A little concern

I have a tiny concern.

I started playing after the Steam players began buying the game. I taught many, many people how to grow berries, and how to make fire, and how to get dirt. It's actually nice to have someone to teach now and again. The new players are a big, big plus, and I'm happy for more. But so far, I've only seen one shovel. No other iron tools, or even iron. One stone wall, and one knife made by a griefer.

The problem is, there's not enough iron to get past the "make berries appear" stage. Halving the amount of surface iron was okay before the new players, but it's so rare now that I looked through a huge wasteland and found no iron. Not even a vein. Nothing. Most towns die because there's no water or dirt left to make more food appear. It's *impossible* to dig a well or shovel dirt, because there is so little iron left. When we do find iron someone smiths a knife and kills the old people and boys instead of digging a well or making compost, or at least making more firewood to make pies with.

We need to bring the iron level back up until the "noobpocalypse" is mostly done. There will always be a new player or two, but unless everyone else has their stuff together, it won't be possible to teach them. If people can't figure out the game, or they get killed with the only knife in the server, they will leave. And nearly everyone wants to have more players rather than fewer, because it makes lives funner and keeps the game afloat.

So, basically what I'm asking for is that we raise iron for a while until everyone knows how to play, more or less. That way people will stick around to play the game, and everyone has more fun.

Thanks for reading my little rant. I'm mostly sure it's Jason's birthday today, right? wink

Re: A little concern

I think this is actually a pretty good idea.  The iron nerf isn't bad in principle, but it is making getting started from scratch even harder, and it's really hard right now.  Having to spend forever foraging for iron and not finding more than two pieces before I, the only person who actually knew how to smith, got too old to do it did kind of screw over an Eve camp for me the other day.

Re: A little concern

I found the perfect eve spot, but went out to find iron and realized that the badlands far north, south, and west were all empty.  How are we ever going to have railroads?  It feels like iron is a rare as gold these days.

Re: A little concern

Along with the iron nerf, reverse the shovel nerf and introduce the pitchfork for compost. With the limited iron its sad when I finally make a shovel and I set it down for a sec only to see it broken when someone decided to bury the hoards of dead bodies scattered around camp.

Honestly iron seems rarer.

While I agree with the OP's comment, I don't agree with making railroads in our current stage of the game.

What we have now are many many eve camps that are overflowing with babies that barely make it to adulthood before they die out. I spawned in a post sheep town, the only post sheep town in existence at the moment honestly because I could not find any others, and that's in the last few days!

With all this movement and the influx of new players, I find it very difficult to believe that somehow the eve (most likely a noob) will plan out the railroad system beforehand and built her town around it. Not to mention that fact that a track is at least one blade and a cart is one spring.

Also, the railroads are very much useless, other than their price, they only go north-south or east-west and can't go in any other direction. These inconveniences would litter a village if they had more than one of them, even just one small system is a waste of space, a cart or a horse with a cart would do a MUCH better job than these tracks ever could.

Sorry if this felt like an attack, just wanted to speak my mind. ^^

Re: A little concern

yes the iron nerf is a total bad move just now.
Iron is so hard to find, and shovels breaks so quick, we definitely need another tool for burying deads, and also switch from picking one potato at the time, to digging them up whith a hoe and picking them by hand.
It doesn't take into account all those new players that just waste shovel usage because they don't know what it does, and those that just go hide it because they find if funny to see the whole village asking around for it.

I will be eve tana. If not an eve, my kids will be called numerically : Primo, Duo, Tertio, Quattro, Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius etc... ending with an -a if you're a girl.

Re: A little concern

My pseudo-eve camp pretty much died out when we had only 3 iron existing within kilometre radius. That is insane if you ask me.

Only times I actually saw iron veins were so far from possible eve-camp settlements (I even checked this out with zoom-out I quickly coded out to see),
the spawning are really scarce, and eve has to be really lucky, or with eagle-eye to find good eve-location with at
least 1 iron vein to sustain family for at least 15 generations. That enough is like finding needle from haystack on eternal fire.
Whoever finds good iron veins and at least 5-6 iron ores nearby eve camp, will need his/her lottery ticket picked up, literally.

If you ever enter Pea (Helkama turns into random name) family, you need the lottery ticket picked up. My baby names given can be absolutely random.

Re: A little concern

You really dont need that much iron to have a village going for multiple generations, but right now even if you have a good village it ends up disappearing and you have to start from scratch, if you already have a good village with horsecarts for example, finding good quantity of iron is not an issue

Re: A little concern

Of course, but it's way harder to sustain generations when you barely have any tools to make any horsecarts, even when not enough to make pickaxe and stanchion kit.

Re: A little concern

I had set my camp in a good spot and even found one vein. But only one ground iron all around the camp. I couldn't send my girls to go search and my two sons I had send out, never came back.

How can I get more iron from the vein if I don't have enough iron to make the tools to get them ? I believe you need at least six of it to make the necessary tools to dig up the vein and make a stanchion kit.

I even feel that the number of veins is very small. So far in the past hours I have played, I have found two iron veins. And I searched.

Re: A little concern

i've found the first 3 iron pretty easily in a camp yesterday. Also got an eve spawn near a mine but didn't play that life.

We need to collect more data, people. But i kinda like that right now we're in bad camp hell.

@booklat1
New players won't stick around if it seems like noobcamp hell simulator. Make-Berry-Appear The Game is also no fun. That's why the iron concerns us. I played a few lives yesterday, and I saw one knife and no other iron. That's how bad it is.

