Problem: Not able to settle faraway-place without taking (stealing) too much from original camp. Solution:
Not hard to implement new item two-horse-carriage (mentioned earlier).
Taking one horse away from it when you're ready to go (get female to new town-to-be) would be good. Nothing else needed, except one can take a horse from two-horsecart so it becomes horsecart we all know and kind of love now - so idea behind this is when I've set up a rudimantary camp I can go ask at home/other village some eligible lady.
Solves problem of no resources since you can go rather far with both horsecart and horse.
Why make hard things like sitting in cart/such, this is ez and as usable.
Though I don't have 15+ years of experience so I don't know if that's possible to do lel.
Me me I have !
Though I feel *a bit* ashamed to up this post
planting milkweed isn't fun
I understand, you do not like farming (I see no real difference planting four bowls of mw seeds to any other kind of farming, I understand you want more for less-some plants just don't work like that-planted sparragus irl ? 3 years for rare stalks).
Also, please DO NOT pick all the milkweed near towns though, I've had 10 years ride and not found one-sometimes when I find one it is so far the seed decays before I can plant it (once today so far).
There are some limiting factors IRL, milkweed is a big one in game. Don't make towns die (and don't claim it's easy to find seeds once everything or even most within 500 tiles is picked clean).
We cannot even trade it (I don't see moving it with airplane as option). IDK why everything should be easy. This is one of the rare hard things.
Even if it was hard having a way to make lots of rope would be amazing.
? I do not understand, saying first it should be easy then saying it won't bother you when it's hard.
(As I explained) it can be easy-if I'm naked, not wanting to watch my food pips all the time, I make 3-5 composts fast when young, plant most of'em milkweed, and mostly town kids water'em (even newbies). When I come back some are gone, but that amount some left like I stated above. Also, more ppl realize it is valuable asset.
Or suggest making rope from oil, might even make some kind of trade possible (if other stuff could be made from... idk, only from pond-water at the site). Encouraging trade is hard, but maybe riding to town with cart of lassoes/baskets of rope could make non-oil-town boost other tech for trading reasons.
Anyhow, IDK why Vampirism isn't a thing-it would fit age of the game and still have one hour one life, since even if you'd live to 100 you'd be dead half of it. And the need to feed more would prevent from living forever, or usually I think ever to hundred while giving very nice stories both for vampire and town.
Since you have asked, no, I have not read Terry Pratchett's books.
Funny kind of medieval fantasy with humor, also there is (or was) one movie or two, I think hogfather, and this too (in English, didn't bother googling more so: https://www.google.com/search?q=youtube+colour+of+magic ) - I strongly suggest to everyone. Very light reading but he was smart so no inconsistencies as far as I recall. Best read before going to sleep !
I usually see no problem, unless someone wants smithing done I do fast 3-5 composts, then adventure, come back and plant all those milkweed. So there's enough of it to go around, I basically do two carts and 2-3 baskets(EDIT:Buckets sry), others have done other stuff. Also, if there are other composts I use'em (my composts are going to be ready very soon anyhow).
I do not plant it in middle of town, a bit on the side (20 tiles or so), so only few know at first until I tell I've done those items and go use it. Then it's like goldrush. If no oilpump at water then I do it in swamp or later in life when I can move cart. If I have bp it's easy to get some water from swamps, just bp a bowl and carry bucket after planted mw-also most kids water mw farm so when I see that happening I can go my first adventure and let'em.
Edit: It usually takes two hoes though, so ppl are sore about making'em sometimes. And if no more iron nearby town is doomed anyhow-or opposite, with mw ppl can get horses to gather iron further away easier.
@Spoonwood
Someone else needs to cut flintstones tho', they're four per hit in ohol.
Anyhow, you did not address the issue I suggested in any way but put me down Sad.
I think it would make wonderful stories - have you read Terry Pratchett's books ? That kind of stuff. Not to serious but fun stories.
@spoonwood:
Ok, maybe not let vampires feed on dead people or horses. Though IMO they could sleep in horse-carts during daytime.
Also: what do you mean recent updates being absurd ? It's Jason's work he's free to do as he pleases, wet towel you.
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4630780
This could be food-source, just keep runners or /die'rs in there for thirty seconds.
Think of all the drama it'd add. People getting together with firebrands to hunt vampire !
FFS it's stone-age to middle-age time, this is legit !
Topic: Vampirism
Since we already have magic gates and such, vampirism sounds like it could easily add more feel and drama to game.
More very dramatic and rich content !
