Have a knack for making engines? Do you know the ins and outs of the multipurpose Newcomen and its accessories? Does reaching the technological limits of this game fascinate you? If so, this is just the place for you! Welcome to the Democratic Alliance of Daddy Diesels Younited (DADDY)*
Here, on our part of the forum, us technologically oriented players, whom I call Daddy Diesels can finally unite and prosper as one! We can coordinate our actions to reach the tech limit faster, and Daddies can build upon the work of other Daddies. Let me ask you, have you worked extremely hard in your playthrough working at the forge/Newcomen and have made great progress towards the tech limit, but did not achieve it? Of course, this would be the case many times, as there is only so much you can achieve in one hour. You hope that someone else with your sort of passion and knowledge of end-game tech can pick up where you started, but what really are the chances? Now you don't have to feel this isolation. Here, we can coordinate our movements, inform others of our progress, learn from each other, and ultimately reach that glorious point together.
I am going to make a discord server along with this forum page as the main medium of communication that we will be using. Before you spawn into a life, check the latest activity in the discord server to see what others have accomplished in their lives, and what to look for so that you can continue their work. If you are searching for a specific village referenced by other Daddies, take into account the key defining features of that village referenced and keep /die-ing until a match. However, there is always an option to spawn in blind to a village and access your surroundings.
If you decide to intentionally look for villages with progress or not, you must always consider what situation you are in and what are your goals. I have included rankings/levels that I think we should use to define our jobs based on what level of tech the Daddy is working at in his life.
Level 1: Father Forge: If there is not yet a forge in the village (this would be close to the start of the village), make one. (also if there is a forge in the village but a lack of iron and it looks fairly new with low tech) Delegate to others to get iron ore and start making all the tools for the village. If possible, make the wrought iron parts of an atmospheric core.
Level 2: Nana Newcomen: Make Newcomen Atmospheric Devices or continue construction of them for your village if you see that the village does not have one, it does not look new, and has sufficient iron supply. Since you will need rubber, you could delegate this job to another player (Rubber Runner) or do it yourself, but delegation is key. Make the first Newcomen as a pump, as to help the whole village survive, and make your second the multi-purpose Newcomen near the forge. Hopefully, you will have time to make the roller accessory and pully for bore and lathe.
Level 3: Papa Petroleum: If you see that the multipurpose Newcomen has all of its accessories (specifically the roller and bore), then get to work making two steel pipes and finding oil. Make the Newcomen on the tarry spot and collect the crude oil. Make a fractional distiller as well and start the kerosene production!! Here are some links to help: https://onehouronelife.gamepedia.com/Oil_Rig https://onehouronelife.gamepedia.com/Fr … _Distiller
Level 4: Daddy Diesel!! If you know that your city has an oil rid, enough iron, and a multipurpose Newcomen engine, get to work buddy! Making a Diesel engine can be tough, so here is a link to help you https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=4821 If you complete the engine, you might want to use it as a pump, or you could make a car or plane. However, this will only likely happen if you delegate jobs to others and coordinate things
Level 5: Car King: If you have an engine, why not make a car?
Level 6: Father of Flight: This requires quite a bit more effort than just the engine, and likely require you being dedicated to the loom and others complete the engine if not finished.
Level ?: We will see
When you finish your life, you could post something on this page or the discord server that tells what rank you worked in, what you accomplished, and information for other Daddies so they can find the village you were in.
This Alliance is Democratic, so we will work together as a community to further create norms and guidelines. Please send feedback to me and tell me what you think. Also, try to spread the Allieance to other people.

Also, the full name of the group is technically River's Militia's Democratic Alliance of Daddy Diesels Younited (DADDY). If you want to know why, you can learn more here, but it does not have anything to do with One Hour One Life. It is just something else that I founded if you want to be part of it too: https://sites.google.com/view/riversmilitia/home

Your post inspired me to try to make an oil rig for the first time. I was born into a town with tons of iron and a multipurpose Newcomen with the necessary parts. I searched around and found an oil spot and started figuring out what I needed. Unfortunately, I was too slow, since I didn't really know what I was doing yet. Based on the stuff that was already available, someone else was trying to accomplish the same goal in a previous life. I wasn't able to get very far, but I did build a short road to help someone else find the rig I started and maybe get things a little further along next time.
In my next life, in a less advanced village, I built my first Newcomen pump. Or at least, I made all the parts so they are ready when the deep well eventually runs dry. The pump wasn't too difficult once I knew the steps. And I should be faster to get the pump working next time I have the opportunity to try.

dont forget rubber, i think an upgraded cart is good early on, and making a car can start with making the tires and stuff

Except potato and cabbage. We need to save the iron for other uses.

