I was born into a huge town as the last girl. The first thing I did when I was old enough was ring this awesome bell I nearby. I then went onto making a LOT of charcoal because, why not... It will be needed!
When I was about 35 years old some stranger wandered into my town speaking of a great journey towards the sound of... My bell!
I ended up having four boys that doomed my line, but that traveler, she had several girls! I taught my son and the eve how to build bells and they will pass it on. My son and the eve even buried me next to my bell.
So, my point is this. If you don't contribute to a bell in every life you are the reason your work will not live on.
SO BUILD A BELL EVERY LIFE AND RING THEM OFTEN!

Edit: Important note about bells:
You can ring them every 20 minutes. If you try to ring a bell that has just been rung it turns into a stuck bell and you have to wait another 20 minutes. So, no matter what you can ring every bell twice per life!

there used to be a serial killer a while ago who would ring the bell to lure strangers into the village and while they were distracted by the bodies she would slit their throats. you could be next

Whenever I ring the bell, usually someone comes along into the camp and eventually murders me or someone else in the camp. That's the true meta of the bell.

I guess it also cares about whether you care about your family or the town. Your town will eventually get revived, but a bell revives it quicker. But ringing a bell will dilute and kill off your family.

Don't fear the bell for it does not bring death. Death is simply inevitable.

Sadly enough I once travelled to a bell town and really made it, while still having 2 children there, one of them also got it in his mad head, he needs to murder everyone not related ... *sigh*

That's why you need to keep ringing and get a third line there ASAP to balance it out.
Stop fighting the bell meta and just go all out bell and see what happens. It will be fun, I promise.

Doesn't matter how many lineages there are. As soon some people see "unrelated" on someone else in their town their mind seems to make a short circuit and they go on murder rampage.
Or also seen mothers who refused to feed a 'F'-begging child next to them, because it is "unrelated".

Bell towers have their pros and cons
Last girl of a small village hearing bell 6 k away and running to it, only to die in the wilderness...
But it can also make huge cities, the more families in a town the more chances to be born there
Also now that we have cars we can travel even faster which means more years to have babies in the city until too old
If we could have more than one marker at the same time and transport people in vehicles, travelling between towns would be a possibility even without roads
Also a way to share home marker would be nice, for example someone travels from a village to bell town and then can share the location of his village for someone else to be able to travel from the bell town to the small village to bring more people

We should murder anyone trying to kill other lines tbh. This is one of the main reasons we don't have bigger civs and longer lasting cities at the very least.

Yes murder the murderers what a good solution.
Youre fighting fire with fire to just get burned, if you stab them you're asking to get stabbed and then they are asking to get stabbed and so on.
Be nice and be courteous being righteous will not solve problems youre just amplifying the problems being worse than a lineage murderer is hard but thats how you do it.
Disease spreads, and if you continue to show such negative conclusive responses then you show the world that you cant problem solve without killing someone.
This is not the way to follow.
Just a cool dude trying to play some OHOL and have some fun!

That'll only happen if you're helpless as a killer. Just talk to smart people around the town and kill the actual murderer offscreen. It's not hard to get people like this killed because anyone with half a brain will notice their play pattern. People rushing to kill others without communicating is why some actual good players get killed sometimes. Not everyone around you is a peasant, some people are also watchful.
If you think killing griefers isn't an actual deterrent im sorry but you'll probably watch a lot of lines dying.

If there wasn't an unknown in town they would have killed you for stealing a berry. Killers don't need a reason to kill.

Gederian,
I started my own thread on this, but we just revived the awesome jungle berry patch with the mosquito wall/ bell army on the left side.
Almost as soon as we got there, my Eve mom and I RANG THE BELLS. There was drama, but it was absolutely the right choice. Thank you for your encouragement and support.

Killers don't need a reason to kill.
This is very true, not just in experience but as a matter of personality. Almost every chain murderer in real life or in a game will have a reason to give you when they are trying to evade consequences. But the truth is that usually they just enjoy it, even if at some point later they express or even feel regret. Criminals like what they do, and they suppress their conscience deliberately (if they have one) when they see an opportunity to inflate their sense of power and control. And they throw up every kind of smokescreen imaginable when trying to excuse their actions.

Love the story, sounds like a place I have been and bells I have contributed to! Only note: I'ts best to space out ringing the bells so more people will hear them!
Spread the story of the bells to everyone you meet, show them how to make them!

Videos like this one no doubt contribute to that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni_yNrrt4LI
At least he mentions at some point that he almost never kills anyone because of murder spirals getting started. But I'm sure a certain type of person sees videos like this and thinks, "It looks fun to get the game and do this!" What are you gonna do. Most games are versus games or single player massacre sims, so I think to some degree virtual murder is just considered as a valid way to have fun. And is it not? Technically speaking it is allowed, and the game wouldn't be so compelling without some chaos factor. But that doesn't mean it's good for it to be too easy, or to allow it to take over. It's a difficult topic to discuss because games are fun, but a lot of them are like this.
In the end the battle present in real life will always make its way into the virtual spaces that people occupy in one form or another. It's not a "problem" that gets "fixed" typically. It's a struggle that waxes and wanes, but is always ongoing. Chaos and Order are always in conflict, but as long as there is an evolving dialogue between them of a sort, and some form of balance, the enterprise on whole remains alive. When one takes over, it dies.
That's not to say games or real life "need criminals" per se - not in any simplistic sense - but I speculate that there is something we need or could achieve, and until that occurs criminals will appear and serve a kind of purpose for better or worse. I dunno. In any case I don't think there is any kind of Utopia type solution. The solutions are what WE choose to do, and will make things better or worse. It might not even be obvious what the effect is, or things might look worse to us and be better in the long run or vice versa. Sometimes good solutions are available, sometimes not. Sometimes we're just blind to them because the thing we would need to do is painful to even see or consider for whatever reason. Anyway, that's enough from me probably.

Why are people so worried about murder. People will die, bloodlines ended but safety in numbers!
Murder spree start? Ring the bell immediately for help in about 30 minutes. Someone will come and pickup your blood drenched backpack and start over. You will probably be their kid next life.
Once cities are big enough it will be impossible to murder everyone.

Two Big things.
Bells act as guide markers for most people on the server. b/c we don't have maps, A Bell is the only straight lines you get on the server. FYI the lines are N NE-S SW, N NW- S SE, E NW- W SW, W SW- E SE Lines from a single Bell. When the arrow change between 2 direction that change point will stay on the same line all the way out. They are great to use for navigation. So use those bells.
Every town has it murder fest, the Bell has nothing to do with it. So don't be scared of ringing that bell

wel lnot totally true, 1000 tiles away can be north even if its mostly north west, tested on casino city - painter town route, it say north, it was 4k north 1k east, it was mostly 3k until it changed to diagonal
bells can also be found on the main page with contributors, so give the town an identity, make screenshots, we can make temporary maps

Now the big question is, does increasing the amount of bells past a certain point increase the amount of big cities or water them down?
