Idea discussion:Rivers and Mountains but not the way you think

So i was thinking about the shrinking or smaller maps

First of all, i know Jason cant implement flowing water without client changes so no reason to talk about that way.

I generally don't like water in game,s dunno why. Like age of empires. Your fleet is totally useless on ground ofc, and can be walked around it.
But generally im not so keen over water based things, or only if the whole thing is water based. But water had one major effect: towns always builnt near rivers.
Now just for example the Donau, crosses most Europe, and the Capital cities are near it, back in the 90s Romania even planned to conenct the capital with it, they grown much faster with water transport.

Strategical effect was the blocking it provided, was hard to get past a huge river.  Mountains and rivers made the oldest borders between countries.

I also liked stronghold crusader approach of it: you cant cross water, you cant interact with it, it's just there, blocking. If it narrow maybe they can shoot trough it but that's it.

So what if we don't get smaller map, but we born closer and one challenge would be getting out of the area?
You are completely surrounded with mountains and rivers.
You can suicide but you will be born back to area. Each area would be like 1000 x 1000 so possible to go by horse, possible to have some cities nearby not knowing about each other

The main goal would be getting out. The rivers could have bridges made. Not sure how, maybe like bell tower, each few hours extend them.
Tunnels: drill trough the rocks, using a lot of resources.
Planes: fly trough it.

Instead of shrinking map, the weather would worsen, become colder and colder.
We would need other scale of cold, other scale of heating, indoor farming maybe. I say a temp bar ranging from -2 +2 and everything the same at first, but later even in best clothing you would be colder
A glacial age would come, and people would need to manage  their temperature and it would take more and more firewood/charcoal to heat the rooms. Maybe periodical winters, like each hour 15 minutes. Some sort of hot liquids, tea and soup to warm you up and head back to the map and do some work.
First you play normally for a few hours, with nearby eves, then the winter would start, maybe animal attacks. food decay, sickness, other challenges than food.

Maybe each small part would load in separately, for a few players, and if they break out they can create a new  city. We need some sort of pressure to move forward. Once people can get out, a timer starts and the area will be unlivable, so anyone who couldn't get out, would be dead. A mini apocalypse where you need to build up your city against cold, and advance in tech in order to survive.
Sure , an outpost would move near a wall and people would be close to get out, the other cities either cooperate or make their own attempt.
The better families would continue, and only one lineage could survive, the one with most survivors outside.(this part is harder, maybe make others infertile?) That way your family would matter more. The winners of this would get some sort of benefit , maybe an area with new items, new biomes, new recipes.
The people who get out, will born into tier 2 areas.
This would give incentive to eeolve and take it seriously. Food pressure? others farm, you eat. The only pressure is from yourself how much you steal.

I know this requires new content, and tiered maps. Also changes in the temperature system over time, real time, each zone.

Later on we could have players in tier 1 who are new , a better heat overall, so they can learn the ropes and get out of the valley. Then the current would be tier 2, and tier 3 would be some new content area.

+1 for rivers and slowly built bridges, everything else I'm sort of meh about. Instead of a timer before an area becomes a killzone, just let the natural decline of resources push them out

Re: Idea discussion:Rivers and Mountains but not the way you think

Yeah, my son Mez had this idea this morning.... a "valley" where everyone spans, surrounded by mountains with a few passes, and then badlands beyond the mountains.  In his version of the idea, if you managed to cross the desert, you'd be teleported to another server.

The idea of a "fertile crescent" where Eves spawn, and then people migrate away from that, is pretty interesting.

With the current way that wild resources work, though, I can imagine that central area becoming "Eve Hell" pretty quickly, and if the central area is softened, then people wouldn't be motivated to get out.

well natural resources, and temperature, when you are cold in hottest clothes and eat trough the pie supply, the kids have no survival chances, so maybe some sort of circular temperature loss, the iceage would start near the village and you got to move
but also the motivation of better lands outside
