Changing mosquito sprites for zoom visibility

After all the work I did learning how to do custom emotes/adding in the snowball splat for myself I decided "what if I made mosquitoes actually visible." At first I played around with what I could and couldn't replace the games fly image with. Binding of Isaac flies? Yeah those little circular ones worked wonders while generally being visible with various zooms. On the other hand, using a picture of the flying spaghetti monster didn't work so obviously there is some actual limits. So instead of just stealing content from another game I made some nice red blocks.

MTFqdUd.jpg

Much much easier to see against the dark green jungle biome unless red-green colorblind but the blocks can be changed to whatever color I want them to be (or maybe not, still trying to play around with this atm). The only real drawback is that skeletons now produce a flying rectangle along with compost doing the same but visible mosquitoes probably worth some slight downgrades on visuals.

Honestly I keep changing my mind on how to distribute this stuff but right click one of the images below and save it as 307. Convert them into a tga file (some people report you don't have to but I've had most my luck doing this.) Once you have the file saved you can use https://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-tga then proceed to put the new 307.tga file into the sprites folder replacing the old fly sprite. Anyone who wants added to the list of mosquito sprite replacements is welcome to add to the thread.

Those certainly are much nicer than my red blocks tongue Glad to see someone else made something a little better looking.

Stuff like this just makes me appreciate Jason's drawing skills more and more as I attempt to make anything that even resembles a fly.

This one is what I'll stick with. Not too crazy.

I don't have a sharing website to share the tga though.

:'D Just like in real life.
Makes me think of those bad "photoshops" in MS Paint.

Yeah jebus they ended up creepy looking, I tried to mimic the wing shape of a mosquito but those are just way too big. :'D They resemble dragonflies a bit...

And for anyone who wants to sprite swap from flies to red rectangles. I would do something more elegant but drawing is hard and sometimes simple things are the best.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cw6s2wka9gmyimg/307.tga?dl=0 This is the crappy fly model posted further down in the thread. Just download and place into sprite folder, no need to name change.

Pick a link from above and enjoy your new mosquito/fly sprite. If you're feeling creative join the thread and make your own mosquito sprite replacements.

Pretty sure Jason added these to punish people using zoom mod, which makes it hilariously ironic that now people are editing the sprites to make them easier to see LOL no offense Jason

I haven't actively been playing the game since the last update but when I seen someone say something along the lines of "I'd pay to have someone outline the mosquitoes" I thought about one upping it and just trying to replace the sprite. Now instead of tiny black dots I have giant ms paint flies and I couldn't be happier.

So to redo the sprites you need to make sure you have the spriteID for whatever you're replacing - in my case for the mosquitoes I needed the fly sprite which is 307. I converted the tga over to a png file then proceeded to draw my replacement sprite over it then proceeded to covert it back to tga to put back into the folder.  Now once the file is replaced it either would accept my replacement and allow me to load into the map, tell me I had a corrupted file and fail to launch, or just never finish loading. Obviously I'm no wizard at this as I've only been testing something like this for a hour or two at max but it's been a load of fun.

To find the spriteID in the first place I was looking through his live changes related to the update.

That would be funny if someone just replaced the entire swarm with just one giant Moquito so new players would be terrified of going into jungles and die less. Really for me its snakes, they make no animation when they sit still and you can very easily overlook them if your just autopathing to the next biome, damn things give me a heart attack eat time i get bit.

Unfortunately since everything is client side for these changes you would have to give out a bunch of copies of the image/folder/whatever for others to see any of these sorts of changes. I'm not exactly how large we can make the fly in question but it's very possible to remove the excess flies from the animation to create a solo fly.

You can always just make a zip of the sprites folder in question which honestly is a better idea that what I was doing rofl.

Decided to go back and add some colour and transparency. Linked the file in case anyone wants to try it! The problem is they fly like they're drunk and the wing flap on the compost is broken as its in a different place. Also as you can see, they are roughly the size of two eggs! Terrifying.

Re: Changing mosquito sprites for zoom visibility

Nice job on your mosquitoes/flies. If I wasn't using my crappy MS paint ones I would definitely be using your much nicer models. Seems like they would have some pretty good visibility even near or at max zoom which is always great for running through the jungle.

I tried to do it, and now I can't connect to a server all the way. Have I done something wrong?

I went and edited the sprite image in the files without changing the dimensions

Yeah if it's not allowing you to connect you need to swap to a fly that works. It's basically the same as when the file is corrupted and what not except it just fails to connect without actually giving the error message.

I drew them as little hearts! Also I didn't need to convert the tga file into png/jpg. Somehow opening it in paint tool sai worked.
