Haven't got a chance to play, so far I've heard they are for griefing.

Can they help with livestock or alert us to bears or murder. Can we name them?

Actually, in the interest of not breaking the game accidentally (by making the Cain game different from the main game, with the unknown side-effects of that), what if the Cain game is exactly the same as the main game?

If you're the first Cain born on a server, you spawn as a Cain Eve, with normal placement rules, etc.  But Cain females can only have Cain babies.  That's it.

Of course, all these Cain characters would have to be marked.  The most obvious metaphor is literally a troll village full of green characters (think Shrek), and the regular villagers coming by with pitchforks from time to time.  But any mark will do, I think.

I want to be careful here about making unintentional political statements.  If they are close enough to the main population to interact, I feel like the game could easily become focused on that story, and swamp everything else.  I mean, the story of that clash sounds hilarious and amazing... but it's not really what this game is about.

I could put them far enough away so that they will never interact with the main population.  But still, the idea of having them follow the normal rules for Eve spawning and babies seems like a safe choice.  They can build a village out there, but under the same stresses as everyone else.

Think of it like the savage barbarians in the north or whatever.
Sure you'll get people trying to get there on perpose, they are welcome to play with all the town killers if they want.

Meanwhile the rest of society can get on with things.

#53 Re: Main Forum » Cure myself » 2018-09-14 12:45:56

Self healing would be bad as griefers could save themselves whenever someone tries to stop them.

I think the town doctor is a fairly under appreciated job. You don't have much time to heal someone, even more so if you get hurt further from town. Often I see people die in hospital because no one was around to heal them.

Your basically fucked if you get shot with an arrow or bitten by a snake.

#54 Re: Main Forum » When you curse only you see the message » 2018-09-14 03:51:08

Eh, You've already admitted to griefing. So if you did vet cursed then you deserve it.

I've had a few random people throw a curse at me when I killed a suspicious kid. The town forgot about it and moved on, Few lives later and the curse points are gone.

Guy spends every life trying to grief, gets cursed by multiple towns. Complains.

#55 Re: Main Forum » What do you spend your time in-game? » 2018-09-14 03:32:40

Usually I just make a ton of compost. I feed sheep and grow wheat and carrots when needed. Normally I can make some wool clothing on the side too.
It keeps towns from dying off, lots of soil for the farmers and bakers can make pies out of the byproduct.

Sometimes I try to talk to my siblings or mother. If we make it to old age, I ask them how their life was.

Mum hated me because my "dad was a prostitute" and implied that I'd probably die soon. Truth is she probably disliked me for being a boy, it happens. She tried to name me Butthole but it turned into Butch.

I was tempted by the bow and arrow out in the open. A dark part of me wanted me to shoot her but I resisted the urge. I lived up to the name Butthole by making lots of sheep shit and compost. I shoveled so much shit that a brand new shovel I made broke and needed to replaced within 20 years or so. You jokingly told me "You sure like shit", in response i tried to dump some st your feet but you moved out the way just in time.

You where the only person to talk to me or show any appreciation for my work. Sadly I failed when trying to help you with cows. I had no pie to feed you and you died while roping a calf. The calf ended up dying  but Butch II (A baby I named after myself earlier) promised she would get cows. That kid even made it to old age.

Well both of us lived longer then mother expected.  Dunno if mum was joking or she just hated boys.

Stop raising cursed babies, people, it's a seriously dumb move.

Hopefully people will learn to be more vigilant. Never seen multiple cursed in one town. They aren't even twins.

Guess that's one downside to the curse system, griefers can idenifty each other and team up. Wonder if some of the mums are secretly griefers looking out for their own.
Or when someone gives a cursed a weapon, could all be one big conspiracy.

#60 Re: Main Forum » Still thinking about griefers. » 2018-09-12 16:07:03

Honestly Jason, I don't think griefer prevention is that major of a priority atm. Stealing/Sabotage is minor griefing compared to murdering an entire city. You can bake more pies and get another lamb.

I'd probably guess Medieval or Roman times, At least for the big cities anyway.

What if someone just happens to be wearing a sheepskin.......

Such a peinful death for an innocent newbie who put on some sheepskin because it's better then being naked.

I'm not going to implement specific solutions to specific forms of griefing (obesity or whatever), because there are an infinite number of different forms of griefing, and if I plug one rat hole, they'll just chew through and make another one.  If they can't eat all the food, they can always throw it all in the woods to hide it, right?  One cart can hold a lot of pies....

I'm looking for a general system that allows players to define their own rules and enforce them as they see fit.

