Hmm thanks for posting this, I had no idea there were so many options for some of these commands!
So if I say "curse my baby", it will always be the youngest one, correct? Not the nearest or next youngest if dead already?
Curse my baby is the one that applies to the last born baby to you (dead or alive.) Basically you only use that command if the most recent baby has been a pain.
arkajalka wrote:predicted this in the earlier topic about this new curse system. One solution could be that you can only stack one curse a life. To prevent mass cursing, griefers are eventually getting area locked from rift if they continue their ways. This would bring some drama to the rift too as the curse punishment wouldnt be so harsh. Basically now you can get mass cursed out of the map for some ridiculous reasons. No room for error.
This should have already been fixed according to this:
https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLife/ … 777d3825c3However if fug is right then it seems the system is currently bugged. I don’t think it needs more attention aside from fixing these bugs, so the new twin curse limitations work as intended.
It's not. Currently waiting on the death logs to update for today, curse logs are already updated so I can at least post that part to prove a curse went through. Will edit the post later to show Belle lines up with that hash when possible.
CURSE YOU
You phrases; Targets nearest player.Does this target the nearest Alive player OR I can curse a recently dead one too by standing on his corpse?
Nearest alive player, had to specifically seek this one out myself because I wanted to curse a dead griefer but wouldn't have been old enough if I waited longer than the curse you phrase length.
Bumping this thread due to thinking there's a bug in the system. Just got cursed by a twin player when it shouldn't have been possible. Might look into curse logs tomorrow/later to show proof along with video if the replay system decides to work. Jk. Playback isn't working for that, anyways I'll just go to the curse log tomorrow whenever it's updated.
That curse went through by Belle, ding and purple text. Assuming either:
A). The first twin was able to have or earn a curse token during her life
B). Something isn't working right
C). It's not working at all.
I can think of a situation where there are only three families left and two of them have 3-4 towns and one of them has only one town. It could be beneficial for the family with one town to conquer another, that would increase chance of surviving drastically - war could help in conquering a town.
The thing is we have no real purpose. Family that survived an arc won't be remembered since we have no such thing as "winners of arcs" tab in main site onehouronelife.com. There is no reward and therefore no motivation to be the last surviving family right now, so yes, making war is more like troll tool than actuall thing with purpose.
Maybe it would be cooler to do only temporary peaces when both families need help but in the end every family was aiming to be the last surviving family.Wars could be fun when there was real purpose and reason to do them.
Setting the doomsday clock two minutes to midnight doesn't help your family survive at all. All you're doing by conquering another town/lineage is moving those players from lineage B to lineage C or A in the situation where you kill off one of the three lineages. There's still going to be 40-60 players the only difference is you've moved the game closer to end game which is the opposite of beneficial for your lineage as you're likely to then die off once the Eve window reopens as players spread into the many new roots of Eve lineages. So unless your only goal is to reset the server there's literally no benefit in the current game to remove a lineage (except explained in my other post where another lineage can take its place or your sole goal is to reset the arc.)
This is also not a battle royale game if you haven't noticed. Making random lineages winners in an arc doesn't suddenly make the game more fresh or exciting, it just means some trolls finally sniped off the other last standing lineage.
If you wanna play fortnite instead of ohol I recommend downloading any of the battle royale games on the market. You want ohol where its more sensible to kill? Go play Rust.
Anhigen wrote:Straight up tho, I'm not going to sit and come up with 14 error names--like a bad username choice--up to 6 or 7 times each time I play a mom because "total naming freedom is just so bad ass".
Come on, it wouldn't be that bad. I doubt you would't pick a valid name in 3 tries... The list could stay for lazy people, maybe an option in settings what to do if a name is taken.
Come on, freedom of naming would be so cool
The naming list is generally fine. Sure it could be expanded by adding more valid names into it but full freedom would devolve into stuff like Nigger Nigger, XxBlazeItxX WeedDudeLmao, and stuff like that. I understand how you can want freeform but I'd rather him just grab another name list to expand the name pool (there's like 11000+ different names to choose from, I'm sure we're still at the point certain names haven't ever been given out in game. Not even counting last names either.)
The thing is there's only two times where its ever beneficial to declare war in the first place.
1. There are enough families that losing one doesn't matter OR the Eve window is still open so a new family pops up anyways. Because you are going to potentially shift from your family to the family you attack you are just shooting your foot to ever attack another family. To harm another is to harm oneself which is just incredibly shortsighted of anyone playing like that. So unless you are locked to a family or always blocked from joining a family you're at war with there is never a sensible reason to declaring war on others except muh arr-pee.
2. You are actively trying to end the arc. This just means you're trying to do a reset which has low value as most the time arcs are ended very prematurely due to people wanting to Eve or do early game. The only way to really remedy this is sprinkling Eves in every once and a while like we've seen twice this arc or just setting the reset condition to be a timer instead of the family condition.