You can't.

Tea wrote:

You need at least 8 iron, (if not doing the hoe or shovel) :

1. hammer
2. axe -> wood
3. adze -> fence kit and mallet
4. froe -> plank
5. file
6. chisel
7. saw -> round wood
now you can do stanchion kit
8. pickaxe

If people dont waste iron on second axe, another hammer or hoe, you're good with two trip foraging iron with a backpack and basket.

But you also need bow and arrow (for duck on file), a rope for the bucket / stanchion kit, and maybe a cart to be efficient (so another rope).

It's hard without the zoom out mode.

Re: A little concern

I was in a bustling settlement that was compromising on their stone-age status by using skewers to plant their crops. Amongst the chaos of new players I was barely able to get enough ground iron to have a few wrought iron left over after I made two hoes, an axe and a shovel.

In my sixty years I was only briefly assisted by one other player who was experienced while I tended the forge. The rest of the camp was more or less chaos. Nobody was confident enough in searching out for iron and I knew of some place where there was some, but knew that the time that it took to recruit someone would be better spent toiling away on making tools, raising my kids and when appropriate explaining why we had to let babies starve.

With this current state of the community, we need ample iron veins and ample ground iron.

I know that ^^ It was just a rhetorical question. If I can barely find the iron to make a hammer and an axe, how am I suppose to make all those other tools with only three iron near base ?

Even if I decide to skip axe, there is still seven iron ore I need to find. But skipping the axe would be crazy because that hatchet isn't going to last forever and it's a pain in the ass to gather those branches and keep the small fire alive.

And like you said, there are so many other steps to make before the stanchion kit is fully complete. And you still need to find that vein.

So yea, would be great to raise the number of ground iron a little bit. It's already hard enough to start a settlement as an Eve.

Funnily enough I just lived a life in which i got exactly 8 iron back to my camp. We already had axe which is great too.

You can't skip the axe. You need a butt log for the mallet to make planks.

Re: A little concern

I still simply suffer with finding ore or veins. No matter how long and where I run, I see nothing or like 1 ground ore. I'm at the brink of going omelette city here and leave farming for good. If I had a horse cart I wouldn't complain (this bad) but...
To get a horse, you need sheep (saddle). To get a saddle, you need sheep and shears. To get shears, you need 5 ores (hammer, chisel, file, two blades). Then pickaxe and stanchion kit.

And yes Eve camps... looking for iron isn't that fun. Making it take more time won't make it more fun. I'd rather have a processing system for iron than run around in the wilderness for 20 minutes for it. I just feel like this is a cheap way to add challenge and it is not a fun challenge at all. It's too luck based to be a good challenge.

I still think ground ore was fine as it was before and veins should be different. If it was changed so mines have to be dug deeper for more iron, that'd have been much better. Number of veins and their depth would limit cities without limiting Eve camps.

Re: A little concern

I actually agree with you. From what I've gathered, even if i get about 10 irons by myself in an early gen life (with no zoom) it's quite a a lot of work. That would be fine to me, but now that we're getting jungles, potentially making all biomes sparser or smaller, it may become simply not viable to keep iron as it is now.

Adding more tiers to mines would help a bit, but veins will definitely have to become more common and probably ground ore too.

Re: A little concern

What if a system for harvesting ore from ponds or mud were implemented? Iron bacteria occurs naturally in some surface waters, and it's possible to harvest mud containing that oxidized iron and smelt it into tiny prills that can be forged. The Primitive Technology guy does that here: https://youtu.be/DyGLE0usN_I?t=298.

I picked up 2 iron while looking for milkweed and food on an Eve run today (two separate trips), but that was all I saw in the small badland zones near my campsite. Those weren't as far out as a minute, though... more like 20-25 seconds - so there may well have been more a bit farther out.

Re: A little concern

Before the nerf, being a smith was an actual profession you'd do for a life for busy towns. Now it's just 99% running around and possibly dying to wildlife (I don't have the mod but this is honestly pushing me towards the zooming mods). I want to show new people how to process metal and let them smith, but I've turned into a Scrooge McDuck, clutching onto iron and steel (even considering hiding them) in order to make only the necessary tools. As one extra tool can spell a disaster, I run around the town and nearby wilderness before I dare to smith anything. And with the berry farm expanding newbies, they are constantly after hoes. I don't even want to think what kind of crap fest happens when a griefer starts hiding tools.
This is not fun at all. Smithing and iron is just stressful and like a choke collar on towns instead of a fun challenge of tracking veins and hauling ore.
This game and its spawning system is too random to do nerfs like this. I was never a fan of how it was nerfed and will never be, no matter if noobs become better or not. Even with the old values I still had to travel far to get iron quite often, but now it's just ridiculous. I burn so much food on each trip and there is 0 quarantee I bring anything back. I can't emphasize it enough, but making me do more running is not a fun challenge. It's tedious. Simple as that. hmm We would have gotten the "pressure from steel" by making mines demand more and give less, and that would have toppled over some towns without crushing Eve camps and early towns.

If it was "gamified" to be an interesting process, I'm in. If it uses shovels or steel tools, nope. But it all comes down to balancing it so it's worth the trouble. Ponds are crazy valuable already though, with water being... water, something we can't manipulate or make more of (how I wish we could with watering systems and drills). Maybe mud then, dunno. I'd still rather go back to pre-nerf iron and put time into some other content.

I agree that there is not enough surface iron right now, and it's going to get even worse when we get the Jungle biome this week (unless the Jungle has iron as well).