Imagine the stories that could form:
-you need to feed on your family or others, clicking on them (they not notice)
-after every feed your next feed must be sooner, hence no eternal (though long) lives
-feeding too much on someone will end up his/her becoming vampire, living forever and not getting kids
-at nighttime (to be installed ingame) if you were good at making, say, engines, your family would get sacrificial kids for you
-maybe even have a coffin or container of some kind to hide during daylight or be tired when hiding in tree shadow
-mosquitoes could keep vampirism-gene so if you get bitten by infected mosquitoes you'll be one
-only you know you are vampire
-capable vampires who know, say, how to make engine, could be hidden by families for generations
-vampires fed by "eve-traps" as described by pein
-would you disown your undead kid or would you protect him/her ? Imagine your 5 year old daugther coming back from the jungle as vampire, she is a noob and didn't know what happened to her, and asks you whats wrong with her
-as ages past (every 50 years) your appearance becomes more rugged, older than any old, maybe leave dust behind when walking
-also one way to gain vampirism: people build a crypt for you (you were "king" or such), %-chance to rise every night...
Nobody would know you are vampire except you'd need to be in shadow during daytime.
Maybe even werewolf:
-you become werewolf every now and then-maybe even create a moon timer
-lose some control of some movement, destroy stuff, eat family members (need for peg-legs)
-nobody knows you are one but you're stronger, faster, all normal stuff
-good defense against griefers since you're faster, can take a shot and shoot back, though dying in the process
-getting bitten by wolf and fed pork you'd have 15% (?) chance to become werewolf
Stake cost ? Take a pie, make cart, go out of town and bring back 8 straight shafts for stakes, 8 curved for charcoal. Why talk about insects when there are tyrannosaurs around ?
Kids ask me job? often.
I give couple suggestions if town is short on a thing. If not I say sky is the limit, we have everything, have fun ! (Actually I usually say hf more than luv u kid).
Often no soil so I say if you'd make one or two compost it would be great ! Or when old enough, iron's only at 20 now so needed later on badly. And that I will go east searching once I am no longer getting kids - usually kids see while I take care of them I do baking/smith/composts, hence I often see them ask for Job.
RP'ers or random I seldom see they ask about it. Not that everyone doesn't have their place, but RP without making two composts as kid is just exploiting useful (to town) people.
One day I'll take couple more drinks and waste all parasitic RP'ers in town
Do take into account Jason doesn't accept anyone elses donations of images, he draws everything by hand and since racism-update only one race/town. I hope he's planning on removing racism by having either adoption or drawing (takes lots of time) new images for some races.
It's just one bad apple in another family in town to start racewar I'm tired of. It accomplishes people riding away from towns, I agree, and adventuring. When you happen to be in town bringing stuff in when racewar starts it's bad.
edit: having brought two mines of iron earlier, 14 clay, I brought wood in town and was 1st victim. Probably by iron I brought - oh the iron(y). All of my kids (not SID) survived so it stopped pretty rapidly too. Also with autokill at range or (is it 2 or three?) I did only see a hole in my stomach, not (irl) being from servertown.
Yes, I admit, I should've built some boxes or such and just leave stuff next to town door, but I wanted one pie, living off wild berries takes time off adventuring.
BTW, the racism update w/ swords, violence hasn't diminished at all. I wonder if it ever will.
Vending machine store:
Item value = 1
For each bought its value +1 (or double base value if there will be one).
If none bought in one minute value -1 until price is one.
Outlets: several, so out of town can also trade (maybe cost +1).
Base value of each item may be set or not, who cares. If it is set it should be settable by input-only-terminal that would be probably fenced. Or set could be buy-value of first one bought, not sold, to prevent griefers setting value of flint to 300 and emptying store. So once you put in an item you buy it back, and sell it again.
Also, why should this be owned ? Couldn't it be town's storage ? Solve both: storage and trade. Also I can see people checking prices and riding between (now) nearby towns doing profit.
What would be the cash ? Anything. Put stuff in you get credit in that machine. Five secs to take it away if not happy at price. See prices by asking nearby, i.e. "rope price" and get answer. If you want cash, print paper with and set price to that. Fast to make, ez to trade (well, once books of paper are done heh).
Procedural tech-tree:
I see no harm (as long as apocalypses of tech-tree would happen in low enough timerate you'd still be interested in the game) in making parts of tech-tree procedurally generated.
So, farming mostly same (maybe number of hits on smithing hammer two to change or such this time, next time maybe make two at a time, double or half coal...) no harm. I don't know time-period but it would be very frustrating if it were per Eve (not to mention making eternal machines with two lineage eves creating stuff from nothing). Or per two months. For low-ping it'd hurt some things, like mentioned two-stroke-smithing hammer.
Since major changes seem to be happening very fast (see how long Tarr, respected player, had to kill people in order to be noticed after he said sword is unbalanced), I'd suggest IF this will be implemented start it by helping rather than slowing down. Not every item should be included, and things could converge at some point, like newcomen.
