As a mathematician this offends me. Writing out every word is just wild.

Well if you say a number you say the number, not the numeral.
Saying "cat" and saying "six" are of similar complexity.
Offline
and how do i say i need thirty six adobe and fourteen limestone?
it's a bit logn to talk numbers like this, coordinates especially

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

"I NEED THIRTY SIX ADOBE"
"AND FOURTEEN LIMESTONE"

A bit long for what? Convenience?
The point stands: to say numbers you say the numbers, that's realistic; people don't talk in numerals.

We can swear up a storm but numbers are forbidden. Math is the ultimate curse.

We dont talk in game, we write each other text. This has nothing to do with realism.
If babies need food in real life do they make an F sound?
How come people only say a few sentences per life?
If i want to "say" something in game it takes me weeks, making numbers forbidden, makes it take even longer.

Probably as troubling as the lack of numbers there is the lack of any operators, lower-case letters, greek letters, etc.

So obviously writing text is an analogue for talking. I assumed that was obvious.
If babies need food in real life do they make an F sound?
But F is an abbreviation. Why don't you just abbreviate numbers if that's what you want? A=1, B=2, ... J=0
"I NEED CF ADOBE AND AD LIMESTONE"
That would be quite fun.

So weeks translates to seconds in game, so that's about right. Unless you meant literal weeks in which case you are engaging in hyperbole.
Overcoming the difficulties of communication in the game is an important part of success. Clearly you feel the game should grant you more latitude, but you wouldn't be playing the same game if it did. Is that good or bad? I like it the way it is. If I was a slower typist I might feel differently, hard to say.

Though I would like some regular ol' numerals for the sake of convenience, and so I can say, "ihav3pie" at age 8, instead of, "I have" "three" "pies! XD" because the ecksdee is completely necessary, I. . . Don't have any arguments in support of the current system! I'm sure there's probably some sort of code-reason as to why, but I'd really like to be able to give people a solid answer when they come at me with a basic question even if I'm a toddler.
"You! Child! How many people are in this village?" asks some random, wandering elderly woman. "Four" responds the village toddler, only to have the elder run off as they continue their response sluggishly because they typically type too fast to realize they only are able to speak four letters at a time, and have to adjust which takes them a small moment of realization, "teen"

There's no code reason for it. I also don't think it would've escaped Jason's notice as an option. I'm guessing Jason has a reason why he wants it this way. For my money I'm still betting on "people don't talk in numerals".

I think you are right about Jason. But it still doesnt make much sense.
If you say the word seven, it will sound the exact same way as 7.
7 == seven. There is no difference when you talk about it.
"7" is a symbol representing a number.
"seven" are several symbols representing the same number.
Or take the letter "I" for example, it means I but only consists of one letter / symbol.
"people don't talk in numerals".
You can not say that when people are talking they are using "seven" instead of "7", it is both the exactly same thing when you talk about it

I doubt cavemen talked about numbers. Earliest sightings of number usages were from almost 4000 years ago or farther back, we never know.
You could though try to say them in short like "thirfour -fifseven" for x: 34 y: -57 for example. Perhaps use roman numbers like XXVI which is 26, XIX is 19 and maybe like seven- XIV for 74. Always remember that high valued need to be drawn first,
X = value of 10
V = value of 5
I = value of 1
IV = value of 5-1
VI = value of 5+1
Though for better understanding I think discord communicating might help, although not everyone is able to have both in process (Me included)

If you ever enter Pea (Helkama turns into random name) family, you need the lottery ticket picked up. My baby names given can be absolutely random.

Caveman number system
A number system discovered by archaeologists in a prehistoric cave indicates that the caveman used a number system that has 5 distinct shapes ∑, ∆,>, ῼ and ↑. Furthermore; it has been determined that the symbols ∑ to ↑ represents the decimal equivalents 0 to 5 respectively.
Centuries ago a caveman returning after a successful hunting expedition records his successful hunt on the cave wall by carving out the numbers ∆↑ represents decimal number 9.

I'm not sure I'm making my point clearly. The fact that they sound the same is the crux of the matter. The difficulty of saying a number of more closely related to how it is spelled in words that it is to how it is spelled in digits. So if the character limit, the growing capacity for communication is to mean anything (and numbers are a relevant part of people's communication, which we shall accept) then allowing people to type the digits kind of undermines that.
You can think that's a good reason or a bad reason. But it is definitely a reason that makes sense.
PeaGirl's idea of using Roman numerals seems good at the scales we're likely to be talking. Longest then up to 100 is LXXXVIII = 88. And it averages less than three characters up to 25. I'm going to do that from now on.

When i read some comments i wonder if some ppl have abused mushrooms from the game.
They seem so far from the OP comment which is to be able to type digits, like all common games provide.

Jason has said, clearly, that he likes the aesthetics of having to "say" words rather than being able to "say" numerals.
It can be annoying, but I agree with him.

Eddie, I was sure I remembered him saying something like that but I was searching around and couldn't fine the source. So I couldn't say so affirmatively. Do you know where it is?

I'm certain I've seen it recently but a couple of quick searches didn't turn it up.

Duh! Roman Numerals! Do they still teach that in schools? I mean I had to learn it but schools these days...

"How many rabbits north?"
"Ef eye vee ee"
All written language is symbols, no matter what symbols we use.

Numbers would allow kids to say more,earlier. You would also see people talking in 1337, probably, or using the numbers to shorten words.
Btw if I see someone saying they got back XIV rabbits I will die laughing...

This is on purpose. It follows the MLA style guidelines:
https://www.mlanet.org/page/mla-style-m … -and-dates
I'm trying to maintain a comic book look-and-feel. That is also why it's forced all caps, and the punctuation symbols are limited. I don't want a lot of L334 speak or ASCII emojis. This isn't a chat room. This is a game where you are playing a real human being, in a cartoon world. Consider this utterance:
BRING BACK 3 TINDER, JUST IN CASE
If I allowed it, people would obviously make use of it all the time, and you can see how that looks pretty terrible, and breaks the immersion. No comic book would ever format such an utterance this way. It would always be:
BRING BACK THREE TINDER, JUST IN CASE
I'd say that "F" for food is pretty realistic.
My oldest kid's first word was "Eeeee!" By which, he meant "Eat!" But he literally said a single-letter sound at first.

I apostrophe m glad he doesn apostrophe t like the aesthetics of having to quotation mark say quotation mark every other written symbol comma too period
That would also be annoying.
I'd rather be able to type numerals within OHOL, just like I can type punctuation within OHOL.
But I still like this game either way.
