Because that is the vibe I'm getting, it's kind of eerie actually, the forum here is even vaguely reminiscent of the Bay12 Forums, by a show of hands who else here is a DF player?

I've seen a couple people say something along these lines. I was a big DF player for a while and still keep my eye on the updates. Even made a usable .ttf of the game at one point. There's certainly the vibe. Not the depth yet, but that's no doubt going to come after two years of development.
I think all the diagrams about tile development helps give it the DF vibe as well. Most efficient layouts etc.

I am a DF player, although it has been more than a year since I last played. I think it really has to do with the positivety of the community, for sure. The game is hard enough that people are put into a situation where they have to cooperate in-game and, for that, on here.

I have 501 posts on the Bay12 forums, played two succession games, and joined the Bay12 Lands of Lords alliance and the Bay12 Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup clan.
I expect a Bay12 OneHourOneLife server once there is a Windows server branch.
Oh yeah - and I have 130 Dwarf Fortress videos on youtube. I agree with izak about OneHourOneLife having the same vibe as Dwarf Fortress.

Played DF long ago, for a long time. Now you making this thread kinda makes me want to return.

You sound like a recovering addict. Be careful!
I like to go by "Eve Scripps" and name my kids after medications

Well, I'm also a recovering DF addict, i don't play the game anymore, but i need to watch Kruggsmash's videos once in a while. I remember my first automated elf breeding-sacrification chamber, then my blood powered lazer. I also remember my first coinstar room, and I learned there that pets can die there, rip my dwarfs' 47 pets, never forgetti. And the wooden speared dwarf babies, and the drowned dwarfs in my """swimming""" chamber, because i was too lazy to use minecarts. Oh, and the mermaid pool in my forgotten beast soap throne room. DF is a truly unique game.

one question from a non DF player
was DF also plagued with griefing incl murder ? & if so, what were the solutions ?

Really? You know nothing about DF, and yet, you reply to a DF thread.
To answer your question, yes, the biggest griefer was the player and RNGesus.

Lol. DFs most prominent features are the griefing and murder. You just happen to make a new fort near a crocodile infested river?
Your dwarves will kill themselves trying to fist fight it.You don't have the seashell your miner needs for his Strange Mood?
He'll go berserk and takeout half your fort. And if you are a decent player that manages to avoid any major catastrophes.
You'll probably end up trying to destroy your fort and kill all your dwarves in the most spectacular way possible out of boredom.
There were never any solutions. It's the funnest part of the game.
That being said, as far as griefing goes OHOL is hurt a lot more by it than DF ever was because of how much playing the game relies on playing and cooperating with other people. But it does make for some interesting stories.

Handling a griefer or murderer in OHOL is easier than handling one in DF, I find, for how players in OHOL have have a mind of their own and have the opportunity to strike back, whereas Dwarves in fortress mode get shocked and panic, which causes them to run across rooms like headless chickens into a downward spiral.

Used to play DF but only a bit. Never got involved in any DF community though.
But yeah - the feeling of being overwhelmed right from the start and the need to spend few hours reading wiki before your first actuall game where you do anything usefull is kind of similar...

Once we have the "littlest bush digger" we will be the same.
Also, "what happened in your last life" including some accounts from the griefers . I do vendettas in game, and murder people who call me dumb etc.
