Nice job on the car!
I was thinking it would be nice to make a railway, since they're so pointless on the main servers. Is there anywhere that one could be useful?

I can't open this server... Has any one run into this problem before?

@antking I just got in, and linode shows there's been traffic lately too. Can you screenshot what your settings are? You can't just click the link in the OP if that's what you're doing haha XD
As for rails, big issue with rails is the iron cost. If we get a stack of 50 so we can play around, which we had before I made oil and the car, sounds like fun!
As for where, I dunno, to be useful it'd have to be super short. Only thing I can think of is transportation to and from the oil rig, which is close but a bit of a walk.
Okay so I've been experimenting with iron runs with the car, and if anyone's interested (and knows enough of the server to be able to find one of the two cars xD) this is the best method I've come up with for mass iron harvesting:
Divide runs into two types: Mining and gathering. On both runs, take a FULL tank of keresone and take it with you.
1) For mining runs, 1 tank of kersone, a mining pick, and two stantion kits
2) For pickup runs, just take 1 tank of keresone and 3 baskets.
And the idea is we do a whole bunch of mining runs before pickups.
This way there's no worry about finding where the mining spot is, since you just don't care: eventually you'll run into a previous mine and pickup.
I also suggest the iron dropoff is not in the capital, as it'll just get used up instantly xD People might see 200 iron and think "wow this iron is limitless!" When it just gets harder to get over time.
Like.. maybe it shouldn't even bo road connected.
Anyways, I didn't lose the second car, I just moved it to the other hiding spot.

is the number the address of the server or the port of the server?

thanks, I had 1H1L about when it came out and it only just hit me to sign into Forums, so I am still little shaky on how things work!

Thoughts on balance:
-Change clothing and temp formulae so it doesn't feel weird
I might occasionally play on this server but I'd totally help. I took some college classes on heat transfer/ modeling, and the code is close but still off from reality.
All depends on what you want it to look/feel like.
I also had a thread about the heat mechanics' oddities here if you wanna rant there.

Ah nice!
Hah, I think we lost both our cars already. Niether in the town, north or south. Luckily we've got plenty of iron, but I'm legit making a locked garage before making another engine xD I think one may have just been in use, though.
Regarding temperature, I read that thread that you just linked, and looks like jason plans on changing it according to a quote. Sooo.. I think I'm just gonna be lazy and see what he does xD

Nah, at least not in the near future. The no-temp-run update happened at the close of that thread, and was almost definitely the big change he'd planned. And while snowballs, and the jungle, and (clothed-killing) fever did break new ground, they're no real overhaul. Maybe we'll get cooling clothing if we're lucky, but they definitely don't fit in as seamlessly with the current mechanics. (cooling us down in the desert would freeze us in other biomes, and a centralizing effect would require some lines of new code)
That said, the mechanics aren't the worst they could be. You have my support if you're looking for change or not.

Yeah, whenever we start a new town, I'm mostly just going to make it so malaria and clothing feel "better". So I'm thinking like an overall nerf to mild temperatures, while also making clothing never increase heat above a certain point. I'm not going to make any code changes during town #2 unless necessray, though, so if the town survives the next update, it'll still stay with the same rules.
Also, I'm going to see if I can recover the cars via riding horse, would help if whoever lost one can tell the general direction it went. My guess is some people ran out of fuel, since it's not immediately obvious you need to keep a spare tank inside, which means they're probably not far off.

I'm planning on building a church of the religion Rohrerianity for fun to the east but not too far. It's just gonna be for cosmetics and is gonna be a relaxation station of sorts with lots of decoration. It should be built of stones but if that is not available I'll use whatever is available for the time being.

[/quote=Greep]Was talking with some others in the server, and a bear in the zoo would be more fun :3 Separate cell of course. Main pen has got cows, sheep, and pigs now. I think geese are the last domestic animals.
well you wanted a bear in the zoo I got you a bear in the zoo!
I put it in the pen today so be carful, and please don't kill it it was painful process getting it in there!

