Tl;dr - Track Kits should be changed so that making one allows you to produce 6 tracks (instead of 1) for making railways. The current iteration saw brief activity connecting sheep pens to bakeries, but that's died down in the latest towns. Their resource-per-tile cost is ridiculously high and impossible to justify the pricing with the importance of steel for other tools and machinery.
No one's made any comments over there, so let's see if anyone wants to make comments on it here? Is 6 the right number? Higher, lower?

Well they were mostly a fad that Killian was doing not that they have ever been meta or much more of a toy for bored people to make. As stated cost is one of the reasons they're generally seen as useless and secondly the fact they can't turn.
It just doesn't make sense for a town to need to be designed around a railway system especially with how late into the game they generally exist. This leads to another problem where you are expecting players to understand how to effectively use the rails. As we see with buildings, or even fences most players just don't think before propping something up.
Unless rails get a major rehaul I don't think they'll ever really be useful.

The problem with the rail is it doesn't hold more than a cart and is worse than a rubber tire cart. So, why use it at all? Now if they held 8 items...that could be tempting.
Also I think you need to be able to call the cart to either end of the rail... what is the point of walking just to push something back? Make it like an elevator but for meat and baskets of compost and buckets of water and charcoal for the oil rig.
And yes, why not make tracks cheaper?

Also if they moved alot faster and if they were rideable.
What if we had a crude train that could have a couple carriages attached to it.

they are high cost, and if the cart breaks down you lose it, which is even worse, you lose a steel forever if you want to move it
more length and storage maybe would make it a bit more viable
