Probably... I always try to die of old age no matter what.
I did play the tutorial when it first came out. Today, I simply hit the button "get reborn".
I spawned in the last room of the tutorial. The stones didn't speak to me.
I HAD FOUR BABIES ! I kept one of them, curious to see what surounded us.
When we got free, my son decided to stay home. I explored north, and encountered a player farming carrots outside her jail, all by herself, who told me she was playing the tutorial.
I died back "home" next to my son. Still wondering why I was a captive Eve ! WHY ?
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … _id=555036
It was nice to meet you little mouse!
I called myself Jones to obey the tutorial.
I died few seconds after you, so old that I forgot to eat, as someone does.
It was strange to see the same tutorial structures north and south, and then wilderness. I didn't have time to check the sign out of the northern structure. (Was it identical? or only go south?)
See you later around a berry bush!
Below the enigmatic title, here you have an effective tutorial.
(I mean enigmatic for people who do not master slang expressions. I had to check out your "kms", for "kilometers" didn't make any sense. We foreigners learn another english!)
I wish new players read this tutorial.
Thank you startafight. I felt the same frustration so many times...
Yes please M. Rohrer !
Please fix this bow drill !
The Flint Tipper Maniac ruined my life more than once, and many people died because of this despicable griefer : no fire no food, no fire no tools, and running into the wild to craft a new fire bow can be deadly (well, I stepped on a snake, who doesn't?)
Or maybe you encountered twice the same non-english speaking streamer trying to tell his wiewers something about berries, filming his intro for a tutorial video in another language...
What kind of needs?
Art !
Every village, every tribe could gather around a totem of some sort.
Maybe ice sculpture in toundra, ceramic in swamps, wood in grasslands, stone in badlands, rabbit bones totem in prairies, carved dead trees in desert...
We need food for the soul, expression of our identity ! So totems and tree carving should be a thing, leaving free space for personalisation (like we have the different types of crowns). The stone totem in badlands could either become wolf statue, or bear, or ironman, etc.
Another very satisfying thing is landart. I already enjoy placing things in an aesthetic maner around rose bushes for instance. More ornamental plants and objects would be welcome.
I have two ideas to help new players adopt the game.
1) On the login page, you could have an option to play on a tutorial server. To play a mini game with a npc teacher or bubbles with hints to learn the basics: eat a berry, make a sharp stone, dig a wild carrot, make a basket, put things and take off basket, and so on. Each step of learning controls and basic stuffs gives you a point, to complete your mini lesson of survival before being born for real.
2) In the main game, we need a real school, with a black board on wich you can click to learn recipes. I mean a pause button so you don't die reading. And real players-teachers that you could recognise from ther outfit : a special hat (like the toque for the cook), or glasses, something to notify they are willing to have an apprentice.
I would like to know Jason's opinion about fathers in OHOL.
It is really interesting to see this topic reemerge again and again. Maybe male players feel something disturbing in the birthing and breastfeeding mechanics?
Personally I like the way things are in game with single mothers and immaculate conception.
I would greatly dislike to have mariage implemented in OHOL. (The one and only time I commited in role playing a mariage in game, I was murdered by a jalous rival of my husband, for me it was pointless and annoying.) Role playing and relationships are not the point of interest of this game. And it is already difficult enough to continue a family without adding a male and female condition.
But I agree that the interactions are really interesting, like being raised by a grandmother, or an uncle, or taking care of another player even if he is not your child, whatever, sometimes you can share nice things with other people. There is no reason to implement a way to show it or write it down. Anyway everything we do in this game is meant to be ephemeral.
Very interesting plans.
Thank you Morti for sharing your ideas in such a clear, educational maner.
I was an anomynous guy in an anonymous family, working hard. My young brother asked me to plant roses around a grave. It took me ages, but I love roses, so I did it. It seemed so important for my brother. I even placed a flat stone.
Now that I died of starvation contemplating the grave, decorated with my roses and several bowls full of water and berries in a geometric pattern, now I wonder :
who was Josh ? Why was he so important for you brother ?