O.o wow I saw it. That's impressive, how did you get it in there without everything escaping?! I think someone else will probably kill it tho when they want to milk cows xD
Though I could always just make a separate pen for cows instead.

Alright, as fun as this is, I think I'm going to shut off the server for a bit, they've moved on to stealing cars and stuff which actually is harmful unlike the apocalypse xD
It's as good a time as any to test how if the database is saving our town correctly.
Edit: Good news: Our town did survive being shut off Bad news, I think the only way to proceed right now is to write up some admin tools or read up on any jason has. Server's off for the moment but everything's there.
I think I've got a fun way of dealing with him, but I'll have to take a while to test it out. Server will probably be back up tomorrow night or earlier.

Lol I can imagine your server somehow being the only one to ever see this new apocalypse. But hey new challenge!
Goodstuff on the saving and good luck with the admin stuff.
Thanks again

Well reading about other servers, they seem to deal with this by making people use a password or something xD I'd hate to gate it like that, but it might need to be the long term solution. Even if I can give myself wizard fu to deal with this one guy I'd have to have people always online to monitor stuff since people can do a lot of damage in dead hours. Tough issue, since this game wasn't really designed with property in mind (yay communism!)
Anyways, too tired to do the whole sebang tonight, but I'm working on it
Okay here's some of my thoughts, would mind some critique before going to bed. I don't want to make a game others aren't interested in, but I think these are reasonable, since most people like this just for the continuity:
1)Other servers I've read up on have essentially unlimited gatherable resources, which lionon also suggested earlier, and I think we will have to go this route: I'm actually not at all interested in "the struggle" of long term resources (it just means longer, boring hauling, how fun) and I don't think many people playing on this server are either. Thus, if a griefer is playing at a time when nobody else is on and hides a bunch of crap, we can just rebuild it pretty quickly.
Mostly I'm just talking about milkweed and iron as the game currently works. As grim and I found out, clay/reed is basically infinite xD If this requires a client download, we'll have to do that as this seems important, hopefully, not though.
2)This might take a while to code, I have no idea yet, but we're going to want permanent identifiers for people and a curse system that makes it easy to eject people for at least a short amount of time (very low curse threshold for a short amount of time). Like, people get their names permanently by saying "I am X" exactly once, and they will sign on as that with no way of removing it. If that's not possible, I'll work more with what I can do.
3)At least until we get some sort of critical mass and more permanent solutions, I'm going to turn the servers off when I know I can't be online for very long stretches of time. We already know the server is saving things when I turn it off now, so it should be safe to do so. Will suck for those people that are only online when I'm offline, but I'd rather not have a griefer screwing things up for 5 straight hours.
4)Murder will remain in the game, and in fact will be made even easier as I have time. This at least will slow a griefer down if there's not enough people online to curse. Because people are essentially "immortal" its mostly just a slowing mechanism, right? Probably going to turn off graves so there isn't a mess if someone is defending the town at an awful time.
But the long story short is that I will end up needing to make a lot of changes, so don't get too emotionally attached with anything, as I might screw things up. Hopefully, we'll be back soon, might be a bit, though

No rush man, I have faith you'll find a way to keep a pretty good balance.
I keep going back to this thought in my head with this new apocalypse and what the whole game really is at this point.
It reminds me of a saying about texas that goes "We don't have laws, just suggestions". While OHOL isn't in a SOLID state of anarchy like maybe the 2b2t server (oldest anarchy minecraft server) it IS kinda a chaotic neutral if you will. There are no rules and everything really is free game. Even that bot CrazyEddie had to deal with seems to be fair play by game rules. I personally love the craziness and just like achieving something in it, even if it does and probably will be destroyed. There are often waves of creation and destruction that keep thing interesting. As long as the effort to destroy isn't crazy easy and OP like the first Apocolypse, I dont mind having to rebuild. If Jason didn't change the eve spawns this apocalypse might have been possible and i can imagine people traveling like 10k tiles to stab an altar bro and little wars breaking out.

