made my pack
killed two bears, cut trees, got boards, digged bushes, made road
havent had time to plant last line, its a 3x4x2 berry farm plan was 3x5x2

you can use 1 flat rock 1 board, generally saves time and you wont slide around the berry farm when picking into bowl
24 bushes use one compost

2x of this setup should be able to support 20 people and composting if other food sources are present
leave the middle roads out when planting or place flat rocks and butt logs after 3 bushes

One compost can only sustain 24 bushes, I'd recommend two 3x4 patches.

oh yeah is 8 now, was it ten?
anyway you wont pick all down as its time consuming and better yum to consume it from bush and from bowl and less confusing for others, so switching one side to other can skip out the 8 min refill time

also sideways should be longer, not upward, then 3x4x4 fits on screen

I'm in large agreement with your original 3 wide column.
I'd point out that (depending on temperature) watering berries for 20 people would take about 4-6 deep wells very close by --- the closer the better.

When tending big farms, my body gets in the way when clicking above, so I'd prefer to tend berries from the sides, meaning the berry farm should be a tall/vertical. I'm a fan of 3x5 because it fits on a screen, but imo 3x10 wouldn't be bad, so long as it's near water.

yeah i tried horizontal today, looked nice and was great temperature but was weird to pick it from the bottom, still with a desert running east-west you get better temperature, i would advise 2 high and any wide but generally not more than 4? sideways you can pick from a tile away so might be better regardless of desert orientation, and roads are expensive and time consuming, thats why i cut off edges too

for a while i wasnt really a food person
but seeing this giant bush piles, sometimes no water near them, so i just make a new one next to water other edge of city, closer to pen
today was all this 3 things together so i made a new

other life i had berry next to the wall and their intention to extend it, so i planted milkweed (or wheat, as carrot or corn leaves hardened row which wont allow building road) and digged out the side near wall and made a road

sometimes i enjoy this solo style experiments
my original idea was checkboard road with berry farms, means you can be on any side of the bush and have empty tiles
if you think about road/bush ratio, a shared road is kinda half of cost than a side road, but checkboard is offset and as long as the pattern is consistent you dont even need roads on sides of it
the biggest lesson for new players is that free tiles are just as important as filled ones
i will try to make one alone or let others join in to experiment, i wonder if they keep a pattern if you make one

5x5 with a well in the middle also gives same area (24) and same benefits (never reach across more than 1 tile to farm) but is more compact so it uses 24 floors to fully enclose vs 30.

Plus, it has it's own dedicated water supply.

That cut middle piece could become an actual road, like, going down from the grass tile under the bear.

This design could work well away from water too, i think. There is room for cisterns in all edges. Theres just no reason to farm away from water currently. But few buckets, cisterns and a cart could sustain this for a while, specially if it is an offset location.

temperature is better than proximity to water
especially for berries, as its for noobs, kids and elders mostly so forces them to good temperature
people talk a lot and if you think about it, you save more time carrying bucket and you can put compost anywhere

I'm all up for carrying water myself, filling a cart with buckets is strangely pleasing to me but it's not something i've seen many people doing. Maybe if we build water roads with cisterns people will do that. But honestly, it has been a while since i don't get into a town where water is an issue.

good to have the easy solution in hands though.

one town had issues like that, with 3 buckets we couldnt fix food issues as people didnt know where to get water so they just took from the one i filled, this meant that composting became a problem and couldnt milk cow
now imagine even planting milkweed and fixing food same time, other edge of spectrum was a town where i made new berry bushes near the new well we made, so we could relocate temporarily the food until other wells fill, but it was desert there
if its more than 50 tiles away and you dont have tools for a bucket, its better to have (some) food next to water, but carrot, corn or just a few berry bushes. cisterns are placeable and if you got buckets and a nice small desert not more than 4 tile wide, than it has really nice temperature for berries, even other things, carrot or wheat just grows and you pick it off so not an issue of standing next to it
