I hope swearing in this thread is ok. Because holy FUCK have I been trying to do this forever.
I've finally landed in the low 50s, and have happened to hit #1 after hovering in the top 40 for a while.
Reaching a fitness in the 30s and 40s is fairly easy, but climbing into the 50s can be a real FUCKING grind.
For all of you longing for better fitness whilst wondering generally what strategies to employ, search no further. Skip to the dashed line to skip the fitness explanation that follows.
Here's how fitness seems to work to me: Every life you live, along with the lives of your children & grand kids (if you are a woman) or nieces / nephews / greats (if you are a man), contributes a weighted number of points to your fitness, seemingly capping your total fitness at 60. Your fitness is maintained across lives based on your account. If you live a long life with low fitness, your score for that specific life will be higher than someone who lived for the same amount of time but had a higher fitness to begin with. All point additions and subtractions follow this weighting method regardless of the separation between you and the fitness-relative.
Lives can also remove points from your fitness by an inverse effect - dying young with a high fitness can knock you down by upwards of 5 points from my experience, where similar deaths hurt your fitness less if it is already bad.
By the time you are in the fitness-50s, full-hour lives will contribute less than one point while /dies will subtract around 5.
These two facts combined make it significantly more difficult to climb due to the nature of the game mechanics and community - but more specifically the norms relating to death that are established as a result of the mechanics and community.
Your kid /dies when you're in the mid 40s fitness score wise? Good luck making up for that 4 point loss you just instantly gained. Get ignored as a baby? kiss 3 points or more goodbye. Get stabbed by a griefer or in a raid? Sorry, you'll probably have to take a loss unless you're already old. Have just a few of these tragedies occur, and you can be staring at a huge net loss in a life.
At the same time, securing a fitness of 30 or above is almost effortless. So if you're new, just play! your fitness will increase! Then, once you're in the 30s or 40s, you will notice a distinct barrier caused by the reasons explained before, and more. Read on for how I used strategy to improve the odds of a net gain each life.
-----------------------------------------------------------
----Best Case Lives
The best life to have when climbing from the 40s to the 50s is a male life with no sisters. This means that you do not need to take ANY fitness losses due to the poor play of others. Only your life will contribute to your fitness which is exceptionally easier to control than the lives of others. The down-side is the pace by which you will increase your fitness without gains from fitness-relatives. Still, the consistency you can have with these types of lives should not be ignored.
Life as a man with one sister or life as a woman is rather comparable in difficulty. No problem in city and town environments, as safety and abundance is common.
----Worst Case Lives
Critically dangerous lives you can have when climbing from the 40s to the 50s are eve or low-gen lives. If you are an eve, I suggest you just kill yourself as soon as you can if your intention is to climb. ONLY if you are an eve will your fitness score be unchanged by your own life. Bite the bullet and quit that one while you can net-0, before the /dies murder your fitness.
Low gen women will not have it as easy as an eve, as they will lose fitness by dying. Especially if you are a girl, consider cutting your losses if you have doubts about the survivability of a low-gen village or eve camp. -4 or -5 is better than multiple -4, -3, or -2 scores from /dies or poor conditions. They add up fast. I know this is not great for the game ecosystem, but it is optimal from a risk management perspective in certain conditions.
The MOST dangerous life is a life as a man with multiple sisters. You will end up being responsible for more children than any woman can in the game from a fitness-relative perspective. As women can only be responsible for one woman worth of children and grandchildren, uncles can end up being responsible for two, three, or more women worth of children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, this is a difficult problem to deal with in game, and is often the cause of large losses.
----Misc Advice
Do not twin or triplet when trying to climb. The community will sometimes murder you for suspicion of grief, as twins tend to have a higher rate of griefing than single children do. Twins are also less likely to survive due to feeding difficulties even in times of relative abundance.
Do your best to engage with your fitness-relatives socially, gather them supplies while they are a baby if you can, and display work ethic to establish a friendly atmosphere that increases the likelihood that your relatives will be invested in this life, increasing the likelihood that they will:
A. Not /die
B. Live until 60 rather than starving out on purpose in their 50s.
A lot is really left to luck, and you never know what you're going to be logging into. As a result, it's important to capitalize on the lucky lives you find yourself born in. If you are in a fenced town with lots of food, take that opportunity to be a really supportive and active mom or uncle. Encourage your fitness-relatves to live carefully.
This takes some work, but I found that the most important factor in attaining the #1 position was engaging with my fitness-relatives socially AND mechanically (by mechanically I mean by means of progressing tech & production). Knowledge of recipes will only get you so far from my personal experience. Maximizing gains is important when the losses you take during your fitness 40s and above will be substantially higher than the gains per fitness-relative.
Create social debt within your fitness-relatives. Do small favors like giving gear, food, clothes, or help to your family. Teach noob members of your fitness relatives basic skills. Roleplay as a loving family member. Act like you care. Because you do. You care about your fitness.
Avoid fighting and keep a weapon on you. Know the signs of griefing and prevent it. Do not stab without asking questions, and do not become a vigilante - people might take you and your close relatives for the bad-guys. Try to report crimes to as many people as you can before taking action yourself - or get someone else to do the stabbing.
Be cautious of mixed-family towns. Even if there is peace, racism is a very common RP feature in the player base. Particularly if the two families are different skins, murder-crime potential is heightened. This is both the problem and solution. The life that finally put me into the #1 position required a genocide to secure, as tensions between two families in the town I was in had dire implications for my fitness. I had to kill several innocents, but my family started a fight that was going to be reciprocated with opponent force, and I couldn't risk my children dying in the fray. I was not happy to do it, but the losses would have kept me out of the 50s for sure.
Lastly, if fitness is want you want, don't do a raid or encourage raiding to your fitness relatives. The gear is good but the risk can be high. Leave that to the others.
Good luck!
EDIT: I clarified some ambiguous statements.

What is an ominous blade blank?
It's that blade blank next to the file and short staff you see in a naked toddler's basket.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but /die babies don't affect your score.
I've been in the top 10 a couple of times, and #1 once. Your general tips are all good advice, especially being an active, engaged, and generous mother or uncle. Talk to your babies, give them some of your gear, try to help them feel connected to your family's story. My biggest gains happen when I get a couple of daughters who are really invested in the family. Ask to name your grandbabies. Give them "gramma's shoe" or whatever and tell them to pass it down to their daughter.
I also only play about *maybe* 4 lives a week. Far, far less often than most. If I recently had a successful life that puts me in the mid-high 40s, my next life later that week might be all it takes to take me to the low-50s. YMMV.

Yeah, /die babies don't affect your score, as a mother.
But the do affect the score of the person doing the /die

Regarding the man with no sisters life being optimal, that has recently been changed somewhat (not live yet). Your younger sibs will also count toward your score.
So the only truly solo-score life is a man with no younger sibs. That's pretty rare.

Most retarded thing in the scoring system is that if you are actually a high skill level player who starts societys makes em roll and prosper you get a big hit to your score cause ppl cant survive eve camps.
Getting good score means that you dont do anything yourself, you rely on others to kickstart your civ. Then you born into a ready made world and just live of from others doings.
Havent cared for the score at all cause for me it just reflects the people who wil suicide your eve camp and eat your pie pile.