I love this server! It's the first time I've ever played on a user made one. I spent a couple lives making compost and santa hats. It's really a shame that someone started griefing, but it was bound to happen at some point. I agree with everything you said.
Offline
Yeah me too xD. This'll probably take a while given the stuff I want to do. Incidentally two hours one life does seem to be an interesting place with continuity as well if you guys want to check it out in the meantime. I haven't tried it myself yet, but looks interesting.
Last bit: I think I am going to require a client download for this when I do get it back online. It's one thing having to do weekly merges when there's one conflict, but I'm not updating once a week and doing a zillion merge conflicts every time with actively running servers. Too much time and instability xD.

Alright, this is what the changes are going to be. Tomorrow I'm going to be busy so might be until friday/saturday till the server gets up and running again. It's a decent amount of changes so I may need to test them out with some guinea pigs
1) Iron will be infinite (collapsed mines regenerate very quickly), milkweed will give thread instead of stalks. Mostly for griefer proofing, but helps with grind a bit
2)You'll need to actually sign on with an email-hash and key. If you don't know what that is, it doesn't affect you, so don't worry about it
3)All players will spawn as eve, they will be automatically be assigned an unchangeable last name based on their unique login which persists throughout all their lives, and when thrown into the world their movement will be initially slowed for a brief period. So if a griefer is identified and caught, they can be chained killed. The slow period will be brief enough to be shorter than a murderer's kill timer, so if there's only two people on one can't chain kill the other unfairly. The slowing part isn't coded yet but looks like it will be easy.
4) Will go through with shutting down the server during dead hours daily.
5) No client download, the list of changes doesn't seem to bad. But it does mean every time we update the game to jason's changes things might be unstable.
Honestly I think this is all that's needed. It won't eliminate griefing but it should contain it enough that I'll be happy keeping the server on for most of the day. Also, now that we're requiring the normal login, I can permaban anyone I catch causing serious trouble >:D
Edit: Hmmmmmm... actually I'm not so sure about this ticketServer thing. I'll have to talk it over on discord. I'm kind of surprised this even would be allowed to work for security reasons and it does anyways. Wouldn't that mean you could trick people into handing over their steam login stuff to your server?
Yeah I don't like that idea, I'm going to scrap it unless I get the okay from someone who's more experienced in this area. Maybe there's a better way of handling this such as making people immortal period and causing lethal weapons to inflict stun instead. It's not like death even means anything on the server anyways. That's probably more work, though. Le sigh.
Edit: After doing some more digging, it looks fine to use the official ticket server, it uses encryption on the client and ticket server end, so it's not like if my linode gets hacked anyone loses anything xD I'll proceed with that plan then, since I'm just using the official client. Huzzah!

3AM PST to whenever I get up to turn it back on xD It'll be a temporary solution.
Right now it's just off while I write up the coding changes. I am getting to it, it's mostly done actually. The best time to bring it back online will be after jasons update tomorrow, since I would otherwise need to take it down again do a merge and put it back up. Better to just put it back up after the merge.

Alright, lock and load, server is up. Things I did do:
-Infinite iron, lots of milkweed
-Login credentials via the official ticket server
-Everyone spawns as eve with an unchangeable name based on their login. I can log both the name and email hash to everyone's actions and ban people that misbehave (although I gotta take down the server and do a bit of digging to actively ban someone)
Stuff I didn't do:
-Slow down people on rebirth: Just decided not to, given my new admin powerz, sounds like it'd be a hassle.
It is still getting shut down during off hours, though. There's already one extremely minor bug I need to fix that I wouldn't have caught in solo testing xD
Edit: Aand shutting down for the night. Hope to see yall back tomorrow morning
