Seeing how people want quick fix for dogs, something "written in a hurry on the back of paper towel". How about that.
Dogs have limited lifetime. Lets say 30 minutes (still longer than IRL dog lifespan, but not to short to be bothersome and not worth time investment)
Each dog can only be bred after 10 minutes when its "mature" enough.
Each dog can only be bred once or twice during its lifetime (to avoid "spamming" puppies from single bitch)
Fixes:
Immortal dogs blocking towns forever. Just give it some time and it will regulate itself.
To fast increase in dog numbers. You will need to wait for puppies to grow up before breeding even more. Thus, you can easier spot griefer creating to many dogs and stop him or protect mutton if you notice to many dogs. Special point in Jasons eyes - DRAMA controlled by players.
Technically:
Does not need new mechanics like dog owners or other solutions.
Reuses currently available concepts.
Young Dog + time (10-15 min) = Fertile Dog (with the same sprite even, maybe only visual clue with its tail position or something?)
Ferile Dog (uses: 2)?
Fertile Dog + tilme = Dead Dog
Fertile Dog (uses > 0) + Mutton = Fertile Dog (uses-1) + Puppies
Fertile Dog with 0 uses should not be a problem.
This solution does not require much work on Jasons part but gives relief to players during Dogocalypse untill Jason can develope the idea od dogs further.

well i don't understand why puppies grow on their own without being additionally fed, just lile lambs and calves.
As far as i understand, for now one piece of meat brings out 3 or 4 puppies that will auto grow to adults...
making them dying if not fed once removed from their mother would partially reduce the amount. At least if you accidently feed a dog because you were trying to empty the pen, and that can easily happen in a dog infested town, you won't add to the ever increasing load of dogs.
I will be eve tana. If not an eve, my kids will be called numerically : Primo, Duo, Tertio, Quattro, Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius etc... ending with an -a if you're a girl.

Even if all he did was let us pick up adult dogs we could force delete them in game. Obviously it makes a giant mess but unlike dogs I could clean that sort of mess up.

It would be enough if they just had limited life span and puppies starved if you didnt feed them, same as lambs.
In addition, I really like the idea of dogs following players around but returning to the place they were fed when no player is in range, so you could keep a few around bear dens or sheep pens. If feeding a pup was required to get a dog, it would follow that all dogs had a location where they were fed.

Is there any way to deal with semi tame wolves? Seems they are more deadly than regular wolves, since they actively follow you.
After getting killed trying to feed one, I'm guessing people are just leaving the mother wolf with one pup permanently, so it never reverts to semi tame wolf... or am I missing something?

Yes, sorry about this. Getting all those dogs in place was a lot of work, so the dog mechanics was a little half baked.
I'll hotfix it today.
Dogs are short-lived creatures, of course!