If you're playing on a low pop server, you don't necessarily need a newcomen charcoal pump. Before deep wells were removable I remember seeing one group have a diesel engine without a newcomen pump of either type and have made a diesel water pump myself with only two shallow wells (no deep wells... only ponds and two shallow wells).
As a tip, I suggest that you put a cistern next to the newcomen multipurpose engine and try to have that thing full before you start processing the steel.
Also, I think that radios come as more complex than diesel engines. That's not to say that anyone should make a radio though.
As for my rank, I've made a car and a plane all on my own (meaning I processed all of the steel and other resources into the parts and put everything together). Then I made another car with a friend one life after my car disappeared from my settlement.

i made 5 cars, one was just a bit of assembly
few times got pretty close
the best setups i seen so far:
M shape 5 kilns
OXOXO
XOXOX
i guess 3 spaced out works as well, but if you make charcoal for water, this is faster
the newcommen on right side, 2 tile away from the kiln
generally people do 1 tile, but for a car you need empty space to dump those pistons, so the time you win for not moving from the kiln, you lose it by covering up those tiles
also never ever make a car with the original kiln!
make 2 new kilns anywhere with free space, it saves so much time and annoyance
possibly gather iron somewhere else when you go for further mines, a few irons are enough for tools, also people wont make duplicates
i generally put a cistern above the newcommen but kinda anywhere is good, 1 space distance not a bad idea tho

Hmm, is there actually a discord server linked in here anywhere? I'm not seeing it. Seems like we might be better off just using a channel on the OHOL discord server.
I just axe chopped a path to a close by tarry spot from the sheep pen of the Cane family. There's another one southeast, but this spot has the benefit of being in a cardinal direction from what is currently the eastern edge of town.

Sorry for not giving updates on this regularly, but I'm so glad there is so much interest! I hope you all are subscribed to this topic because I'm going to start doing polling; this is a Democratic alliance anyways. So the first issue: should we be capitalist of communist? Meaning, should we just forget any possession of materials and fencing around anything as Daddy Diesels (what we have basically been doing), or should we be capitalist and fence in important things for us like the forges, oil rigs, parts of engines, etc?
I personally vote for capitalism. If we can fence in an area specifically designed for engine building and other facilities of Daddy Diesels, we can prevent people wandering in, taking things, and just being an overall annoyance. We can pass on ownership to other daddy diesels and have a colony of the Democratic Alliance of Daddy Diesels Younited.
Capitalism does have its drawbacks, of course. Building properties could be viewed as an unnecessary distraction from the main goal, and there may not be an adequate person to transition ownership to.
So let the discussion and democracy begin! Tell me and all your fellow Daddy Diesels what you think about this conundrum. Also, if anyone knows if we can somehow get a poll on this forum, please let me know!

I had a "daddy diesel" try to make a fence around the forge area... don't do that.

Yeah, that's a rookie mistake. Everyone knows you build the fence outside of town. It is easy to make a new furnace inside and bring over the iron once it is properly secured.

i made maps and oil rigs and rubber and horse carts several times last weeks
never been able to see a completed plane, seen two cars i think, even tried one out , never been able to fly

Hold up. If Pein one of the most competent (and arrogant) players I know hasn't been able to fly a plane that means basically no one is using them. We gotta change that. I was thinking I lacked skill because I've never done anything with planes. What would need to change to make them less rare?

