All these talks about realism make me wonder - where are the rivers?
Rivers basically allowed humankind to settle and farm, therefor allowing for advancement and growth.
Why don't we have rivers in the game? I imagine they could work like a pond, giving only one bowl of water at a time. To balance the advantage of infinite water bowls, the amount of pond spawns could be reduced (eggs end up cluttering up every town anyway).
Few ancient cities were ever founded around a pond. I know this would be a huge pain in the butt to implement but it would up realism a lot more than making an intricate temperature system even more complex.
It could mostly solve the whole 'biome of the month' issue as well, as settling close to water creates another important variable in deciding where to establish a base, regardless of biome.

Rivers could be cool. There are two main location factors in the success of early settlements: soil deposits and ponds. You need both, close enough together that you can farm enough food to make it to compost and pumps.

I would welcome the addition of rivers. Maybe just a few, to imitate the largest of them. They could serve as barriers to land travel. Either build a bridge to walk across them or some sort of ferry to cross them. Maybe it could also introduce a delta tile that would be suitable for wild & domestic rice growing.
And you could add some tough critters like alligators to keep everyone on their toes.

if rivers were added, they should have channels that connect them to eachother or to a lake. but that sounds like it'd be complicated, so ig settling for rivers with no channels would be good until they can get implemented.

he spent like 3 years making the basic game, he doesnt't want to edit the client, and it's currently not doable without client modification

A few rivers would be awesome. Meandering stretches of water tiles that are like 3-5 tiles wide. Then let us turn a crate into a rowboat! Would be fun to see towns developing along the river and using rowboats to travel between them.
