i picked carrot seeds & left them next to the carrots
then wanted to plant milkweed & had some of those seeds in backpack
then realised, milkweed seeds were fairly short after just gone, somewhat like wheat despawns
then went to fetch some new seeds from those i left around the milkweed stump, all gone, all the carrot seeds as well
this is a HUGE change in gameplay, which makes it not easier for beginner camps, cause they cannot afford a surplus of bowls
Offline
I mean, I didn't even notice. Personally I'm glad there's a decay timer on them [appears to be 5 minutes, according to onetech]. Finally, no more seed clutter every fucking free tile around the farm!
Also, "early camps can't afford a surplus of bowls" isn't really that true. While yeah, you're not gonna have thousands of bowls, is it really that hard or time consuming to simply fire a few more bowls than you usually do..? Clay's not exactly uncommon in swamps, and more bowls/plates does nothing but help your town later down the road.

Bowls are only rare because they're undervalued, not because they're expensive to produce.

Yes, you can put more seeds in bowls, but I don't think the despawn timers changed at all.

I didn't notice a change was made to seeds decaying either. I like it though, it's consistent with all the seeds now that you should put them in bowls, much more space efficient.
It's only a single extra bowl beginner camps will need if they plant carrots. And they don't have to plant carrots.

Milkweed and wheat used to sit there forever... no longer.

Great change, there is a lot less clutter now that carrot and milkweed seeds despawn also with carrots stacking, bones are still an issue tho but this change makes it decent, if seeds dont decay it will go back to occupying tiles, having at least one bowl for carrot and milkweed seeds is not that hard.
Offline
wheat was decaying
milkweed was forever
milkweed decays now but i think is ok if you plant some (which you should)
or leave one single
and a bowl is not a big cost to keep it from decay
bit bad when getting seed with a basket, and people who don't know how to store it, if you run out of seeds, you need to go very far, just like for sapling cuttings
didn't seen carrot seed decay, that has a cost, that shouldn't decay
1 soil for 7 seeds
now if that decays, it means you can leave 4 carrots out of 5, or plant back 2 and store 5 in bowl
and never ever leave 3-4 rows to seed, i mean all the noobs who complain that they want 4 seed rows, never even pick them anyway
leave 1 seed row and keep picking it, or make 2 and hide one carrot seed bowl a bit further from camp

carrot seeds & milkweed seeds were forever before
wheat seeds despawned quite fast since ever
but i experienced only one time the decay of carrot seeds, so didn't retest
the milkweed seeds vanished from my backpack, so i don't need to retest - they are despawning !
decay of seeds is easily overlooked, cause how many have the time to check ?
but i would greately appreciate it,
if in general, seeds stored in backpacks & baskets, same as in bowls wouldn't decay as long they are in them
& i don't appreciate it that i will be destroying carrot seeds & milkweed seeds
because i am on a rabbit hunt & not carrot seeds hunt !
& on a rope hunt & not on a milkweed seeds hunt !
this will have a major impact on the gameplay
i understand the joy about them despawning in towns, i bemoaned the junk yard often enough,
but in the wild ?

As already stated in the thread milkweed seeds didn't previously despawn before the update (only removal tactic was burning them) and carrot seeds couldn't be removed at all unless you left them in the dirt to despawn by leaving them too long.
Since you've changed carrot seeds to despawn on the ground is there any reason to leave in the bit where if left in the soil for too long they eat the row of dirt? Seems silly for carrots of all things to be the most punishing crop with their seeds despawning from the ground and the seed row deleteing itself if left unpicked long enough. Carrots are in fact the only crop to delete itself given enough time left alone vs every other single crop which is happy to sit around in seed mode.

If everyone else chiming in wasn't enough, I definitely can confirm. I've played on a lowpop server were it's often just me in my location. They do decay. People stealing seeds I don't think likely to happen.
Back to the original post, carrot seeds and milkweed seeds come as a bit better now since they fit in a clay bowl in that you can obtain more seeds at a time from the wild (or I guess at camp) using a clay bowl than using a basket.

Huh? I've never noticed that. I've left 'dry carrot' seeds in low population settlements and seen other low population settlements. I've never know a dry carrot seed row to decay.
Oh wait... you mean that once grown the seeds can decay. Alright, I'm leaving my comment up as is in case anyone else comes as similarly confused.

every OHOL player has to know that :
a seeding row of carrots - decays within 10 minutes
a bunch of straw separated from where wheat is threshed - decays within 4 minutes !!!
a wheat sheaf - doesn't decay !!!
an undisturbed threshed wheat - doesn't decay !!!
a wheat seed - decays within 2 minutes !!!
a gooseberry seed - decays within 1 hour !!!
a gooseberry - decays within 5 minutes !!!
tule stumps after reed is cut & harvested - decay within 1 hour !!!
a reed bundle lying around without tule stamps - decays within 4 minutes !!!
now new
a carrot seed - decays within 5 minutes !!!
a milkweed seed - decays within 5 minutes !!!
- - -
decay = despawn
- - -
along that list i'd say, Jason has based the new milkweed seeds & carrot seeds on the gooseberry & not on the gooseberry seed
though even if based on the gooseberry seed, with carrot seeds & milkweed seeds it's a different mechanic
wild gooseberries are not as seldom as wild carrots & wild milkweed is even more seldom & therefore more precious
additionally, especially one milkweed plant gives not even one thread but half of it, needs at least one bowl of soil to be domesticated & cannot be revived
same as carrots seed & cannot be revived by one additional soil bowl
i find despawning of carrot seeds & especially milkweed seeds very problematic & quite unneccesary
the change introduced now is like one singular carrot would despawn BECAUSE it is lying as a one singular carrot & NOT as a bunch of carrots
this doesn't make any sense
i understand that a gooseberry decays, it's moist
i even understand that a gooseberry decays, it's singled out of a gooseberry prone to decay
but carrots don't decay & milkweed stalks don't decay, so why should their seeds ?

okay i didn't knew the timer on carrot seed
i still think that as long as you "pay for it" it shouldn't decay
milkweed is fine, it could be higher time
but carrot is now a huge soil leak with this change

I've been trying to teach all my kids about decay timers every chance I get. It's hard because there's so many to know. This is a great guide and posting it maybe to guides would be a good idea. Maybe even enhanced with pictures.

Forgive me... I'm actually here to ask if someone has the decay time for tinder / leaves. It's kind of annoying to have to travel to get branches for kindling, then come back to find out that your leaf and tinder has despawned, so you have to travel again to get those.

juniper tinder - despawns in 2 minutes
leaf - despawns in 2 minutes
spent tinder (not made to a fire) - despawns in 2 minutes

looks like i should conjure an extensive despawn guide on steam
it's a tedious work, since people expect it probably to be illustrated as well
& implementation of pictures in steam guides is less than rudimentary
also
first you make kindling
think about the long straight branch as well
then you get tinder & leaf

Not too fond of this, doesn't make sense for seeds to despawn at all, they are able to be conserved for quite a while. So unless a better method to store seeds in bulk (burlap sacks why not) that doesn't take away bows for other things is introduced, I don't see much good use in this. If clutter is the issue, keep replanting and don't harvest seeds.
I find a more sensible seed reduction to have a large cluster of seeds (say 4 seeds+ with a minimum distance from one to another seed 1 tile) attract birds and they gobble them up until a small amount of them remains.
Carrots are still easily manageable on continuous production of 6 carrot rows and 1 seed row by replanting ASAP but not watering until the current stock of carrots is towards the low end.
