Ladies and Gentlemen, People of OHOL, Young and Elders. Another Arc has ended, lasting roughly 1700 years. What a Century! In the beginning, the Keldermans started off as the strongest family, counting almost 12 females. But, according to some recourses, the lack of fertility in a generation caused the downfall of that family. The last remaining Keldermans opened their gates to the Morsell family, who quickly settled in. After the disappearance of Keldermans, a family called Nim grew stronger and stronger. But at the last moment of the Eve Window, Eve Hammer managed to slip in and organize a strong and growing family. For some years, the Hammers dominated the Arc. Some rumors say that slavery was being introduced in that family, which could be the cause of the abruptly ending of the Hammers in Generation 36. Morsell and Nim were now the only surviving families, racing each other to be the last surviving dynasty. During that time, we have seen Kings and Queens come and go but peace always remained between those clans. It seems like this Arc could have lasted for a while. Gardens were built, constructions of belltowers were started and a bird was singing. Unfortunately, a civil war in the Morsell family broke out at Generation 57 and was the cause of its downfall, leaving the Nim family as the last survivor at Generation 76 ! It was indeed a very eventful Arc! Which Family will become the dominant one in this next dynasty and will lay the first berry farm for a greater future? It has been a great century and we wish you all the best of luck. Your reporters @Tea and @Emma

Ladies and Gentlemen, People of OHOL, Young and Elders. Another Arc has ended, lasting roughly 1800 years. What an exciting century! We’ve seen families come and go, towns thrive and forgotten. Even a cult clan, known as the Puig Family, worshipping a murderous individual going by the name of Ziv, was being formed in the early years of the Arc. It seemed as they were living in peace with the Keldermans and Hammers together until one of the Puig Woman doomed the Hammers Line and was brought to justice by the knife of a Kelderman. The Ziv Cult ended shortly after, at Generation 9.
Many households found an early end but the two strongest family lines were those of the Morse and Hamelin.
Luck was not smiling upon the Hamelin Family though. They had to face a serious and never before seen case of Griefing, the outrageous act of throwing tools, iron and even PIES over the Rift, never to be retreated again. After the person causing these criminal acts was dealt with, citizens of Hamelin could breathe again, hoping to live a peaceful life at the edge of the north-eastern rift. And that was the last time that they were ever seen again in this town. Years later, people of the Morse household had taken over their city. Rumors were going around that they had slaughtered the Hamelins and that only a few surviving members of that family fled towards the western rift.
The Morse were a peaceful, quiet and hardworking town. They had a well-organized city, with plenty of yum food available. They had a healthy number of females and strong men working in the fields and in the smith to keep the town going. It seemed as they were going to be the family that would be able to see the end of the Arc. But their luck ran out, some say because of the Hamelin Massacre, and towards the end of the Arc, they only counted two fertile females. While the Hamelin were thriving in their new town, near the western rift, counting at least 23 females.
And in the end, it was the Hamelins that successfully survived the harsh conditions of this world and lived until the end of the Arc Century! Another Arc has started and the Eve Window is now open again. Which family will rise and dominate this Arc?
Happy Eveing Everyone !

We have a website on Github, were we store all our past and future articles for people to read (Thanks to PXshadow!). There are some pictures as well, so we will always have a little memory of all those towns that were build. We will post every article that we write on Github to the main OHOL discord channel, so people can go there and read it.
The Arc Century News (ACN) That's the site where we will store all of our articles. It still needs some cleaning up and we still have to post all of our past articles ^^ I'll let you know when it's up to date. (And yes, the new over-the-rift-throwing griefing will be documented there as well)

Ladies and Gentlemen, People of OHOL, Young and Elders, another Arc has ended, this time lasting only 817 years! What was the cause of this short Arc Period?
It seemed as if the remaining Hamelin members, who survived the Apocalypse, gathered all their strengths and willpower to become yet again the strongest family of this Arc. No other family could keep up with their speed and so were crushed by their infinite power.
Unfortunately, no pictures could have been taken of this Arc, since our departure couldn't finish a new camera in time before the apocalypse happened, announcing the end of another century.
The Hamelin Clan has now become the winner of two Arc Centuries and is known as the strongest family! Can someone challenge them and push them off their new throne? Will this Arc last longer or will we see the end sooner than expected? We wish everyone good luck!

The most recent arc only lasted 517 years, which is something like 36 minutes after the Eve window closed. Yikes.
I'm eager to hear the story about what happened.

