I'm flying high. But the worst is never first, and there's a person that'll set you straight. Cancelling the force within my brain. For flying high. The simulator has been disengaged.

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

Hmm... food for thought. Do people think it would be useful to have an idea of how much time a player has invested in the game? Or would it just lead to elitism and player abandonment?

I don't need to know if you are a vetran. I can work that out by judging your actions in game. You might be a very experienced player in hours played, but also a complete idiot with a lot to learn yet.
But if the game let me know that you had less than twenty hours invested in OHOL (300 is too high), I would do what I could to help you to navigate the complex systems and stay alive. Sometimes, new players make themselves obvious through their actions, but other times, they hide in plain sight until they die surrounded by stew and milk.
I see no advantage to tracking or revealing hours played beyond "raw beginner". It will just lead to vetran-only villages and general dickery. There will be some of that bad spirit directed at noob babies, but those people are clearly garbage parents who deserve extra stabs if they are caught in the act.

OH MY GOODNESS! Thank you all!
Today, when I was watching at the booth, so many mothers were SO HELPFUL to the PAX players. One mother toward the end was an absolute gem, continuing to help the player throughout life, and he eventually died of old age (after lovingly burying his mother and aunt with indigo flowers).
Yeah, I can't believe this game existed for 18 months without a "new player" notice given to a mother.
Part of it was that there was no quick way to implement it, but now with the server messaging system, it's a one-liner.
I think in the past, I was stuck thinking about the new player baby being marked in some way, and I didn't want to break immersion like that. But if just the mother finds out (through a message), that's much less obtrusive.
There's still the little wrinkle of how the server finds out how much experience a player has. The review server (where stats are tracked) is separate and would need a remote call to fetch that info. Not totally trivial, but doable.
And I think it will make the game something like 100% better for new players.

Yeah, I realized yesterday morning (before reading the forum) I'd been forgetting to ask for new players Saturday, and there might have been more with PAX.
I know some people have talked about lying for fear of being abandoned. I try to use "Let me know if you are new" so it's less of a demand.
Perhaps a client option, people can already lie either way.

I think it would be nice to know if your kid was a new player (if they bought the game that day) because sometimes stuff happens and you can't always ask, would be helpful to us and the new guys! Easier to teach if we know when they need it

Some people buy the game, then don't actually try playing it until weeks or months later. Other people try the game one time, then don't come back to playing for weeks or months later.
I think total in-game time alive would be the best metric to track "newness", rather than date of purchase or number of lives lived (new players die frequently and live a lot of short lives). If you have lived 20 hours in-game, then you have had a decent amount of time in the game to figure out how the systems work. You might not be an expert, but you probably aren't making common noob mistakes any longer. Less then 20 hours or less than 10 hours, something like that. Then you are giving focused parental attention to the players who could most benefit from the guidance.
Some players will undoubtedly be terrible mothers, even to a new player, or maybe even ESPECIALLY to a new player. But I believe the majority of players will take the opportunity to teach and help a new player learn the ropes.
...
And keep in mind that if you care about genetic fitness, you are already trying to keep your babies alive. This change would help people to keep a high genetic fitness, because they will be warned that their baby will need extra care to survive childhood. An experienced player can be thrown into the badlands naked at three years old and manage to survive off wild berries and zoom mod. But a new player can starve out while fully clothed in an established town, surrounded by yum foods. This would not only be a great feature for the new players, but also for the more capable players who enjoy passing on what they've learned to the next generation of players.
