expedition of the scholars

.It started as a dream, formed in the mind of a tiny baby.  Ruby couldn't have been more then a year old when she first heard the bell ring. It was the most beautiful sound she's ever heard.  Ruby was born in a poor village, clearly an outpost for a much larger civilization.  It was a strange mishmash little place with only a small berry farm, with just one cracked and breaking bowl, clearly a gift from a larger civilization. This little town didn't even have a forge set up, yet there was a hoe to til the soil and a wagon for her papa to cart soil from far across the desert and plains to add to their little farm.  Ruby was an eager girl and as soon as she could walk she jumped down from her mothers arms and ran off to put soil on their dying berry bushes. She worked diligently for a few years but all the while the bell called to her.  she wanted to see what a town that big mightlook like.  She imagined the riches that would await her if only she would follow the bell.  Then under the cover of darkness she stole that old bowl from her mothers basket filled it with berries from her fathers farm and ran away.  Ruby ran for years and years and years stopping only to add berries to her bowl when she began to run low.  Ruby ran through swamps filled with towering trees and the dreaded red eyed boars, then she ran through fields and fields of icewith snow difted all around, and adorable penguins sliding around the ice. She loved how the sun shone on the snow and almost forgot about her quest but soon the chill from the arctic winds forced its way through her fathers sheepskin and she knew she must carry on or risk dying in the fields of snow.  So, on she ran; through deserts filled with blooming cacti as far as the eye could see, through forests rich with food for her to eat, she grew tall and strong eating onions and roots in the forest one year.  Then all of a sudden she started to see chopped trees and Ruby got excited thinking she had found her bell. But soon she broke through the forest into the clear cut area where the village was constructed and she knew that her journey was far from over.  Noticing the rabbits around the village perimeter Ruby set about making a backpack for herself knowing she would be much safer if she could carry a weapon and extra food.  As Ruby worked snaring rabbits her first child was born, an eager girl she named Athena, (came as weldon bc fml) as Ruby recounted her story and told her of her quest the child eagerly agreed to come along.  A few short years later the child was grown, Ruby suggested she might make a basket, happily athena agreed and toddled off.  Ruby returned to her work, calling "good luck, i love you." out after the receding form of her first child.  As Ruby picked up the rabbit she had been hunting her second child was born; a pensive little thing Ruby called Andromeda.  This time Ruby thought better of her basket instruction and instructed Andi to fill a bowl with berries in preparation for their journey.  As Andi grew Ruby continued to work on her basket, placing the last stitch as a new child was born to her.  Soon Andi had hair and Ruby sent her on her way, haphazerdly calling "i love you" after her daughter as she cradled her new baby's tiny form.  This new child was a sweet little golden haired lass that Ruby called Arya, as Arya grew Ruby filled her a bowl of berries and explained to her the nature of their mission.  Arya eagerly suggested that she should come with and though Ruby felt some hesitation she agreed.  As Arya grew hair, Andi returned with berry bowl and it was time for the three to leave.  As they ran Ruby felt a pang of guilt for her lost daughter, she had never seen little Athena again, wished she had taken more care, instructed her child to take a but she had not, and running through dangerous woods does not provide time for self reflection and so she had to let it go.  The three headed east and as they ran the girls grew rapidly, soon they were both almost women, but, then tragedy;  Ruby stops to gather the group back together, but Arya is no where to be found.  Ruby is distraut, I dont know where she is, she cries to Andromeda.  Always level headed Andi suggests they go look for her, so off they run.  Ruby circles the area, she doubles back she sees no sign of her youngest child.  Ruby runs back to the spot where she last saw Andi, she is nowhere to be found,  fully panicing now Ruby runs around in circles searching for something, anything that may indicate where her children have gone.  She is running through a field a rabbitholes follwing signs of disturbed rabbits searching when suddenly Andromeda burtsforth from the woods.  Relief floods through Ruby's body, but then she sees the look on her daughters face.  "She is dead, boar got her." Ruby felt her world rip apart, but she knew she must keep strong for her remaining daughter, they were in the wilderness with no food in sight.  Gently Ruby took Andromeda by the arm and led her away from the woods sthat had claimed her sisters life, "we must keep going," Ruby said. So, on they went as they ran they discovered another field of ice, just as Ruby went to point out the beauty of the sun shining off the snow to Andromeda, her son was born.  She named the child Helios, an homage to the circumstances of his birth.  As they ran from the ice fields and burst forth into a lovely meadow, a distant realtive, a long lost cousin named Alex emerged from the trees.  "You searching bell?" he called.  Ruby responed "yes, we should go together."  "Of course" Alex assured her.  Then as the four began to carry on after the bell another, Ruby bore another child.  The girl was quickly scooped up by Andromeda now just as much a woman as her mother, given the name Alice and then on they ran.  Soon Helios grew into an independent little boy and Andromedas first son was born, then almost simultaneously Ruby bore another girl.  The girl was left behind but the boy, Ruby's grand son was carried by Rby until she grew too old then they all ran frantically east, Ruby stuffing food into the starving toddlers mouth as often as she could.  Soon Alice grew too large for her mothers arms and she began to run along side them, tthe group was starving,  first they stumbled across the body of Alex, theur poor cousin had gone to scout food and he starved.  They ran on, there was no time to stop to grieve everyone was starving.  Ruby grasped desperately for the extra pie she stuffed into her bag, so many years ago when her daughters were first born at the town so far away. she took a bite, then stuffed some into her grandsons mouth, then Alice's mouth, and finally she gave Andromeda the last bite.  ON they ran, desperately now, berry bowls long forgotten in the woods, with only helios carrying a basket with a berry, a stone, and a root.  A misty swamp appeared infront of them, much of the detail obscured but they could see the red eyes of many boars glowing from within.  They had no other choice, no food as far as the eyecould see north or south, the only way to go was east.  So in they ran,  suddenly a boar lunged from behind a tree and goared Alice.  The poor girl died there in the swamp, as she lay dying she called out her love for us all.  We were all starving, we knew we must carry on, and so we did.  Always running east, following the echo of a bell from so long ago.  Soon another baby is born to Andromeda, another boy, quickly she scoops him up as the y sprint on, stuffing berries and onions into eachothers mouths when they can. Soon they start to see signs of civilization, they come upon a small outpost but on they run without eaven stopping.  Then suddenly thtough the trees a stone building begins to materialize.  At long last they have arrived, The group runs around excitedly looking for others only to find they are alone but for a brother Ruby did not know she had also called from their tiny village by the ringing of the bell.  The two embrace and then Ruby runs off to find her bell, within moments she is standing at its base, the bell is ready to be rung.  Ruby looks around, at the dead civilization that lies at her feet and knows she must do what she can to call a new future to this town. Ruby pulls the rope and the bell rings out; almost deafening for Rby at its base but she does not care.  She loves the bell.  Now with her lifes goal complete and danger long past Ruby can look back, and once again she is ripped apart, so many lives lost, just for her dream.  She wonders if it was all worth itin the end?  Ruby stumbles through town, heart breaking when she comes across andromeda standing dejectedly on a warm tile, "i have four minutes left mom, I'm so sorry." Ruby quickly assures her that she doesnt care if there are no girls, and she doesnt.  As Ruby stands waiting for her death the memories of her life flood back to her, memories of her children, so many gone so young.  There is no way they could have known what would happen to them, turthfully, theres no way Ruby could have known about their end, but she never could let go because she did know, many years before when Arya asked to come with, Ruby knew it as a bad idea.  She should have given up the quest, raised her girls in the safety of the back pack town.
