LEADING THE DOVERS - Posse issues, a griefer, and mild success.

Hello,

I was Nero Dover,

http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=6207153

I led the dovers from about the age of 15.

The Lady in charge, my grandmother I'm pretty sure, was asking for a baker.

I figured I could offer my assistance and leverage my help for succession, as she was quite old.

I was right - so I am a young Baron, soon turned Lord.

I do very little for most of my life - in terms of what one may do as a leader.

I basically just had a fancy pin and baked, chortled, etc...

We had some active boars nearby, so the towns first death under my rule was probably around my mid to late 20s, maybe early thirties.

It was very foolish, as the bakery and smith were all one building, and that building also contained the meds, the victim ran around in confusion, making the medic get lost and ultimately fail to completely heal him.

This led to the first instance of my intervention - it was requested that I take action.

I ordered 'protocol' for being injured as - running to the meds and standing still.

I then ordered all aprons to be handed in and dyed to become medical. I don't think we had more than two, and one was mine from baking.

This led to one or two more injuries being handled with more efficiency, and the town lives. At this point, there may be around 20 adults in the town.

Because the new follow system is relatively static in terms of hierarchy, it was very easy for the town to have an information delivery system that moved laterally across everyone - since this organization had been around for at least two previous generations, almost everyone in the town was part of it, and I was the only one with leadership.

Then came Dorla Dover.

http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=6207153

She was vilified very quickly, and I think that perhaps the situation was escalated too quickly - still, I think the town was justified in its action - it was essentially a unanimous agreement.

Dorla was my niece, so I was not thrilled to be causing so much drama (I am a fitness nut), but Dorla began dirtying our pads/

Remember, that our culture was heavily centered on medicine, and injuries were common.

This got three people very upset, as Dorla /devious and drops our pads on the ground.

She gets cursed by a couple people, and she begins chopping all our firewood. So I see this and leader mode kicks in, despite her being in my direct line.

I curse her, and i put out an order to curse her, citing that she ruins meds. Everyone runs over and starts cursing her. She starts ruining shit.

Then I take out my knife and declare 'I will kill dorla dover,' and place an order for it.

Now everyone starts taking notice, and the entire city comes, at that point, she abruptly stops, as she realizes that  there are like 25 people, all in one faction, all being ordered to curse her.

Then she started asking for her mother.

So here's the problem I found. Our faction was very big, and we all were trying to kill her, but even with a ton of people, it was not working.

Someone came up to me and said that I needed to exile her - I had forgotten about this mechanic, but I said the thing and she got the 'X' over her chest with the title of my 'exiled follower'

It still took around 12 people to kill her, so it seemed. She stood there, exiled, with 8 -10 people targeting her, and she did not die.

It seems extremely bugged. People were cursing jason, and I put out an order describing how jason cannot develop this mechanic properly.

I'm sure there were other forumers on there, maybe someone will confirm this all and give their more informed take on it.

Anyway, eventually, we got her killed.

At this point, we are all united and happy, we have a ton of food, and we can spend some time celebrating that we had worked together so well all life. I had a gentleman insist on burying me away from the town where my grave will not be disturbed, out of respect for my contribution (again, all I did was use the leadership mechanics for the benefit of everyone).

So ultimately, a mixed success in terms of how the game is working out right now. If the town had been less united in faction or in mentality, it could have gotten extremely messy and impossible to control, but it did not.

That was all of the drama, I died after passing on leadership to a girl who, while is not a forumer, seemed to know enough of the game and leadership to be a suitable heir. I forget her name - sorry.

Anyone know what's up with the posse mechanic?

A guess - the posse size may have been determined when the first attack began. To get the benefits of exile, you might have to drop and create a new posse.

yea something feels strange with the posse system. was also just a Dover. there was one griefer trying to eat all the berries and carrots and try to anger people. it was a nice test for the killing system. some cursed him which seem to function, i did not, since it was nice to test the mechanics.

There where 5 plus people trying to kill him, but no success we where not enough somehow... dont know who the leader was either...

so yea no success then a bear came and killed all, maybe not the giriefer, thx god i died before of old age. but yea the current system either has a bug or its super complicated at least we did not manage.

Some more experiences?

Wrote also here some ideas about a more simple version:

I agree with wondible. That is most likely what happened. Still it's a bug because it should be updated once the person has been exiled, otherwise it opens up the possibility of it being exploited.

Awesome!  Thanks for sharing, I'd call that great success! Nice policy on medical treatment.  Sadly it seems to progress in OHOL we're gonna have to develop social structure and dare I say a culture.

