denriguez wrote:What if a system for harvesting ore from ponds or mud were implemented? Iron bacteria occurs naturally in some surface waters, and it's possible to harvest mud containing that oxidized iron and smelt it into tiny prills that can be forged. The Primitive Technology guy does that here: https://youtu.be/DyGLE0usN_I?t=298.
If it was "gamified" to be an interesting process, I'm in. If it uses shovels or steel tools, nope. But it all comes down to balancing it so it's worth the trouble. Ponds are crazy valuable already though, with water being... water, something we can't manipulate or make more of (how I wish we could with watering systems and drills). Maybe mud then, dunno. I'd still rather go back to pre-nerf iron and put time into some other content.
This kinda reminds me of gathering minerals from sand with a special huge bowl. I think it would be pretty slow process, perhaps logically thinking it would give only 1-3 worth or iron bars from a pond over time, but it would sound like a profitable meta for coming evolution development.

IMO veins should be accessible sooner (get some iron when digging it out with a pick) but give less total ore and be more common. Surface iron hunt can just be a a step to get to pick, or even remove loose ore altogether and add stone pick. When scouting for spot as Eve it should be easier to find an adequate iron supply for future generations.

Haven't played for a few days, but I noticed iron's scarcity immediately after the update. Eve camps were hard enough to kick off in the first place, given the very specific terrain requirements for a potentially good settlement. But now, they're basically impossible, solely because there just isn't enough iron to get out of the berry stage.
I think one of the main contributors to this issue is how much ground iron we require just to mine a vein. We legitimately need to find 8 iron alone just to get at a vein. And guess what? By that point in time, you'll need maybe 4-5 of it for the rest of the tools you haven't already made.
Another big issue is that the entire nerf was based solely off game data, which claimed there was enough iron within a 5 minute radius to last a camp 200+ IRL days or some bs [which is irrelevant, I think, given the fact that most eve camps rarely lasted more than 15 hours alone.] But instead of basing any updates off his actual experiences playing the damn game, he relies on game data. I think this is the major flaw with his most recent updates and ideas.
He needs to play his own damn game more, so he can actually understand what his updates do and how they affect real gameplay. Running simulations in an empty test world and throwing out numbers given by a computer only gets you so far. You can't comprehend the frustration of dealing with griefers or running around for 40 minutes of your life trying to find iron without actually experiencing it.

Have any if you tried to spend an entire life gathering iron?
this is the only way we'll gather accurate data for wheter iron is too scarce or not. I think It's no scarce yet, but will be after jungles, as twisted said.

Before the nerf, being a smith was an actual profession you'd do for a life for busy towns. Now it's just 99% running around and possibly dying to wildlife (I don't have the mod but this is honestly pushing me towards the zooming mods).
Get the mod multi, it is vital right now with every one vet being outnumbered at least by a factor of 10. I can't imagine the pain of trying to hold this chaos together without it tbh at the moment!

I'd need to be born as an Eve or son of Eve so nobody has collected any iron around the camp. I guess I could do it, with the mod on though.
But would all my running be even worth it, will he even consider changes?

Yeah the iron nerf was kind of lame. He should of left surface iron laying around alone, and just made vein iron more rare.

I have, as a woman character no less - carrying kids who wanted to stay back home and raising them.
I found two badlands with ground Iron in them. The first of which had four. The second was quite large and by the time I had a basket full of iron I had found an iron vein and had gone through menopause. The next 15 years of my life was putting down flatrocks to show the way for a young man laying the road before I died to a snake.
I found that the ratio of gold ore to badlands feels like approximately 13:30
Meanwhile the ratio of badlands with some iron to badlands with no iron is 6:30
It's such a weird feeling running for so long and thinking, "Hrm! Another gold vein, fancy that!" Knowing fully well it ain't a priority because you're searching for something rarer.

Using the mod solve this issue. But it's hard without.
Getting 14 iron can be made quickly with a dedicated player with mod, backpack, basket, sharp stone and home marker.
Just do it.

I did. You can pick 7 irons within 20 min.
You need a backpack, a sharp stone, a basket and a home marker + the ohol+ mod.
And avoid animals

Yea lets increase the iron back up. Just trying to teach someone new how to smith is near impossible. When I heard something was going to be decreased I thought it would be the crazy amount of snakes and boars.

The game shouldn't require mods to be playable.
So much this.

it doesn't though. I don't use mods and have obtained similar results, its just a very grindy (and more dangerous) job.
The game is playable and towns can achieve iron age status, it just takes a great amount of grind to get first tools and some luck to find mines.
Tramax, I agree that iron mines shouldn't seem rarer than gold ones. Vein spawn rates didn't need to be nerfed I think.

I just wish the challenge wasn't "uhh just run more and avoid animals more" but actually something interesting like an iron processing system or a mine digging profession. Pressure by cutting numbers that increases walking is just so unenjoyable. I heard about the first ore nerf and that sounded fine - I felt that ground ore was well balanced, not the veins though (spawn rate good but gives too much with too little cost/s; should demand more, or require fixing and upkeeping).
If we had access to horses earlier, I would love to ride around and haul iron but running around on foot for longer is not what I want it to be. Iron runner is now a profession for life unless you are lucky with a vein. And boy, iron runner is gonna be a common thing if this is how it goes on. And I won't be doing it, the entertainment I get is not nearly enough in value to the time it takes.
Anyways, at least we have scrap iron. Doesn't help much in Eve starts or young towns but at least it's still a thing.

I just spent 30 years of my life hauling back six iron for my camp. I didn't see a single vein. The town had pretty much collapsed by the time I returned with a second basket.
This isn't fun anymore.
Edit: It turns out I was in generation 9 and was apparently the first to forge an axe. I'd seen a steel hoe, but that was it. GENERATION NINE and just getting into steel tools.

Smithing is hard, and scouting for resources isn't taught in the tutorial; everything you need there is basically handed to you. And most people never even notice the optional hallway, so they don't know how to smith anyway.

... removed a bunch of wayward naturally-spawning objects (duplicate of flat rock, hot spring, and mosquito swarm). These things were 2x as common as they should be because of this.

Please don't cut the spawn rate for flat rocks in half. Stone roads are one of the best additions to the game.
AND BRING BACK IRON!!!
... and now there's a water shortage too because "Swamp" biome is rarer.
How about adding ponds to the jungle biome as well?

Or instead make a magnet-o-meter, a device that tells the distance to the next iron (or steel tool) Would make scavenging much more real, especially with multiple players who'd like scavenge the same areas over and over...
I don't care if is anachronism or doesn't even work like beyond a few meters in real life...

Perhaps there was a stealth update of veins being upped. Saw a stream where there were 4 veins in the same place today.

Veins are not the problem, imo there could be even less of those. One vein will supply the city for generations, but getting there is the difficult part.