As for the mark looking cool, I don't think that's a problem.  Yes, some people will strive for it, but who cares?  Some people strive to be bad even without a cool mark.  I'm not going to be able to stop people from wanting to be "bad," nor do I necessarily want to encourage certain behavior over others.

If you discover that cursing players really keeps them motivated to continue doing whatever you have decided is "bad," you'd probably want to stop cursing them, wouldn't you?

But if cursing works to help you identify the people you want to identify across lives, then you will use that information however you wish to use it.  If the information is there, the information that you yourself placed there on that person, I can't help you if you chose not to use it (by "you," I'm talking about the collective player population).

As for something that is legitimately uncool..... with the prevalent ironic sensibility, I simply cannot fathom it.  The most uncool thing in the world would become cool in this context.

Put sheep shits on there heads.

Good call. This way, they can't be reborn.

Yep, Don't wanna take can't take any chances. I've had alot of success making every baby speak at birth. I had a few run away as soon as I asked which makes me think I've stopped a few cursed from being born.

Although one time I was killed for stabbing someone else's cursed baby. I think it was worth it to get rid of a likely griefer, even if it meant sacrificing myself.

#66 Re: Main Forum » Still thinking about griefers. » 2018-09-12 00:09:56

Honestly I feel like we have it under control for the most part. For me the worst griefing is people killing all sheep or filling in trash pit pens so sheep escape.

I'm all for buffing the curse system, the vast majority of cursed players deserved their curse. A visual indication for cursed would be nice since alot of mums still allow them to live. One time a cursed baby born to me survived by running to the nursery fire and got fed no questions asked. Hid behind the other babies for almost the entire time and ran off with a basket of pies at age 3. Bit later he cameback as an adult and killed my daughter but ran away again. He repeated this a couple more times before getting killed eventually. Still, The town survived another 4 or so generations.

One thing I agree with in thag email is the ease of running away. This allows you to get away with any crime but murder. They steal tools like a hammer or firebow and then you have to spend 20 minutes chasing them until you finally get the drop on them.

Maybe cursed players should move a bit slower then normal players. So no more getting away at age 3 and being near impossible to kill unless your on murder slowdown. Makes griefing alot harder if every townie can run faster then you.

OHOL is greater without the apocalypse.

OHOL was greater when the Eves spawned closer together, so there was a greater chance old cities would be found.

I never experienced the apocalypse can you just tell me what happens it sounds so cool

White flash death message you died to the apocalypse.

Then eve hell then apocalypse in 45 minutes. Rinse and repeat you didnt miss much but one persons fun at the cost of bunch of peoples dissapointment

Sounds like a griefers wet dream. I bet trolls would be on that in a heart beat, They would cream there pants everytime they wipe out all civilization.

I don't think it should be able to kill literally everything, Maybe something like a nuke to target another city. But the other city could build there own nuke to fire back if someone tries thus ending both civilizations. At least the lower tech places will probably survive so we wouldn't have to endure Eve Hell.

its seems straight hair lady has ginger kids and blondie has black ones pretty often

have you thought about hairstyles?
genetics with one parent is bad as all you see is same look kids which gets hard to know which one is which, i even been chased for looking like someone else and killed people accidentalyl for same reason
having more char types is to identify others so its not so good ideea to have same looking people from same parent

hairstyles would make it similar looking from same parent, and it makes sense cause hair is a sprite
it would add so many looks and originality to game characters, many combinations, similar looking people but not same

also have you thought about mixing up the character sprites?
that would be cool, or at least the hairs, maybe facial elements

i mean now we need gameplay related stuff after so many tutorials, skins and food, would be nice to have higher tech higher difficulty useful things, so not so important but in future might be simple enough to make an update like that

I want female models with male facial hair.

Milk is pretty easy apart from the need for buckets which can be expensive. But at least the buckets are a one time cost and be reused forever.

Why not do Peins berry farm and then make milk the main "food".

End the huge berry fields that need half the town to maintain them.

#72 Re: Main Forum » De-streaking the Random Number Genderator » 2018-09-09 23:10:40

I always thought it was more likely for boys to be born then girls. I have a lot of lives where I've only had boys but never only girls.

#73 Re: Main Forum » Is it possible to survive without farming? » 2018-09-09 23:02:44

I thinks it's possible for a small family, You can still make tools if you survive but obviously hard without farming. You could still actually make pies/Bread but you have to use wild wheat and mutton.

for specifically modern stuff i'd like plastics to be a durable material that could be used in many things. Imagine seeing those abandoned towns littered with it.

A permanent fireplace would be nice too but yeah easier firestarting would be nice. Modern day could give us stoves that work like more convenient fires.
