Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

**I added lots of new info here and there. plz read one more time +my replys too!
***I lost my passion on this after snowman melts, and full clothing give you temperature in the middle.

Everyone'd begin to think it's impossible to close all the door of a room.
If door is open, floor and walls are useless in most cases. (temp is same as outside)
in the end, you only rely on fire radiation.

So why should we bother making all these floors and walls?
when you floor jungle or desert,
it gives out free heat!!!

FdCXpN1.jpg
*smaller room, cooler
*one bear rug affects whole room. warmer in grassland, cooler in jungle
vbZbog8.png

So, just make a huge room in a jungle or desert.
Even if there is one grassland tile,
(temperature will be reversed if you're wearing clothes)
you can come back to jungle tile right away and it won't harm you much.

>> The rate of hunger (naked)(without fire)<<
desert, tundra = 14 sec /5pip
all others        = 24 sec /5pip

floored all others       = 24 sec /5pip
floored desert/jungle = 74 sec /5pip ★  <---- depends on size

You only need one big room (not several 8x8 rooms) for the cooling effect.
No need to make fire!

if you want to make 8x5 rooms, (3 rooms connected)
this is an example of how you can do that with minimum boards/rock/flatrock
...and with no door!! (east is completely opened)

*look at the 2nd picture. ↓this village design works just like that.
FluxBB bbcode test
*there should be no door
because open door makes room as hot as outside
(gradually though.. it's not a heat shock)

if you want, put door where ppl don't go often
FluxBB bbcode test
FluxBB bbcode test
FluxBB bbcode test
crops include corn, bean, squash, cabbage, potato, sapling.
you can farm in jungle since hunger rate is same as swamp/grassland. (never in desert)
but still, you can do better with clothes and fire in swamp/grassland

* more pictures of evidence and experiment are below
regarding airspace and insulation +snowman

i would say that have the door on biome edge to not shock you before entering door, i guess it can work gotta try

I like a room in the desert because I can maintain the temperature without a fire.
But the jungle is scary. I hate mosquitoes...

it's a room
if its facing outward, to edge (so you don't get shock before entering)
the mosquitoes cant enter either

other option is to stick a bush near it and 3 roses or 3 boxes, like a front entrance for a pen

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

There's a town on server12 that lies in the jungle, and the mosquitoes are entombed.  There exist many jungle tiles there.  I ran away from it though after the update, so I'd probably want to get a horsecart up before going back there for any sorts of experiments, and I'm not sure I'm interested to do that anymore.  If anyone else finds my town (it has mosquito tombs, not city walls... plaster walls is Frost's town), and wants to run such experiments, have at it!  It branches down/south through a desert off of the right and up branch of the road, but not as far right and up as Frost's town lies.

spoonwood v201 fixed the jungle, its temp and dessert temp were too high, plus clothes don't overheat you anymore. So it is totally doable. I returned to my town and want to complete it now. I'm gonna floor the jungle and chill in the open.

now I just want beach chairs and pina coladas to be added in the game.

Remember, mosquito(and all animals) moves towards North Wast as time pass!
If it's an old village and is at south of jungle,
all mosquito'd have moved north already!

plus, why would you go through the hassle making grassland room
when room insulation is this small?
ysXhvY0.png
8e0hVFK.png

compared that with tutorial room!
8X2d9ec.jpg
* I stood very long time to make sure temperature is accurate

you got to make room as small as this if you want to make a difference

That's a tendency, not an absolute.  They will move south and east at some point.  I started in a spot at the south east spot of a jungle with my recent run.  I saw a few float closer to that spot.  Yes, you will be safest at the southeastern part of a jungle.  But, they still can come there until they have gotten blocked.  So, though most may have floated north or west, that doesn't mean that all of them have, or that all of them will stay there.  Again, it's a tendency for mosquitoes to move north and west.  They will move basically when they can in accordance with whatever time change allows them to move, so they will float around away from those north and western spots somewhat.

Is farming in the jungle equivalent to farming with clothing in a grassland or swamp?  I doubt it.  I would guess that farming in a grassland or swamp with clothes would still be more advantageous than farming in the jungle.  I don't like this inversion of desireable biomes, and I think that still holds.

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

Wait.. is the grass inside of the room with the jungle square warmer than a similar room with just grass squares?  In other words, if inside of a room, can a jungle (or desert) square make the grass squares warmer with everything floored?

I still don't like having to rebuild a kiln or oven.

The only effect a biome tile has is on its own tile. If you are on a grass tile, there is absolutely no difference between the tile next to you also being grass or instead being desert.

... assuming you're standing still, of course. As soon as you move, the biome of the tile you move to matters a great deal.

But the heat or cold generated by a biome tile has no effect on any other tiles, no matter how close or far, no matter whether enclosed in a building or outside.