Aha, here's the reason:
L4 | Thu Sep 19 10:21:40 2019 (413 ms) | general | Local apocalypse triggered: Too many babies per mother inside barrier
Offline
Too many babies trigger apocalypse?
Wasn't that part of an old end condition?
Offline
Well, it's still in there, just in case.
Otherwise, there's pure chaos.
Do you remember when 20 bb were chasing the last mother around?
That can still happen when we have two surviving families. It ruins the game for as long as those families continue surviving.
The goal here is to have no prolonged unplayable state in the game.
Offline
I see so it's just unfortunate circumstences or maybe caused by something.
But if the babies survive is that really an issue if there is too many babies per mother?
The issue is if they keep dying and respawning.
Maybe having an additionnal check to see if they survive and dont continuously die and respawn could be interesting.
Offline
If the BB survive?
Well, I guess it could be "#bb per non-bb player" instead of per mother, right? We're assuming that they could survive because other players help out.
If the world is swamped with BB, then we're in trouble, and the game has become unplayable.
Probably if > 50% of the world is made of helpless BB?

You can see we get down to 1 mom and 5 bb. But there are still 24 non-bb players in the rift.

yes if the babies survive, get fed and make it to childhood, then having too many babies per mother is not an issue since they wont respawn since they didnt die.
maybe first when too many babies get born it triggers a timer, if babies die too many times during that period the apocalypse triggers, if they survive then it doesn't
Offline
Considering I've managed to successfully raise ten babies past the toddler stage in a dead village over-run with bears, I think five babies per mother is very reasonable.

I like adding this condition after the "low number of families" is triggered.
It makes more sense than the current single condition since we want to pin down high rift mortality, specially from starvation and murders ~ signs of a dying rift.
This way we have longer, less exploitable apocalypse triggers and get a feeling of world ending whenever the first condition goes off.

Exactly.
Right now, a small number of players can force the arc to end well before we reach a general consensus that the Rift is approaching an unplayable state. I also see many people who are just plain mad that there are only two families to play. The Rift as a whole is doing just fine, but they want to force the reset in order to re-open the Eve window for more family variety. If there was some way to add more families later in the arc - like maybe the Eve window reopens for an hour every 1000 years or something, that would be really nice.

I was playing when the Apocalypse triggered. We had just finished building a diesel engine for our water supply. We had a town with plenty of resources and a lot of food and we were far from struggling. It shouldn't have ended just because there was only one mother in the world - if the arc went on for just a minute or two longer the number of mothers probably would have gone up.
I don't know how often the server checks for TooManyBBs end condition, but maybe it should only trigger the Apocalypse if the condition is triggered X times in a row?
Counting players instead of mothers also makes sense - mothers are not the only ones who take care of kids.

Yes, will fix it to count non-bb players instead. In this case we had:
1568888500.41 nid:2074723 fam:4 mom:1 bb:5 plr:30 eve:1 rft:29 avAge:19.83
5 bb out of 29 rift players. That means pop was 17% bb.
What should the threshold be? 25% bb? 33% bb? 50% bb?
I just want to prevent the insane, broken herd of bb that makes players say, "This is pointless" and quit playing for a while.

Isn't it possible to count the ammount of babies dying (from different players not one person continuously using /die) in a certain time frame.
If too many different players die as baby in a time window the arc resets.
That time window is trigerred when we reach the too many babies condition.
So having too many babies wouldn't necessarly and immediatly reset the arc

Yes, I agree that a new Eve window every so often would be nice.
However, we're then stuck, again, on what the end condition should be.
Maybe it remains the same (ever down to 1 family), but keeping the repeating Eve window in mind. Let's say there's an Eve window every 5 hours (so it's out of phase with the 24-hour cycle, and thus hits everyone's schedule eventually).
Then the game becomes: keep at least 2 fams alive for 5 hours, with new fams injected ever 5 hours.
I worry that it would go on too long....
I suppose I could also have a hard limit on time mixed in. So that it never goes longer than 4 days, no matter what.... But I worry that it would run 4 days every time.
The good thing about the current fail condition is that it seems to be variable and reliable. It always ends after some short number of days, yet it's hard to predict, and it's fully under player control. All of this makes it both a viable end condition and an interesting one.

Eve tokens?
If families drop under 3 or 2 a new Eve is born to start a new family but this burns a token.
No more tokens arc ends.
1 token is added every 500 years?
So there is a possibility to "win" if families do very well and survive long enough for tokens to be added but if the rift becomes unlivable families would die out and the tokens would rapidly be used up.

Leave the end condition the same. It is fine as it is.
Every thousand years would put a new window every 17 hours, roughly. Many recent arcs have died out at the 800 to 1200 range, so that suggests it is enough time for things to get dicey. If the 1000 year Eve window is brief (30 min to 2 hours), then we only have a short amount of time to "stock up" on new families before the next dead zone. And each 1000 year span will get progressively harder. We won't be able to keep the plates spinning forever, but we might have an arc last long enough to justify large scale projects and cool buildings or gardens.

But if you have an Eve window that's not at the beginning of the Arc, then they're not real Eves. They don't spawn in the wilderness and start a civilization from scratch, they will move into an existing city, either a currently existing one or one that died out. That feels very wrong to me - Eves should mean a start of a new civilization.