I'd like to see jobs in town become more standardized aka a guild system.  Not in the traditional sense of a "guild" as we know it in games rather the archaic version of profession based guilds with industry do's and don'ts, apprentices, journeyman etc.

jason,

we need a "/leader" to find the leader quickly please. (is there currently a way to find the leader now? idk.)

when i was an astor, there was luna astor. she trapped four noobs in a property fence prison.

she killed them while i spent 3-5 mins trying to find the leader. and that's with hetuw mod zoomed out max.

Good idea. If you tried to attack her an arrow would have appeared pointing to the leader.
however another command without the need for attacking would be good.

Everyone is coming up with cool ideas on here.

/leader would be a great command for finding a leader.

It would also be great to have some mechanic that makes finding a suitable heir easier. It can take upwards of fifteen minutes to scout out a decent replacement.

Sounds like there are mixed results with the posse system - I think this is the rule for it:

YOU MUST INITIATE AN ATTCK AFTER THE INDIVIDUAL HAS BEEN EXILED TO AVOID CLASSIFYING THEM AS AN ALLY DURING THE ATTACK.

This should definitely be patched, because if they are exiled during the attack then they do not deserve to maintain the ally bonus.

can we also get:

/ally

/follower

thanks!

that would be great!

Also would be nice to have a reverse order system, so that followers can also say something back like a call for help. (UPDATE: of course with a limit per time period and in worst case the leader can still exile him...)

like:

/shout

We would need a cooldown on /shout to prevent the leader from being spammed by requests...

Unless it was an unintrusive ping that lets the leader know their assistance is requested - like an arrow and a /yoohoo sound.

@Cordy I was the guy who tried helping you kill Luna before she died of old age. I also got trapped in the property fence... first time I've seen that trick. Thankfully I'm a good yummer and was able to last 15 mins until she died of old age. I made a bunch of tacos and burritos... Hope the town is still doing well.

how does the fence trapping trick work?

was thinking about if we could not use the ally / exile system to use wall / doors by default protect against exiled people by limiting their ability to cross / remove doors and walls if they are in minority.

I feel like this already is a thing to a certain extent.

Smiths should know to use a round stone to hammer iron, not the hammer. Smith's know how to scrap old tools.

Farmers should know to start compost piles before the straw is turned to baskets or clothes.

Bakers should know to distribute their power among a variety of foods o boost town yum. They know not to store food in the way of the kitchen... (actually, most bakers keep all the food right in the kitchen. I don't know why food rooms are not more common - an out of the way storage room where all completed food is taken after the kitchen has made it. This would also solve the issue of bakeries being filled with mothers and babies.)

Even undertakers should know to bury the family significantly out of the way.

It gets tricky with the more abstract roles like the 'leader' or 'chief' or however you look at the person with exiling authority.

From my experience as a leader, a role I often seek out because of how big the impact of a good leader can be on tackling issues and guiding development, I find there to be a ton of unspoken rules.

-Do not think that being the leader makes you entitled to the nice shit. As a matter of fact, I often give up hats and pants to naked people when I am the leader. Don't steal from babies, or you risk being seen as tyrannous. When you give up the nicer gear to your subjects, you are often seen as generous and are respected as a result.

-consider preparing a police force - literally just a group of people with knives/bows that you coordinate with early on in life. coordinate policy for when a posse is needed so that you can save yourself scrambling together a posse later on if a threat arises (rying to get people to understand how to fight off a griefer once the griefing starts is super hard and annoying - make that the police's job if such a situation arises). Train them on the 'I will kill...' and 'I join you' commands. Come up with a system of practical loyalty between you, them, and the town. Then part ways until calamity strikes, going about regular business til then.

-When it comes to carrying out justice, being more reactive than proactive is good. Let the town grow to hate certain members on their own. Once they want them out, be ready to side with the masses. If you try to instigate an exile or a 'justice killing' you risk being seen as tyrannous.

-Avoid placing orders that are unnecessary or are only meant for a small group of people. Your most important power is your power to order. The last thing you want to do is train your town to ignore the order ping. If you are ordering it, be sure it is relevant to most people. I only use it for warnings and to introduce my successor upon my death.

-Lastly, tying into the last point, name a successor that is competent! Take 10 or 15 minutes toward the end of your life to scout out your heir. Pick someone who has been working and does not cause drama. Ask them if they are familiar with leadership mechanics. Consider taking the time to train them if you have nothing pressing to do and they are unfamiliar with leading.

There's the leadership guild! It's a lonely guild each life, but oh boy is the impact high (not to mention you get a front seat of the drama).
