peace works when you are really good at:
- spending the first 5 years hiding their arrows, bows, knifes and file. you must disharm both parties for a peaceful chance. you likely get reborn there, and can unhide the things. hiding foreigners items is easy on a horse.
- evading anyone with a weapon (this counters the above a bit), just ride away from them. they chose how much time they waste chasing you instead of protecting the campfire, youre on a horse, so much faster, can easily flank them while the archer is too far. dont just engage a fight against a family of 20 on your own, thats a waste of everyones time. a family of 10, a single person has a chance to kill everyone, itf thats what you want to spend 20 minutes of guerilli warfare with.
- using hammers on knifes to make shears out of them. having a bow or knife or sword as foreigner sure doesnt look peaceful. all the weapons you ever had are to be hidden.
- wasting their time and saving you some time by freeing all their horses (without being seen much doing that). no big harm done, it increases your survival chances (easier to escape by horse while not being chased by horse), and its a non-hostile greeting, just like the whole "disharming by hiding weapons" thing.
- making paper somewhere in the outskirts. this is often not simple to do, gathering its tools, fire, and its takes time, but its possible within 20 minuites.
- meetings of two eves bot around age 30 haopen (rare, but fun)
- gifting a town that is 90% farmers without weapons a bell https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=7211 an d then just be a hunter gatherer to foreigners, instead of scaring them with your presence, or appealing to their greed with your stuff.
a clear peace gesture is just gifting your shoes to foreigners, you wont need them while you are mostly on horses. but you will need your other clothing items still age 55.
the clearest gesture of peace is when a mother carries their baby to you, away from the campfire, so it can listen to whatever you want to say. this is a risky move by a mother.

I wouldn't hate swords so much if they were like any other weapon in the game. But nooo, they just have to be the "ez genocide tool" granted by Jason...
My first sword death happened just recently, as Veronica Good. There I was, snaring rabbits, enjoying life, when a raid-- no, genocide party from Thunder family ran in and started stabbing. They weren't even on my tile or next to me for the hit to connect. Got stabbed twice as I tried to dodge; there is NO dodge. I managed to warn others before the two stabs cut my 14 year old life short. Out of four sisters, three of us died to their swords. My mom's last words break my heart, "I sorry daughters". I wanted to live there, I wanted to give my mom a good Fitness score, and have a relaxing life of simple things. I want no participation in this random genocide, to humor THEM. I wanted to humor myself, and ending up being a tool in their fun makes me seethe.
Then, I got born to Thunder family - the same family where the genocide party was from. As expected, I was surrounded by normal nice players. The genocide party was there somewhere, stabbing my old family. I raised my children, farmed tons of milkweed and started a great fence pen. And, of course, cursed one of the genocide party people whose name I remembered. But what use was that, there were six of them, (some carrying food, some carrying med tools in a cart) and my Good family can't even curse their killers, and the killers of their daughters.
I was glad to see Good family survive, though. I don't know what went down, but that genocide party made me so disappointed. It's just random genocide, "for fun". Some get their kicks from shift clicking a person without a weapon. A person who cannot dodge. An outnumbered teenager trapping rabbits alone. That's so cowardly.
Now, as Graceann Radish, my last daughter, Mega Radish, was born, wanting war. I told her war sucks in OHOL (not even war, just genocide with people calling it war for roleplay), shift clicking and sword juggle makes it stupid and easy. I told her we have no swords, it was an Eve camp. "It's okay", she said, and I left her, hoping she could still starve alone. But she survived, and went to recruit people to go with her.
Made me smile wide when I saw she got killed by mosquitos.

Hey now, don't be so sad! Jason """fixed""" the combat system! While dancing was a little dumb at times at least there was some skill involved with it. Counter play? Not in my ohol! Peaceful ways of disarming people? That's not allowed anymore! :^) Also why weren't you carrying a bow and arrow while catching rabbits huh huh huh? You were clearly asking to be stabbed by trying to catch rabbits out there.
Auto-aim was a dumb thing to add.
Removing the only way to disarm was dumb.
Auto stab was an okay for stabbing in melee range but auto shooting when in someones threat range is pretty dumb.
Basically anything related to combat changes (besides the early balancing) has been done terribly.
fug it’s Tarr.

While I can agree with the disarming and ranged points that you made, I support the changes with melee. Its now pretty damn hard to single handedly go take out the moms in the nursery (the heart of the town). The thing that did shift was power in numbers meaning a lot more. There's always going to be more good guys, and with the med apron it strengthens this concept.
That's why the bear attacks have dramatically increased (as you've seen). They're frustrated they are losing the upper hand and are resorting to artificial power leveraging to combat it.
You have examples of organized raiding with the sword, because again a power in numbers thing. While having somewhat organized raiding was possible back before swords, as demonstrated in one of my threads about apocalypse town, it was pretty impractical.

