On the general servers, makign a car is impossible
i just had a life where it was enough resources but too much distractions from the 16 females
i killed 2 bears and we still had 3 or so, i was making water, compost, kindling, melting down 3 pick heads, correcting lot of errors
its just impossible to focus on the engine when people run around
if you don't know: newcomen foundations block the right side tile, so you can make big, enclosed rooms which are permanent and cheap
general walls need to e placed each tile to block the inner side, newcommen, every second tile horizontally, vertically gives a few extra tiles placing it diagonally down left then back down right
general rooms have more free tiles per walls used if its square as sides need walls, square rooms have less sides technically. but the bigger it is, the more cost effective on walls, the amount of walls used is 2x inner height, 2x inner width and 4 corner tiles to completely enclose it
for example 2x10 is 20 free tiles inside, 4x5 is 20 free tiles inside
2x2+2x10+4= 28 walls
4x5 is 2x4+2x5+4= 22 walls
with newcommen, the wider it is, the more effective, height has to be kept minimal to spare on resources
solution: enclosed kiln setup, so only the chosen can enter, no babies disturbing, no garbage on the tiles, only the things you need to use:
stone, hammer, iron, coal, flat rocks, steel and some food
preferably build it on jungle for better heat
cost: 22 stone blocks, 10 round stone for the cistern, 2 graves as one way doors
estimated time to make: 30 min (after pen and mine ofc, you can even attach to an existing pen having a straight corner)
yes has 4 holes in it, no they cannot enter trough it, nor diagonally, that's the main advantage, 1 stone blocks 2 columns of free tiles
i placed the wooden boards to signal the blocked tiles-you don't have to do that just remember it cannot be crossed and its for storage only, you can still put items there but you cannot step on it, and ofc the right side falls outside the setup so that's not an issue, except for the door tile
you can make boxes there for more efficient storage later, its not needed initially, a closed room is good against garbage but always feels small
the graves block people coming from outside, can be replaced with doors later but essentially same function and cheaper
the cistern has 2 purposes: making the entrance on the left side, as newcommen looks weird there and actually you got to make it one tile further left
and you cannot include in the wall or will allow people go in diagonally, you can only place near door or in middle of 2 newcommen foundation walls
also to provide water for the multipurpose newcommen (you can include a pond/well but is more efficient if you got a motorized well later and just a cistern)
the newcommen hammer has to be on right as you cannot reach on left side, and the animation plays on the left of the newcomen anyway, you can use any tile on right except the middle, where your optional exit will be, there will be people who just want to piss you off, so to prevent getting blocked inside, have more entrances and plant it around with bushes so its harder to block the structures
what if you/someone die inside?
there is an option to go inside for kids, south side, and open it up, this is highly experimental and newbies wont figure it out
ofc you can have a locked door too and give key to competent people but as a last resort, is a nifty trick
other precautions:
you need to leave the original kilns for the city with a few iron/steel to have hoes and shovels all the time
this is to prevent messing up stuff, and storing stuff from newbies to not misuse or waste: arrows, knives, ropes, etc.
if you make it bigger, you can have milkweed farm, composting, carrot seeds inside
even tiny sheep pen(it wont block animals diagonally only humans)
and you can help outer city trough the boxes providing ropes, carrot seeds, soil? tools
ironic that when no babies running around, you can make a car but no one will use it, when lot of people around you are annoyed by them all the time
today i had a guy helping on making charcoal, and pipes, but it was just too big chaos to get anything done
i seen a lot of cities with tons of iron but its just a mess and i cant finish an engine in a life
this is the required prepwork, also wont hurt an oven near a few rubber trees to make the tires and belts, can be even included inside
2 veterans have a chance to make it with 1 newer player to organize and help around , like taking parts further, charcoal making, and learning in meantime

you would most likely be able to do it with 4 veterans and 2 newbies in one life, including the prepwork if you already have an advanced civ and all the tools necessary

i cant finish an engine in a life
This is the intention behind this game.

but it was just too big chaos to get anything done
This has been my own experience any time I've tried to do car work on the normal servers. You get people just walking around in the forge or starting to do their own projects while attempting to do any car work.
I definitely feel like it would be possible to make a car or even two in one life but that requires actual teamwork and focus when instead we just have chaos. I think making some sort of workshop area that is not the main forge would do wonders for actual car work since it prevents the random people from coming over to start forging or whatever.
fug it’s Tarr.