If you want some family to matter, and people not kill feral eves (every one is dangerous, even with sword nerf) make it so each eve has undiscovered family trait (mentioned make sometimes two items instead of one when making one item)...
Btw I've played a lot of hours, and not one eve, what's up with that ? Is it b/c I never /die and get areaban ? Or kill very rarely. (following not important) : Today I killed one, I saw her (my daughter) pick every carrot (had seeds hidden so np) when I told not, cut and spread all wheat, when I told I have several soil I made left, please farm wheat here she went on to shear all sheep.
So I stabbed her. That's how patient I am. I offered teaching earlier too.
I hope you all see how relevant that talk is to what OHOL is about---the transmission of knowledge across generations. I'm also working on a very complicated software project currently.
Anyone who underestimates Jonathan Blow's intelligence or capabilities is just.... sheesh...
o/ that'd be me, most bad words afaik.
(Next post about OHOL this one about the talk)
Disclaimer: my post had nothing to do with OHOL (oh it might since low population count in bigserver2 even).
I think I questioned his ability to convey a point. He MAY be good at his special field, but speech and his "this is everyone's problem" -nope.
Now, I've had some (few tbh) disucssions about programmers in usa universities (in, also one in our country irl), I understand the dude may have a point - that people don't know what's "under the hood" - in our small country we make people first learn the basics THEN tell how to program in higher-tier like Cpp, Java, Fortran (yes still used in math stuff a lot).
But you know what-we have professional schools (that's not college/university) that do basic teaching for that kind of high-level language teaching.
So I can see how non-college ppl can fast be taught to do non-critical parts of project (also, again, depending on expected life-cycle). But no college should (again, IMO) teach "programmers" that have no clue how hardware down there works.
I.e. how to optimize for constants, saving states, moving stuff either to other parts inside processor, which bridges are faster and need to be (almost)forced to be used. Those things can be done by higher educated/specialized people.
The project-managers (M.Sc) do choose who does what and such, so no major problem.
But critical stuff should always be coded by people who know what they do, not someone who starts programming with c++, doesn't have a clue how fast is push/pop from each processors internal storages not to mention calculations done inside processor(s).
Edit: I'll reduce my bet for Trump not to be elected to 2k€, but I still hope they build the wall. Around whole of USA, not just some borders Just kidding, thing I've wanted to say... But one wall, why not all. Some towns do it in ohol atm
Listened the stuff, so if TL;don't listen -
A misguided guy talking about how he knows about couple of lost minor technologies (forgot damascus sword making one of the famous ones), draws line of civ's falling (yup I am quite scared, now when we have almost whole worldwide civ there's no other high-lvl civ to lift us when we fall). Then moves to how programmers don't know, say, processor architecture and such when programming in c#, Java or making webpages. He tries to make a point we lose the basics, and can only do high level coding. IDK who he is, his credentials, nor do I care after half-listening.
Trust me, programmers know, they're taught with virtual processors with virtual memory channels, sizes what to flash to HDD's or where-ever and how many clock-cycles it takes, changed for every course/year so there's no shortcut (unless you pay someone to do your homework for you) before using any high-level programming. Lots of paper on project planning etc.
At least that's what I hope, IDK about those cpp for dummies books. Or if (sadly true) some company needs fast cheap coders never mind crashes, speed, incompatibilities or program lifetime curve/purpose. Compilers can not optimize everything (yet).
Using programs isn't a programmer, no more than using word-processor is being one. If you use unity w/o bit deeper knowledge and you do little documentation you're in for bit of a pain. I do not mean there's no place and time for fast'n'dirty code (it's up there, lifetime curve).
"(people) would choose the difficult and meaningful life over the easy and meaningless one"
Red flag there, why would modern life be less meaningful than harsh reality of medieval peasant, doing 14 hours days in field, meaningful work to plant potatoes ?
"It would be nice if the circumstances hadn't changed. If life was still infused with meaning and beauty"
Same. How can he see more meaning being a galley-slave than current abundance of possibilities in making your life matter ?
"Human beings were built for a specific set of circumstances."
Oh, sorry now that I read this far. A religious nut. But might as well glimpse rest since gone so far...
(ancient times) "Your life consists of sleeping on a small hard cot for only 5 hours a night."
Maybe he should learn a bit of history, for example in a bit more modern understanding it was usually the case that people slept twice or three times (medieval, changes between cultures and ages, this is european way, way of your ancestors), so sleeping until wolf's time, having couple hours housework/anything done, maybe sleep a bit, do morning work, sleep couple of hours. His idea seems to be between lives being totally simple or harsh, although I do not have context why (s)he wrote that. Could've been schoolwork but probably not, it's bit short for that and faulty, also being certain of everything isn't school way. Or for some it is of course, but not in the 1st world countries (I hope).
