I've taken out, at least in my opinion

i rush into composting era, if necessary i make tools, which is generally quite fast if no one blocks me, then make pen if needed
the other game i said hi to each of my little sisters and brothers, one was very nice to me in return and it was so good to go home and have a nice word from someone
mom also wanted to suicide but i just kept giving things to her, she gave it away but i didnt cared, she loved her babies so it was fine
i mean, jump to doing something on first few minutes, then just say hi to people or say something funny/nice
the later in the tech level, the less work needed, so maybe you can make group projects

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

Take breaks between chats or roleplay to do simple or fast jobs which still help, such as farming, baking, or building.

I farm while I roleplay to keep that balance going. I get to do a useful and easy job while doing something I like.

if ur a farmer u have a lot of time between harvests (as long as compost is being consistently made) so u can just chill with ur fellow berry folks. cooking is another chill job u can chat at.
otherwise u can escape into the wilds as a female hunter, raising babies surrounded by lush vegetation, safe from murderers (and help too since ur bringing back shit u hunted)

It really depends on my mood and the village I am in.
If it's evident that work needs to be done for survival, I bust my ass (or suicide if I am just not feeling it).
If I am in a thriving town, and I don't have a particular mission in mind (i.e., building a house/road/track/etc. or whatever), I might just fuck around and roleplay a bit with people.
But if I have a mission, I am pretty tunnel-visioned and will slave away to get something done.
Basically, if I can tell that fucking around is not going to actually hurt the village (i.e., my efforts aren't being depended on for the survival of the village), then sometimes I just have fun with it. Otherwise, I work.

Best stories you remember come from stoping to smell the flowers and chat a bit. Of course, no time for that when you are struggling for survival.