I'd go with two newcomen machines to facilitate two players working together. One can run forge and hammer/roller, and the other borer and lathe.
Offline
that 20 seconds is very low, you need 2 people with 2 tongs, and one taking further the ready materials
no its not that much, i could do the whole car alone if there is enough kindling and iron or a cart and i can find some and people dont mess up the setup, i did it a few times so far, the next person had to do like valve and the pipes, cook a belt and cut it, tire station, planted trees and enough buckets make it possible for on single person, 2-3 people could make 2 engines quite fast

we need an assembly line.
The industrial revolution cannot be without productivity explosion by the "pin factory":

Also it's good to make the precision cylinder https://onetech.info/2371-Precision-Cylinder first so you can put the valves in it and they wont get lost or swapped by accident
Offline
I think it's time we got an upgrade for these machines. Kerosene wick burners would make things a little easier and give us more time. It would be even better if we could eventually run them on internal combustion engines.

Can you make more of the foundation blocks cisterns? or maybe have one of the blocking items a newcomen pump well. The car making process is incredibly water and kindle use intensive. Also, I would make the gas and rubber tires first since the process for those are the most annoying.
Offline
well it last 20 sec so 2 can run together
i think i made 5 rods alone as it needs light up all the ingots and put on a free tile once done
now you need 8, and a bucket of water is no joke, and that's the easy part
the bore uses a blade, people steal it cause they don't know any better, then random worms and snares near the forge and the hatchet broken, and 3 hammers are made, and the branches randomly around and the fire too far and they wasting wood, etc etc.
the charcoal making needs to run full time, 1-2 boxes full of charcoal baskets and a full cistern available then is easy to make an engine
heck, even better than a kerozine well

one cistern holds 9, alone you can fire up and and put 4-5 ingots inside if you know what you are doing, put ingots next to kiln, and build hammer 2-3 tiles away max, fire up the kiln, then put in machine
honestly, better get help and do it all together, you got to fire it up twice for the pistons, once for pulleys, once for bore and a few times for lathe
if its not newcomen it has to be straight on that part, as it wont block diagonally in 2 places
yeah ideally you should have a pond in wall, and a rubber tree or two, most annoying part of that is to have one single bucket and wait those half minutes, and do one single rubber at a time
a cart of buckets can make 4, then use the first 2 to upgrade cart, and other 2 for belts
now with 6 buckets in a cart you can make six rubber, get 6 palm kernels and 2 hot springs of 6 sulfur
you can plant milkweed bottom row and use ropes efficiently for buckets and carts, and parts
the multiple cisterns are more of a prep for others as you still need to fill the cisterns anyway, and better to make bare minimum at first, but yeah, any horizontal tile can be a cistern not just a box

Haven't tried anything this complicated, but why don't you just make a station further down the road? Fortress of solitude feels a bit over the top.

try it and you will see
basically if someone born in a shitcamp, wants to make the shitcamp the main city, or keep the old city with the unoptimized farm alive while not liking the new outpost with working setup
if you take iron somewhere, there will be an idiot taking it back and if you say anything than griefs your setup
eventually someone will find your station and stays there raising babies under the kiln and eating your food
11 stones digged and chiseled not that hard
sure just making new kilns in like 30 tiles away might work out
but the plan is to make multiple engines and working outpost than it needs a dedicated standardized room

I think I would eventually rage quit trying to create a car on a uber populated server. Too many noobs and griefers constantly taking your stuff and then if you are successful at making the car, the moment your back is turned, someone steals it and joy rides it into the wilderness and it is never to be seen again. lol
Offline
Wow, using graves as doors like that is really neat.