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

you have to floor jungle to get cooling effect
you shouldn't farm in the jungle because you can't make farm over tiles

Today's update changed temperature
now, time for 5 pips is (when naked)

desert and tundra = 14 sec
jungle and others = 24 sec

so, farming in jungle = farming in swamp/grassland
*but you can wear clothes and put fire in swamp/grassland

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

I confirmed that room without wall can cool jungle/desert

your airspace is 8x8 slightly south west.
you have to floor 8x8 around you for cooling effect

↑  45 orange tile
↓  56 orange tile
... you wouldn't want a town like this anyway

this's at town in bigserver2, east of forge. town has two bearcaves north https://youtu.be/tBN43eQVWXA

*strangely, desert room = jungle room
*clothing should give more insulation; cooler in jungle
but I can't see a big difference

you can cool down room temperature with snowman!! (works in grassland too)

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

just note that square rooms give more free tiles per resources
this is because a room has length and height, and those are same
also has 4 corners
each side needs a wall, each corner needs 2 walls
so obviously multiple corners not just ugly, is bad cost efficient
center tiles need no walls
so to have more center tiles, you need to make rooms square

8x5 will need (2x8)+(2x5)+4 walls that's 30 walls for 40 free tiles
with 32 walls you can make a 7x7 which is 49 tiles
same resources, same time, more benefit
i guess it makes sense 8x5 with no zoom mod but any decent setup of room or berries looks much better with 1.5 zoom

the biome border is a wall for mosquitoes, so no reason to make a door to jungle, cause you get shocked or you get bit. and no reason to leave extra tiles on the other side as it has no benefit from jungle heat and no benefit to overall heat
just find a spot with a mostly straight biome border with desired size, as long as there are no connected jungle tiles open, no mosquito can go in
make the room face outward, that's it

when making multiple rooms, you save resources by reusing the longest wall.
if it's a square 3x3 and build another 3x3 to it, you save 3 tiles
3x3 is 5x5 with walls, and another 3x3 is 9x5, 9x9 has a 7x7 inside which is quite big, can even fit 2 kilns
and you save 9 walls
that also works with pens, just attach it to the room, maybe use half adobe walls instead of adobe base, full adobe wall when shares walls with buildings, the rest not shared can be bell base

thanks for all the testing, I can see how to build in the heat now. Does it seem that being insulated in a warm tile is better than being insulated on a cold tile, with clothes but without fire? Or do clothes+insulation+cold always beat insulation+hot?

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

I haven't tested it, but based on the code and Jason's intentions, cold+insulation+clothes will always be better than hot+insulation, or hot+insulation+clothes.

Hot+insulation+clothes is now better than hot+insulation, because clothing no longer makes you hotter on hot biomes. It still makes you warmer on cold biomes, and it still provides protection from biome shock, so clothing really is an advantage on all biomes. That's new as of a couple days ago, though. When the temperature update first came out last week, clothing on hot biomes was a liability.

Sigh... all of this talk about buildings and floors.  What will get done for the farmers now that they no longer have good temperature spots?  The game had balance before in that all stations could have equally good temperature spots at camp.  That balance no longer exists.  It should come back, but I am not optimistic.

Clothe them.

Every advanced camp I've played in has had plenty of clothes around. People tend to give them to you as a kid.

We had no reason to use building or clothes before, in a survival/civ simulation game, that is not balanced.

what a perfectly good reason to suggest kerosene heaters to jason

half the techtree being obsolete wasnt balanced, just easy

Re: Jungle Town gives you free heat with no door! ultimate guide + pic

Fragility you seem to have missed the point.  Clothing helps everyone equally.  So, it won't restore the potential balance that could exist between farming, cooking, and smithing in terms of potential temperature.  Also, I find it likely that farmers will have the worst clothing set on average, though maybe not.

Booklat1 wrote:

So, I'm also user Alternative_Summer on reddit.  I didn't suggest kerosene heaters, but I suggested charcoal burning furnances 15 days ago on the suggestions forum: https://www.reddit.com/r/OneLifeSuggest … 4/heaters/  I doubt Jason has much interest in that though, because of the nature of the recent change.  I only suggested that cold spots have better means to improve.  But, Jason decided that natural mid temperature spots should get destroyed.

Also, since this consists of a thread on jungles, coolers other than snowballs would be nice.

I've reread this and it looks better than I thought.  I'm still concerned about the farmers, and I'm not sure that using that many butt logs up that way is worth it, but still this is interesting.  Thanks for your effort Yaira!

That all said, I still would prefer to have the old jungle back.

yes... farming can't get much better. wear good clothing and have fire going around berry farm.

still, I think this is the best town we can have in this system
require less wood

I guess one advantage comes as that you don't need as many clothes theoretically, given that people share them.  Anyone who cooks or smiths or tends to animals won't need clothes, while someone farming can use clothes with this setup.

It's still not clear to me that this would be worth it though.  The mosquitoes would need to get trapped or you need walls to block them off.  And for at least some of that time your temperature is poor.  There's a startup cost to this.  Then again, buildings and floors don't decay like useful shoes and the most insulating clothing.

I thought snowmen melted, but is that just some snowmen?  Which snowmen melt and which don't?  When do they melt?

hunger rate of jungle and grassland are same.

but if there are too many mosquitoes, start your camp next to jungle
and slowly block out mosquitoes.

snowman melts, but snowman foundation is eternal wink

*snowman doesn't cool the area if there's no walls

*clothes don't make you cooler but slow down getting hot