Having cross family curses matters because without them we seen the rise of people who specifically spawned as Eve just to attack places (Most arcs until recently specifically suffered from this and before that they'd spawn in with swords and just massacre towns.) I could honestly due without war because my god the sword has a history of being absolutely dumb. If you've never seen the video of me killing 16 people second handedly with the nerfed sword (can't attack every 10 seconds) or before that the original butter knife sword with Michael Punch I recommend checking that out.
I think its fair being able to curse people trying to raid because honestly I don't want to be around those kinds of people. Lazy, shortsighted, and likely just trolls. No reason to want to be around people whose idea of a good time is senselessly killing in "a multiplayer game of parenting and civilization building."
Well glad to see we have a working system again.
The effects of speed changes in relation to player figures in the vicinity remain to be seen, but the following I don't agree with at all:
Twins/trips/quads don't get curse tokens to spend.
A fair chunk of my circa 1k hours of OHOL are from playing as quads. I love teamplay, and one of the most effective methods of eliminating griefers in this game I have found is coordinated teamplay, which includes mass-cursing. Yes, mass-cursing can also be a problem, but this is not the way to solve it.
Going to disagree. The ability to instantly give someone up to a 400 curse radius is way too strong for anyone to easily abuse in a quad group. It's much better to lean safely than to make it so you can potentially boost two peoples an hour curse score by 4.
It's been a bug since they were released. You can also change a card by making a pile of two then taking the cards back out. Isn't/wasn't worth ever reporting because well no one can really use cards properly anyways.
How hard is it to just make a slowdown item instead of bunch of growling monkeys chasing a guy Benny Hill style? You shouldn't need a bunch of random people to be deputy and it's bad enough when you have one to two people standing around now you need them in the case of the big baaaad griffer.
Curse changes were good
Kill changes are in a good direction.
This is silly magic.
Giving twins+ more mechanics to help destroy towns is bad (you can only curse one, and now they get a speed bonus. Noice.)
The rift solves (2) and (4) handily, and recent BB distribution changes have brought us closes to (1) for the first time, but (3) is sacrificed.
Yeah, I don't know about that. We've had much greater permanence before and I wouldn't say clearly everything every 2-3 days gives any semblance of it. Compare it to before you did that goofy 8 hour cull timer.
We had villages that would spring back up that were thought to be lost to the culling which was always a delight. San-Cal lasted like an actual month, Goose Town lasted 3 weeks+, Casino town lasted so long that its name got changed multiple times throughout its history (and that's cool.)
1. is basically just a skin. Sure, I prefer being some models (or in some families) more than other but at the end of the day that doesn't change anything between life to life. Whether I'm Balls, Cock, or Gay doesn't matter since its just a surname attached to whatever skin I got for the hour. While its nice to have a lineage live for awhile it's probably the weakest of the four in terms of what makes the game good.
2. This is probably one of the most important features of the game as it feels good to see your own personal plans mature and grow. Back when I used to make sauerkraut all the time you would literally see crocks of it still around from previous days due to the massive amount I would make and the lack of people eating it at times. Hell, it was nice seeing all the mango trees over in Casino town still kicking around when I planted them on the mango update day. Remember what happened when you introduced the apocalypse the first time? It nearly killed the game which shows permanence does matter to the players.
3. This is probably the second most important thing as late game isn't developed enough to last multiple days let alone a week right now. The game is probably 8~12 hours of moving on up until you top out and go into maintenance mode. With lack of 2 it can feel completely fruitless to do anything which leads to towns becoming even more samey. When places last people start making them look nice and when they get to that point they start becoming special. Town names, town landmarks, and such make living somewhere feel good but its hard to want to when your work is potentially wasted before you even go to bed for the night.
4. While towns are now closer what actually meaningful dialog do towns have? "Imma declare war so I can shift click you >:))))" While language was a cool update you can't exactly go anywhere near another town without making sure to carry paper, a rubber ball, a pencil, and a knife otherwise you're likely to just get shanked for getting near. Not only that, the whole war sword arc pretty much flipped the game on its head from pve to pvp where now you have groups of people attacking places (and oh boy are those people idiots.)
So the rift makes 1 work, the constant wipes ruin 2, the game isn't really fleshed out enough at the moment for 3 to work out well, and 4 exists but right now has almost no reason to exist.
+1 to fug
A chance for ONE new family, even if every 24 hours, would alleviate the two family dilemma.
Made me think maybe there should be a set limit on the arc.
If the the reset just happened at like 7500 years regardless, I don't think people would mind. Especially if there was some kind of reward for making it to the end. What the reward would be, I have no idea.
