From the sounds of it you were playing during the time when servers were updating. Basically All the odd (or even servers) will stop letting people in and start redirecting people to the next server down the list. So either you were on server one when it stopped accepting people to log in or you were on server two when server one opened back up and the game stopped sending players to server two.

Sounds like this could be an artificial cap on how long you can keep a civilization going.

I mean yeah it's exactly a Children of Men style end of civilization. However, this sort of thing normally only happens once a week around Fridays when Jason updates the servers, however we've never even gotten close to having a civilization go that long so I wouldn't worry about the artificial cap killing off long lasting lineages.

But yeah if you're aiming to have a lineage last you need to avoid the day(s) close to patch day.