(about life how it should go) "A compelling narrative has a well known structure to it. The world begins in a state of disharmony. It calls out a challenge to its protagonist: come change the world, make things right again. The journey is challenging. To rectify the disharmony requires some type of transformation to occur. And the transformation requires a sacrifice. Finally, the result of the transformation connects back into the world and changes it for the better. The story is complete and we can say that something meaningful has occurred."
...wordless... Basics of psychiatry, did he read about inkstains and write the whole thing on basis of that ? About only thing taught in universities that's mainly guesswork-better take image of brains (there's good TED talk about this in youtube) and treat accordingly. However at same time, it's only medical field that doesn't use anything but talk to try to guess what's wrong, coincidence ?
All this thing was about to act civil and discuss things rather than insulting others. There shouldnt be a forum moderation policy needed for that
Yup, it should be decency by humans. I know we go further from the topic all the time but...
I did not mean to hurt her, just point that people have limited time and previous actions DO predict what will happen in future. So, if they have had enough conversations ending in stone wall and they cannot win with one person, they may ignore that person.
I do have all the time in the world, hence my "walls of text" (sorry) etc. But my post's point stands, one can cut it to pieces and hurt it piece by piece, forgetting the context of whole post. I mean the idea, whole post, not cut to pieces and giving each evaluation while the whole post should be considered.
I am sure people check every now and then those "shunned" ppl's chats and either 1) start reading their posts again or 2) wait even longer before reading their next post.
Liff's not that hard people. Just have fun, try not to insult others too much, and try to make world (or forum) better place for next incoming people ! I know this post will be cut down to pieces and reviewed-I just don't care. Have fun ! I do.
It's what I've been saying. Agreed
Same. I called them watchtowers, since three people/door to town is not rly fun (for me) to play. Don't know others might find it fun.
Load watchtower near entrance/at entrance with arrows and pies, a person inside untouchable until supplies out. Watchtower kind of very large backpack. You can open way north/south or such. Exit when mom says someone is reliable and nobody else nearby.
Sounds less OP than swords atm, or with any debuff I think they might have. Also allows trade, come in, take cart of iron, leave cart of that. Problem ? Bring a basket at a time, have a friend (eves don't need friend).
Skipping posts shows that you don't know if the posts you skipped add or do not add anything to the conversation.
...sigh... Maybe I'll start skipping your posts too.
Do you really think they started skipping your posts just because they don't like your name's two first letters ? Or might there *gasp* be a reason, like they've read enough of your cr*p and tried to argue points to get through to you, and found it impossible ?
No, that's impossible, b/c you're the all-knowing eye of universe.
Edit to Walrus below: if Spoon didn't get it by earlier posts I thought I'd point it out.
Eve tokens yup.
...
We all know it's the internet-speech (one would not necessarily tell it face-to-face, depending on person and culture). Still, some take it more seriously than others. Also, non-English-natives have hard time, for example in my language we have "please" and "thank you" embedded inside in first/last/middle word in sentence thus we're usually considered "rude" when speaking English, forgetting for example those words.
Edit example: viitsisitkö = "would you please be so kind as to..." so many just say "make..."
For trade I repeat my earlier suggestion, everything stays as it is now except:
-every 10th spring has nearby desert tile with resource that can be extracted like oil
-two of these resources are created
Two of the resources are needed for some not-essential item, say, clock. Thus -> TRADE. And persistent city, it WILL need more iron and such from far away. Only thing is how to tell its location to willing trade partners.
Add ability to add second horse/remove it to a cart. This way I can (as a male) ask someone - (with paper) to come, I have well, soil, some berries and 3 sis stew for new settlement. Is this not how the west usa was done ?
It gives easily chance to story split, many do not like to abandon kids and by that age you are too old to have any. Stealing second horse from town is good way to get a curse.
Within a week I noticed a major change, people now steal stuff from you even when you say you're teaching. Earlier they stopped, watched for a while (usually saying nothing) and left.
Example: I and two who want to learn compost (!) pick berries, put carrots, walk 20 steps from farm to empty place where I have sharp stone and such to teach. Three people come and steal our friggin' expensive (!) bowls of berry and carrot while I explain what to do next !
IDK why, even after I said teaching-bring back they went on their mission. Hasn't happened in a month or so... Is there something like spawn of new players ? I don't think a horde suddenly materialized.
Next one stealing and not returning stuff when I tell I teach gets knifed. I play 1/4th (Jason has ID can check) from earlier because people turn into stealing monsters instead of working together to teach new people.
So when you see'em crying with knife hole, don't curse me please !