I'm thinking that lineages would need to stop dying so much, so there's a chance that two cities could exist at the same time and both have landing strips and the necessary tech to build planes.

well based on my arrorgant analyses people don't do prep work
prepwork 1: don't do secodn kil nnear the eve kiln, move it out into a huge flat land, possibly near trees, or plant trees for branches
prepwork 2: make rubber early, one upgraded cart is nice, worst case scenario reviving city will have a good cart, but generally taking 150% resoruces worth a lot
when i did rubber all my life, the first one went into newcommen core, next 2 went into upped cart, now you can go for 3 sulfur and 3 palm same time or 3 rubber and 3 sulfur, any combo works better than taking 3/4 of a cart cause no reason to not empty a sulfur if you start it
prepwork 3: pick all branches, gather, chop, run charcoal all the time, that can be full time job for generations
get stones, make cistern near the designated main well, and near the newcommen, even near the soil pits if many (5+)
get some limestone
all the time i failed is because:
im woman
too much clutter
too much time to get buckets and branches
too much time wasted people disturbing me
honestly i could do a engine in like 20 min if all ready for it
but don't do engien, do the oil part, do the rubber part first

Got born into the Pu family earlier today. I used one the original two kilns to roll out rods (and the same engine to make steel pipes and a pump valve jacket), make pipes and a pump valve jacket. We didn't have a pump, so I got that up (with some help), and got a complete oil rig and fractional distiller up. We had good engine placement when I was born. The key hold backs comes as good engine placement and finding the tarry spot (other than the rng of drilling for oil). Clutter can get moved. Berries underneath the engine would be a disaster. There were some car parts laying around and someone else completed an engine and made the unpowered crude car. I also spent some time that life destroying some idiot's property fence around the carrot, wheat, and stew crop farm. He chased me for a bit, and I did water berry bushes at some point. I do think that the original kilns CAN work if the engine placement is alright. Sure, it could be a problem with more people around, but it's not always.

As you've said before, and I completely agree, rubber should get done before the iron parts. And yes, do oil first. Both come as common mistakes. The iron parts are useless without the oil and rubber. While oil and rubber have other uses without the iron based parts (e. g. a kerosone newcomen pump can run on oil if you don't get out a diesel engine, but a diesel engine is useless without oil, and rubber carts can work without iron, but a crude piston without a rubber seal is just another crude piston and you only need one for the hammer).

There seemed to be planes and cars galore before the temperature update.
Life is harder now...
For projects like this, I guess there are things the town needs to provide the DADDYs as well. Like a surplus of food? A way to secure the lineage so the DADDY can be reborn to the town perhaps?
(I'm just guessing, I've never built advanced stuff myself.)
My feeling (based on very limited knowledge) is that if we could have an additional way to make backpacks, perhaps from cow hide, then more rabbit fur would go towards clothing in larger cities, people would be warmer, use less food, and we could more easily get the infrastructure going to care for the DADDYs properly.

Oh that sucks.
Although I remember from before the temperature update, when there were cars and planes around, they weren't for everyone. Often people would be killed if they used them, because it was seen as theft. I don't remember them actually being used for anything useful, they were mostly for show it seemed.
It's easier to spot when someone uses a horse cart to bring valuable resources back to town.

They're for tutorial towns + tutorial raids. People are stabbed over them because people who don't know how to use a plane will treat it as a toy and lose it forever.
Source: Lost probably 20 planes due to people taking them for a test drive without taking gas.
I myself don't make planes anymore mostly because they get stolen and using a fence for it would be about as dumb as leaving it in the wide open for anyone to get at.

Huh, I don't really know the details of the temperature change. That was during my extended hiatus. Nothing seems much different though, except you can't exploit temperature perfect tiles anymore. You also can't sit on a large slow fire and sit there for 20 minutes before needing to eat lol.
I usually don't make cars because there's usually not enough iron (or not enough to make one with enough left over for city tools). And when there is, it's either people complaining about me using the iron and trying to stop me, 14 other people crowding the forge attempting (and mostly failing) to do it themselves, or I'm being nagged for a diesel water pump or various other tools. Usually too annoying to even bother with.
Believe you're right, but don't believe you can't be wrong.

Would it be possible, if there were enough planes, that having a landing strip would be a guarantee that a plane would show up eventually?
So you might not get your specific plane back, but a plane would always return.
Especially if only advanced towns could build the landing strips. Maybe a requirement could be to put some oil/diesel into the bowl of plaster to get the landing strip. Maybe that would help?

There were towns that flourished and had huge storage spaces filled with pies and goodies, all while almost everyone ran around in the nude, as far as I remember.
I like that there is a lot more focus on clothes now. But even so, clothes seem scarce. Clothes do decay, which I don't mind, but I think clothing could do with a little tweaking. But - that's really not the topic of this thread
