So on one of the servers I play on things have been goofy for a day or so, something about "god mode" planes and cars all over the place. So, at last I got to try them. But... I don't see what the difference is. Help.

Car drives for two minutes at 300% movement speed off of one tank of gas (speed can be further increased by driving on a road) while a plane drives for up to thirty seconds on one tank of gas. The plane however can reach liftoff if driven on an adequately long road (only requires two road pieces). Once you take off you are instantly teleported to the nearest landing strip in the direction you went no matter the distance. However, should you not have a landing strip anywhere the plane will crash in the wilderness landing in an eve spiral location which generally means the plane is completely lost.
Think of cars as horses that require kerosene every two minutes to drive and planes as instant teleports. The car is better for getting around small areas while the plane is best used to collect resources from far away from the city.

What happens to a crashed plane? Is it destroyed or still usable. Could you crash then build an airstrip where you crash to get back?

you cant crash plains. you can only get lost without a landing pad

Crashed is just the term Jason used for planes that get sent to an Eve spawn location. It's 100% still reusable but requires a road to take lift off again. The issue is not a single person who has crashed a plane has ever recovered it and flown back to their original area. Thankfully since his fixes on planes I've yet to have it happen again but we don't know if it's possible to get home since the update.

Well I'd be interested if someone wants to try 'crashing' the plane, then building a road and attempting to fly back to camp.

Well he's removed the homemarker upon landing so unless someone rings a bell you'll have no idea what direction or how far you are from home. Your coordinates also now get reset to 0,0 so you'll have no idea where you are anyways.

The potential for "adventure maps" is fascinating. I wonder if there is a way to set up a custom scenario.

I assumed, maybe falsely, that if you took off to the west you'd crash somewhere to the west.

Nope, it's set to where the next eve spawn would be on the spiral. You can fly east and end up west, fly north end up south. Crashing is a hell of an experience but thankfully we haven't had a reported crash since the fixes with planes though it is still possible to crash.
