How to make the most of a life. Roleplay

Often I find myself born into towns who work in silence and don't say much apart from "We need this".

Feels a lot like grinding to me. We should try break this habit.

Sometime ago I began to set myself role play challenges, Some of my most memorable experiences in OHOL has been playing out these roles.

Here are some of my examples.

- Business Mogul
making a store outside town to sell pottery for pies and sell rope for clay.
(I was able to hire someone to collect clay for me and by the end of my life I had three baskets of pies which i earned.)

- No Charity
(Do not accept any clothes you did not earn, Do jobs for elders to earn a piece of clothing)

- Cultured man
(In cities with multiple active towns, create a culture for your town. Sandals, Fruit Boots, Straw Hats. or perhaps a customary greeting or rite of passage for young men)

- Master and Apprentice
(find an elder who is specialising in one job and ask to be their apprentice, work hard to help them achieve their goals)

Feel free to reply with any role play challenges you have tried and enjoyed.

No.  The genetic score comes as pretty clear in that roleplaying isn't a good idea, because it's not going to help newer players to live to 60.  Especially that 'no charity' nonsense.

People hate to have fun in this game

Anyway I think this is a wonderful idea, I especially have always wanted to try out a little business enterprise like that

I’ve literally done this a potter and had a kid add to the large collection of crocks, bowls and plates I made. I do wish roleplay wasn’t so inefficient though, as you need to stop working or work a lot slower to do it... the people who mass produce like one thing for a village are the ones who make it so successful. I think a lot of players do feel uncomfortable with roleplay too.

Re: How to make the most of a life. Roleplay

I generally disprove of RP but I like the master and apprentice one. I have taken up the habit of introducing babies (especially boys) to the other men on the tribe as their apprentice.

I think this helps avoid the issue of having a role going unfilled

This would be more relevant is genetic score mattered even in the slightest. A high score will make old age easier. But most of us have gotten used to playing OHOL the way that it always was and a low score doesn't make the game any harder than what we're used to.

Roleplaying is a great way to create something deeper and more beautiful than the spreadsheet that is score counting.

Re: How to make the most of a life. Roleplay

I love playing roles and getting emersed in them to the point where some actuins feel just too natural.

I and my hubby and adoptive son made a dance cult after getting married. Aparently our son then tried to bring the dance to the younger generations. (At one point we had the screen covered lenghtwise and slightly up down in dancers!) Early life was really generic, lots of working on jobs and then BAM. Entertainment heaven.
http://oi66.tinypic.com/v6u174.jpg

Sometimes the role is lite like a lowkey dotting mother. Other times you'll take a bigger break to rp things out.
Seriously in a village you don't need 7 cooks in the kitchen when one is efficient enough to feed an entire village if they keep bringing him wheat and meat. More do fine too if say... they take regular breaks from the game and as tehnology levels will increse, I bet mass producing food will get easier.

As much as people hate on roleplaying, you can do the same tasks over and over and over again every life like some kinda robot, interacting with people around you, now that is something worth returning to ohol, that is the infinite source of varied experiences.

Re: How to make the most of a life. Roleplay

i roleplay the mass murderer of greedy fuckers (and people who tolerate them in their town) , that lures 7 bears to a greedy town full of property fences and selfish thiefes, while jason tortures me with being born 4 times in a row into a greedy griefer city, so its cleansing time, luring 3 to 5 bears at once, and either trying to steal the too few arrows and too many bows they have, or just shooting one arrow in each of 4 bear further away from their base:

Bears kill half of them, 3 times lured a group of three bears to resach their base, 7 bears total surrounded their base, where in their farm and property fences (some bears lured multiple times in multiple lifes).
The greedy base that lacked bear hunters and arrows was a zoo full of bears. (i first lure bears, then i take arrows, thers no bear warnings, and if they make 4 arrows, the luring stops, they prove skill to deal with bears and its no longer city kill time)
inside and outside of their property fences, bears everywhere
they failed to hide inside of anything.
they ate ALL the berries of their greedy farms, ending with the awesome choice to starve, or to run out of their thief bases, to let bears into the thief bases to eat their starving babies.

i enjoyed their screams "bears in the farm" "bears east" "watch out for bears south" "three bears west" "shitttttttt" "bears everywhere" "youre safe inside (these fenches) here" (no youre not) "bear inside there (property fenced area)"  "lol, this is a zoo now"
They only had one skilled player, who managed to get three arrows, and shot three of seven bears, before i reduced their arrow count to two.
but thast was too little too late. and they sure failed to see me take away their arroes all the time, while luring more bears.

The remaining dumb warrior tribe died by mosquitoes 100 tiles north of their abandoned incompetent town, shouting "to war", but mosquitos and greed sure got the best of them.
i kinda wondered if anyone of them made it wanywhere, but alas, i never got reborn into that tribe, so its presumed dead. (confirmed by family tree linked below, they only lived for 3 more generations of warbabies and death cults with more knifes than brains, but there is still a DIFFERENT "ziv" family somewhere, not to confuse with this now deat ziv-impostors.)
if you find a ruin with property fence northwest, 7 bears around, just go north a bit for a lot of loot in the jungle.