You stated that you miss the families never fighting with eachother, but I think it was a design flaw. There should be conflicts with other groups you don't trust. While right now we might be at the other end of the spectrum, where conflict is just statistically unavoidable, I dont think we're going to be there forever. I think we'll see something added that will push us somewhere towards the middle.

I'm flying high. But the worst is never first, and there's a person that'll set you straight. Cancelling the force within my brain. For flying high. The simulator has been disengaged.

I get the auto-aim thing, although it sucks I can't dodge, but auto-aim paired with juggle sword paired with not being able to curse foreigners is just griefers' playground delivered on a silver plate. They can go nuts with no consequences, while others try to have nice calm lives and actually craft and build things. And I did like that snowballs would disarm people, as kids could defend themselves. Realistically so, imagine getting an icy snowball launched into your eye or something.
Just had a starter camp (Emberson) get destroyed by some wandering genocide party and swords. Basically the tiny town had gotten to the point where we had one knife and shears done. I went to check out a big belltower city further North (Tree and Smith family corpses laying around), then some lone guy there, Turki Shin, tries to instantly kill me with a sword. I ride around, looking at the place, rode back to home, and see the starter town murdered by Shins.
My earlier family (I was gen 2) of Radish died to swords by the Tree family, at gen 5.
Frigging yay, I'm off to Overwatch.

I don't really have an issue with melee weapons having the auto stab thing as it sort of makes sense and combats dancing. That part of the change is fine in my opinion but range absolutely should not have an auto kill function. Can you imagine what happens next time he adds a butter knife effect? Better yet, until he makes another RANGED butter knife. You won't even be able to dodge that bastard and it's not a thing of if he'll do it Jason will 100% release another butter knife effect weapon we just have to wait until the next weapon gets added. I'd be a lot less annoyed with swords if he made them easier to recycle but he "conveniently" forgot to add steel rods to the recycle list so it's still a hassle to go around getting rid of them.
I am fine with bear attacks because I just trap them. Obviously I should trap them away from towns but I think they make a nice little decoration within a town but that's a thought for another thread. While obviously there should be some sort of conflict at times going from one end of the spectrum (You should never kill outsiders) to the complete opposite (you should always kill outsiders) completely changed the dynamic of the game. Now we've got roaming shitters that go from town to town slaughtering people regardless of reason just to destroy others work which then proceeds to basically reset the whole area due to the quick reset time.
I'd personally rather be far away from people again than deal with all the mindless violence shenanigans. I'm sure we'll get to a point of being able to interact with others without stabbing each other 24/7 but like everything else Jason doesn't work in moderation only in extremes.

Auto-aim is only a problem with ranged weapons (the whole reason snowballs got gutted in the first place.) Jason stated he wanted to get around to giving us better ways to deal with griefers but it's clear that's far back on the back burner at this point. The biggest problem is that clearing out Eve camps is probably a "legit" thing to do so you don't have others with sword around you. The game brought everyone together for people to basically just kill off the people around them to spread ourselves back out. Not sure what the point of bringing people together is if you're going to make others better off dead (and far away from you.) I get not everyone likes to do the same thing but hot damn conflict for the sake of conflict is just frustrating. Of course people could make fences but Jason purposely leaves them shitty then wonders why people won't build them around their towns.

Oof. Yeah.
My browser deleted my carefully construct message so I'm just gonna summarize it;
- at this point I wish I could spawn so far away from people that no outsider could make it to my town - this way I only have to deal with occasional griefers inside my family, where I can curse them and have equal fights with equal weaponry
- sadly I have no idea how close people are to me when I am born, so even if I do run to some direction to start anew, I cannot tell if there is a city in a walkable distance anyways
- I just wish swords would behave like any weapon in the game, being deadly to anything you point it at - as long as they don't hurt your family even if you try to, they are considered magical to me
- I wish I could curse any killer, because it is most likely from another family
- I wish there was a way to stun or disarm people peacefully, something even children could use, so it wouldn't be so one-sided when a fight ensues
- I wish there was a way to recycle swords
- I wish there was a sheath for swords as they are annoying on the backpack
- property gates and fences are basically just momentary spots to stand around in, they won't save you; you're just trapped there
- that said, people seem to hate property fences and attack places because they exist in the area - as they cause hoarding and cause annoying blockages
- I wish that outsiders wouldn't always be a threat; any lineage can get griefers, swords just make it easier for them to go and mindlessly attack some family, as they get extra killing power with a sword there (and no curses for their actions)
- killing with swords causes mindless conflict, which usually ends in everybody dying in the end, so nobody usually benefits from it
- war sword did not make our family more important, it just made foreigners impossible to have around (because griefers can be born on any side, and they don't care who they get to kill, as long as they get to kill, especially with extra powers granted by some specialized weapon; so war swords they are, with the whole 'being safe from curses' bonus...)
That's all for now folks.