Retiring names is a cool idea imo. If you last to the end of the arc maybe your Eve name gets on a "high score." For example: if Eve boots lives long enough you can't use the name for X amount of time while having a special section of the site devoted to you. This makes the name special along with those that helped you.
We're not.
I think three days is the bare minimum. I'd like to see a week at least for each and every rift if possible. Maybe have a small eve window every day to allow people who only care about lineage name to exist?
I don't think respawning items is reasonable but maybe having new families would help. To put in perspective towns lasted weeks before the arc system and to be honest a few weeks is too long for most places before wearing off the novelty.
Arc needs to last long enough to care about it but be fresh enough for new eves to make a claim.
Yeah, probably should be able to rip the motor out of cars since they're kind of useless atm.
At the very least you can make an argument for using a car to get iron since you'd just be taking the engine in and out when mining for more iron.
All I can say is lmao.
You decide to act like a child and grief, make a fuss in the discord, get banned not just on one but two different accounts then make a forum post crying about it.
10/10. Very good show on your part. Jord is a very reasonable person and for you to get banned by him is a show of your character not his. You've been warned plenty of times considering you've been warned on both accounts banned from the discord multiple times. Forums aren't a place for you to make up a sob story to try to weasel your way out of your punishment.
Can we make it so that whenever a player goes to dtown they have to spend forty minutes or more there? Even if they die? Right now they would just keep re-rolling /die.
Seconding this. At least having a bare minimal sentence prevents someone from just killing themselves as a donkey.
still can get 4 accounts or 4 friends to spawn separately and go curse someone every 30 minutes
takes no effort to ruin someones day/week and its hard to fix, it is a horrible idea to have curses go down weekly if using a threshold system instead of a barrier system
Troll says its bad therefore it must be alright lel.
Why not just reintroduce a snowball-esque mechanic? Something that slows you down when hit so you can catch up to someone instead of trying to do some weird moving mechanic.
Maybe you toss a net on someone and they're slowed for 10-15 seconds (which is going to be slightly obvious because nets are big) or do something like that has been brought up before like a bolas? This allows for someone to be slowed and then you kill them. Of course these items need a decent amount of range otherwise the stalemate of running away from each other continues.
Players who are hit with a bolas or net drop their current held item until the status wears off in which they're then holding said item or maybe it just gets destroyed in the process (though that makes nets hella expensive to toss on people.) Though we still have an issue where you can't ever beat an armed bow if they growl first so maybe nets or bolas have range 4~5 so a bow isn't impossible to beat?
Like the movement speed mechanic sounds incredibly silly like absolutely silly. Can you imagine the proper way for a group to travel is for everyone to point their knives at the leader growling? I mean if they wanted to be safe they could travel with snowballs instead which again just breaks any sort of game immersion. "Okay guys anyone else coming to the next town over? Grab your knives and snowballs then follow me! Choo choo here comes the growling train."
Two round stones + rope = bolas
Net is already in the game.
Because they have zero impact on actual game play?
Because we're more interested in additional uses for dogs?
Because maladjusted players haven't figured out how to grief it yet?Go back to writing code. We'll stroke your ego once you present us with something worthwhile.

That's a yikes from me. I'm a huge critic of Jason myself but he is currently working to remedy things at the moment. No need to be so hostile when he's at least working on making things better.
As stated before: No arc name anywhere where you can look = hard to remember.
Right now it's sort of like a town with no name even if you remember the town is named Panic Revolt it's lost to the next generation.
Maybe put the current arc name on the homepage next to the years if possible? Maybe when you're born it gives you a current year + arc name? It needs to be clear so people can remember the arcs otherwise they blend together.
While it's not perfect these are good changes. The PvP system still has problems but with changes to curses + PvP we're seeing that Jason can once again be trusted to change things (eventually)
I mean there should be some basic time block to ensure abuse like suiciding as a donkey isn't a viable option to avoid punishment. We already have proof of this occurring and is still something that can happen even with the ban radius being extended. Spawn as a donkey? Just call out in the discord for someone to walk into the wilderness to try to birth you. This completely bypasses the whole system and all it requires is you have a friend to spawn you in somewhere on the map which defeats the purpose of 94 people cursing you.
While there might be various shades of grays in play scale isn't it safe to say someone who pisses off 94 people is clearly playing wrong? At the very least put some sort of restriction to keep people in DT if they don't reach old age as that at least puts a problematic player away for 46 minutes instead of being able to suicide in two minutes and potentially come straight back to the rift.
Switching (right click) two full baskets still stacks them and spreads what the lower one contains.
Also can still launch stuff over the rift wall this way. I would assume dying + being injured with items in hand on cluttered spaces launches stuff over the rift as well.
Edit: Dying/injury doesn't seem to launch stuff. Just baskets.