I was never hunted, i was never cursed, they never knew who i am. because smart people are not greedy fuckers, they where jut too dumb to live long, too dumb to hund bears, but greedy enough to steal stuff into  priivate properties.

the last three of my 4 lifes there were
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4907395 (at one moment lured fife bears at once, but 2 of them went astray) "five bears fine"
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4907424 (just spectating bear mayhem) (made most screenshots)
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4907395 (whitnessing a suicidal warpath, that ends im two mass killings, a doomed baby boom in the jungle and many mosquito deaths.

and what do you know, i never killed anyone with a weapon, but that family tree is full of murderers.
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4907395
killed many, and she died by one of my bears. she had it coming.

looks like i did not finish of the ziv idiots. that goes thanks to
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4907395
who killed her mother, and four of her siblings and one of her babies at age 0. well, thats what i call great grief, that i wanted to prevent with bears.

---

the ziv name rebooted with a ziv-eve with me playing as
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4909625
that eve found ruins for a quick stasrt into mass murders to happen. but i miswsed out on them for most of my life there.
By gen 5 it was a very nice town with very high cake variety and a fuckton of rabits snaresa and carts nearby.
The area was very clear of bears, one bear griefer was a complete joke, bear died fast, and i killed 5 bears at old age, and saw 5 more empty caves, ten total (someone hunted them long ago, seems they learned a lesson).
The stabbing suring my life there only started when i was 58 years old, when my bear hunt ended, i could say "yay murder" and shot an arrow into a murderer, and get murdered, two for one once again, at old age i could not care less, an idiot wasted his young life, stabbing an old women. i already knew that ziv-players fail to even try to curse.
they never leant to not make excess knifes, or to just murder the traitors that make excess knifes.

later the family tree shows me, that rebooting ziv-eve killed her grandson at age two. he lkely had it coming?
the murder thiefes learn slowly.

I like to RP in forums too. Preferably seeking for extra attention, with seemingly important posts, maybe even a little content here and there, just to bait some replies. I even managed to get Jason to direclty answer to me once and Tarr twice!!! I am such a wonderful roleplayer.

Re: How to make the most of a life. Roleplay

I’m just here think out loud about OHOL and roleplaying;

it’s odd, in a way, the game automates roleplay by simply assigning relations and names on the players. Yet, people can push it to a full-on roleplay of a character, who likes and dislikes their own things and can do good or bad decisions while being detached from the person behind it. Then the character is in the focus and makes its own story, and the player basically narrates it and nudges it into entertaining directions.
I rarely see people talk about themselves as irl people, or greeting others as themselves. Only once I talked about my irl life with my in-game son, as our town was doomed (last girl died).
We just tend to accept our in-game names and genders and respond to them, and call brothers brothers, and mothers mothers.

It’s kinda funny to see irl men get flustered when a male character is being gay towards them, yet often irl women find it sweet to gay around. I find it hard to play along when it’s a character of my irl gender being gay towards me, has other straights had that?

I don’t like roleplay or playing pretend, but in OHOL I do it in mild doses and enjoy a brief love story, which is basically few sweet words and special treatment of a certain player. Few extra actions like notes and burial.
I do entertain myself occasionally with a story in my head, even write down some as real full-on stories. Sometimes they write themselves, such as one story of a boy who grew in cold and separation, developed behavioral issues and lack of trust due to his environments, and found false security in drugs and isolation. Got deep in human behavior and trauma with that one, just because one different life inspired me.

What a subtle way of demanding roleplay from a player. big_smile
It does feel odd to talk about real life things in-game, though. I guess I expect a level of escapism and that snaps me right back out of my game-mood.
One of the many reasons why I hate racists, trolls and griefers.

The funny thing is, I think he really got into it after that. Afterwards he said we should pray to Jason to save the town and I said "I don't believe in Jason. I believe in science." So he ran through the town preaching the gospel of Jason. I told him that if he wanted Jason to hear his prayers, he had to pray in the Temple of the Forum. lol

I once told of my experiences in ohol to other people, they thought they'd make great stories, or sound like an episode snatched off  the game of thrones.

Yep, I have a tendency to get really excited when talking about something I enjoyed, so when I told my colleagues about some of my most distinctive lives, they were so amazed. "What was that game's name??", they got so interested. It sounded awesome to them. "Like what, you got born to some random player as their baby, then someone tried to kidnap you when you were a baby, so they could drop you into a forest to die as your town was in a famine, and then you almost starved when you got lost in the wilderness, and then you almost stepped on a rattlesnake, and then you found someone's remains, and it turned out to be your own mother, and then you found your way home and had to kill a person to protect the last living girl in the village?!". It does sound awesome to someone who doesn't know the game and its flaws. big_smile I can imagine what they are imagining. The OHOL stories do get really good, they even impress me if I dare to make some fun connections in my head to wrap it into a nice novel.
Sometimes I play a little animated scene in my head of my recent OHOL experience, if a fitting song starts playing. It has almost gotten to a point where I'd make the animation myself, but, I'm not quite passionate enough about it yet for it to be worth all that effort... Only when the power of the experience gets over a certain bar, will my artsy soul demand it comes into existence.

And no, I had no remembrance of the word forum and its meaning.
