[suggestion] suggestion on creating offline game one hour one life

well, i just bought this game recently, but my internet connection is very terrible, i never reach adulthood, dan died because of lagg and internet connection. i couldn't even play for about 10 minutes until lagg. so to make me feel like this is worth my money, is it possible to make this game playable online? or is there another suggestion you guys can give to me?

ps: i don't mean this game is bad, because i went through something touching not long ago (someone ask me to keep surviving in that game, and that touched me) but i wish i could play without having lagg and internet problem...

It is possible to run your own server butit involves hosting a linux virtual machine (assuming you are using windows). https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=112

Re: [suggestion] suggestion on creating offline game one hour one life

jason just made some major changes to how the game loads and i'm having some new lags and disconnects that are different than before.

are you sure it is your internet connection and not the game?

There is a /net function that shows you how your connection is doing, if that helps you figure anything out.

It would be nice to be able to easily practice shit offline.

Re: [suggestion] suggestion on creating offline game one hour one life

There is an easier way to host the game locally.   I use windows and I'm not very tech-suave, but I was able to get it to work for me.   Just don't make my mistake of extracting the download into your OHOL steam folder.  Make a new folder for it, so the batch file doesn't have to work so hard to find the file location.

Run a private local server and you can experiment to your heart's content. If you're using Windows, it's easy!

That's all there is to it!

In the settings folder under the server folder, there are a bunch of configuration files that you can edit to control things like whether or not you randomly spawn, whether you always spawn in the same place, where exactly you spawn, etc. By default I believe you will always spawn in the same location, but if not you can edit the value in forceEveLocation.ini . You can also give yourself an extended lifespan by editing lifespanMultiplier.ini and/or epochSeconds.ini which might suit your purposes even better than Eve-chaining.

Thanks to Awbz for building and packaging the server for Windows.

One thing to keep in mind, this might be obvious, but you must start up the local server each time you want to connect to your solo game.  Otherwise, it will return an error because it can't find the local host.    And when the game updates, you'll need to re-download the files to get the latest changes.   Otherwise, you might get an error that says that your client version doesn't match the server version.

When playing by yourself, you will be an Eve.   It is not the same experience as playing multi-player, but if you are experiencing really terrible lag, it is better to have part of the OHOL experience rather than none at all.

Re: [suggestion] suggestion on creating offline game one hour one life

Oh my GOSH i'm going to try this. My internet connection is so shoddy in my house I literally get kicked off like four times a minute. Makes it near impossible to play and I'm super sad about it because I love this game so much. Thanks for the directions.

Okay after having tried it, I seem to get stuck. I downloaded, extracted, ran as administrator, but the game is clipped and I can't see the entire screen. I'm super not tech savvy lol.

The screenshot you posted (but removed?) shows you've successfully started the server on your local machine! You're done! You're ready to play on your server.

To play on your server, do this step:

  • In the game client, connect to 'localhost'

If you ever want to shut down your server, in the command prompt window (the window with the white text on the black background) press ctrl-c. But you can leave it running for as long as you like.

Re: [suggestion] suggestion on creating offline game one hour one life

Oh I didn't realize I had to go back out and click the original game file. I did that, and it opened, yay! Thanks!

But now I have a new problem (I didn't refresh and see you replied - shitty internet lol). The game is clipped, like I can't see the directios in the tutorial, they are off screen. It normally doesn't do this, I've played the original version with no issues.
[edit] WAIT I THINK I GOT IT I had to keep that black window open.

Hahaha, omg thanks for helping an old man figure out how to computer!!!

Sounds like you might need to set your screen resolution to something different in the game's settings menu.

haha yes, that "black window" (the command prompt) is how you start your local server! If you close it, the server goes down as well. This is why you select "localhost" in ohol, instead of connecting to a remote server.

By the way, the actual game is just someone doing what you are doing. Jason pays a company with dedicated hardware to run the servers, and pays for constant internet (ip) addresses so that people can connect to them remotely. If your internet was stable enough you could even have someone join your private server.

Re: [suggestion] suggestion on creating offline game one hour one life

When my WiFi is slow, I activate 4g on my cellphone and create a personal hotspot. So I can connect via pc and use my iPhone internet on PC.
4g is pretty fast and affordable (here in my country 1 dollar, 1gb), with 1gb of 4g, you can play for a week (at least here in Brazil I have to spend my 1gb in one week or it expires) without being disconnected, if 4g is good in your country/city.
