In Github, search onelife_easy_install. Follow the instructions to build the server. If you encountered problems with ufw, I have posted an issue in that repository. Besides, the easy install script uses the official build script which will cause problems such as no green biomes spawning. In the official OneLife repository you can find the solution for this problem. It's a simple command, linking OneLifeData7 to the server folder. You need to do this fix BEFORE running the server. If you have run the server, do a rm -f *.db before doing the fix.
OMG... I want to know if there's actually people went through all this....

I didn't actually build one. I just imagine that if you plant crops around the kitchen, it would be more efficient to cook stuff. Also makes it easier for farmers to drop by and eat at the kitchen.

Depending on how long you've been gone, the biggest changes to this game recently is the allowance for mods and the end-game rocket ship. If you've been gone really long, you may be interested in the diesel engine and all its related technologies.
In my last life I played as a leader. Someone came to me and accused player X for killing the sheep. I exiled X at once to prevent further losses. However, when I went to check the pen, I found out that the mouflon was spared. I sincerely thought it was griefing and went back to X to find if she could explain it. However, X was killed and cursed before I could say anything.
I genuinely felt bad for X. I don't think she deserves to be killed.
I would like to know if you will consider this behavior griefing?
Hi, I'm not sure if it's a feature or a bug. I was born as jungle people. My craving is cooked fish. I went to the tundra to fish. I can hold and pick items in tundra so the server population should be less than 30. But when I clicked on the ice hole, nothing happened. The baited fishing pole wasn't thrown in. And my character just shaked once, as when you try to grab something that can't be picked.
Is that a feature?
If you play a local server you might be interested in some settings you can toy with. Check out this reply by wondible and read that.
Most notably
echo 0 > settings/mapCellForgottenSeconds.ini echo 1 > settings/skipLookTimeCleanup.ini echo 0 > settings/longTermNoLookCullEnabled.ini echo 1 > settings/forceEveLocation.ini echo 0 > settings/forceEveLocationX.ini echo 0 > settings/forceEveLocationY.ini echo 0 > settings/forceEveAge.ini
Thanks, that helped!
I found my old camp while wandering around. I believe the last death location is stored in a none db file. Since I only backup the db files, the server spawned me in a random location. All my stuffs survived the update. However, biomes seem to have changed around my camp, as well as new resources being generated. Overall, updating your Linux server is feasible and reasonably easy.
I tried using the PullAndBuildTestSystem.sh, but lots of errors poped up, complaining about can't do ln -s because of existing files.
I backed up all .db and settings/ files, then did a fresh build. Which is successful, but I lost my game data even after copying the *.db files back.
Am I doing this wrong? Is there a way to update prviate server without losing game data?
I think it's quite easy to setup a private server and it will be the most elegant solution to your needs. The detailed how-to is posted by Jason in post: https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=112
If you only have a windows machine, it is possible to install a virtual machine to run Linux. The tutorials are numerous online.