First effort is a failure?

i didn't focused on it fully
when your life starts with a misplaced pen, no backpack, no clothes, not much food, 11 girls, soil wasted on skewer farm, 3 iron. and twin griefers who want knife to kill people and they act new, but then they mess up the forge picking up steel, tongs, flat rocks.
i made shears, and somehow made pickaxe, we had a nice vein, i made into a mine with like 4 stacks of iron, but i had to make a new forge somewhere, i cut/digged all the things there and took the arrow and a rope. was a lady with cart who died later, she was hauling some stuff
then i gave the arrow and rope to guy to get a sheep finally, he barely could make the first compost
and i made spindle and bucket, cart.
then babysitted and found a smart girl who is on picture, she forged new tools
also someone stole the file
and i fixed the bushes afterwards
so its pretty decent considering the early generation, if someone who knows what it is, and finds it, then can be completed, but was pretty effective keeping out noobs as the left side was quite far from the berry field and other things

Oh! Shoutout to my bones there! I was Batman (Batool), the one who killed one of the twins, got us sheep (finally), killed the damn invading boar, got us wheat and made the first ever compost just before I died. Also made a well at your end of the village.
I was so surprised (but happy) to see nobody curse me after I shot the twin.
I brought my bow, arrow and backpack to your little fortress at the end of my life. Hahh it was such an ugly wall, I thought someone was griefing first, especially after the Ellie incident. But when I saw you make the newcomen base wall I was like "ohh ok there is a reason they are there".
Ugh, darn that famine. I had stuff to do to prevent it but the twins managed to be enough of a distraction that it happened, purging the village quite a bit.
I saw you make shears when you were a kid and I was like "Bubububut pickaxe...!" so I just took off to get more iron. I brought back two and that was when the twins started their deal, cutting the maple and pretending to be new, holding off our smithing. I hid the bow, went out to make an arrow, came back, and shot the twin from afar - glad someone was keeping them still by arguing with them. I thought the other twin would go out to make herself a bow and arrow and kill me but nah, she just threatened me and starved. Thanks for feeding me. And thanks for the rope and arrow so I could get the sheep. Glad the mine gave out so much iron.
Would've been really fun to co-op there to make a car shop and such but yeahh griefers and famine villages are great at pushing away personal projects...
Maybe some other time.

sorry i didn't bury you, we had not a single food, so i went 50 tiles for 2 berries in my pack and one in hand, did this twice working on the bushes
the soil was enough to fix a few bushes
i had a girl but i swooped up this brown chick, cause the emotes, and adopted her, a lady came to give pack to my kid but i told to give the other girl as i knew that emote spamming means zoom mod, she was quite slow at smithing but did the new shovel and blade, hope she got the new file too, she had pies at the start of famine, and was only 14, so plenty of time to get new kids
was quite funny bitch thought she can stop me making the pickaxe, she covered the flat rock but i just hit it until the end and swooped up into the pack, wolfhat guy took the bow so i would have done it myself, but couldn't, so the best thing i could do is to store arrow and rope in pack until the other twin, emerlee dies
im glad i did the shears first, we still had one crucible for pick, and couldn't of done it later from the baby swarm and griefers near old forge
i born in the savanah , so i knew there are some rabbits
but i actually got a few off biome rabbits under the pen, hiding in a basket behind a tree
blonde chick was ''you should wait family'', trying to take my fur, but i don't wait noobs to make their packs and give to dumbest kids

Guh. I just built oil + the car from scratch with the multipurpose engine on a custom server. I have no idea how this would be possible on server 1-3. I think the whole process took 60 iron, 100 buckets of water, 100 charcoal baskets and 8 lives.
I don't know if a car shop would help much since I would doubtless need help doing this in a crappy city, and space helps a lot so you can just plop down a zillion pipes and pistons before lathing it up.

its like 26 iron for the newcommen accesorries, 15 for car, never made pumpjack, its 3 for the athmospheric core, 3 pipe to start it, two canisters, 4 for the converting, so around 10 extra so around 50?
i often seen people grind up until the first few pistons and maybe a box with tires. but that is like 5 people prep work on it, as you need sheep pen, 2 mines, and enough buckets for tires and belt making.