Sorry I cannot remember how to post links to show lineage.
I love the new gardening and cooking.
But what about the POTATOES ? They deserve a better place in the kitchen. Nobody ever bothers baking them. I think a handfull of fries to eat in small portions (for small stomachs) or on the go (for travellers) would be nice. Maybe you call them chips.
I also like to use potatoes in my vegetable pies, and in stews or soups of course...
In my familly, we fry potatoes in duck fat : it is delicious ! But olive oil is an option WHEN WE FINALLY GET TO GROW TREES...
Thank you for the new interesting and enjoyable content.
About all seeds
Seeds everywhere is a pain. Almost invisible seeds worst.
You want realistict things, why not, I won't argue. But in real life, people would never spread out their seeds all over the ground.
We need more storage options. I saw someone propose clay pots for seeds, very good idea.
I imagine shelves : add a plank to an adobe wall (only east-west maybe). On a shelf we could place three items like seed pots, bowls, plates, baskets, tools.
I agree with the idea of stacking several seeds too.
About beans
The dry beans in a bowl are a problem for me. It seems that the bowl with one (or several) dry bean cannot be moved ? You should be able to walk with a partial bowl of something (like berries) to collect more and fill it from another plant (or when cleaning all the seeds on the floor of the base). One by one it's a painful waste of time. So left click to fill or pick the bowl and right click to empty, if possible ?
And the green bean should be greener to differenciate better from dry bean (both on plant and item in bowl). Real green beans are very green (and delicious, they should fill more hunger and be a valid food option).
About cabbage seeds
So small I just hate them (but the purple cabbage is wonderfull).
Griefer or not griefer, that is not the question.
Yesterday, I had a very bad life in a small settlement because of one person who wanted at all cost to avoid murder in our family. I had a simple goal : to make a saw for wheels and buckets, and I told everyone, him in particular, what my plan was. I spent ages gathering iron, making bow and arrow far in the wild and coming back with the goose to oil the file, EXPLAINING THAT I HAD HIDDEN BOW AND ARROW VERY FAR. At the last second, this person turned my blade blank into a f** key ! There was no iron left. I let myself starve in front of the forge (having said a very rude word in my language)...
Sad, bitter evening. I was about to swear to myself that I would never play again.
Today I spent three hours playing with nice people, teaching, cooking, crafting, collaborating, sharing exquisite meals, cuddling lambs and butchering sheeps... Each time ending my game with a large smile in my face.
The flaw of this game is that it is a MULTIPLAYER game. People are annoying, to say the less. Griefers are annoying, rude people are annoying, roleplaying people are annoying, noobs are annoying, "pro" players are annoying, etc.
But at the same time, people are the reason why we have such a rich and colorfull and unique and touching experience whith OHOL. Most of the time.
I mean, I feel sometimes what you feel, scOrp (and anyone downhearted by multiplayer reasons). But please come back and try again, maybe next time you will be lucky and happy again.
See you around a berry bush!
Mom !
I am very pleased to know that you saw my message. I was so sad to witness your death, then my little sister's, that I couldn't resolve to give up. I decided to spend my life planting berries and flowers to honor my dear mother. Thanks to the bowl you made and a nice pile of snow nearby.
I hope that a new Eve will find the berries and start a family in our spot. Even if nobody ever sees it, I was happy to spend my life creating a beautiful garden for my brave single mother.
Love,
Louie
Unfortunately it is true : milkweed no longer regrows.
You have to plant it again each time, pretty much like wheat. Doesn't matter anymore to wait for a fruiting milkweed, if you already have a large supply of seeds.
So now you need to farm milkweed carefully. Pick a fruiting plant, extract many seeds from its debris. Find new soil (composting is very soon necessary). Replant new milkweed after you harvest. Debris will turn into stump after ten (?) minutes, then stump will turn into nothing after another few (?) minutes.
I found hilarious, recently, to be a baby born in a desert : my mother swiftly got me a full set of clothes and cooked me on a big fire. I didn't even last one year, and had no time to run away or tell anything...
Maybe it was a cannibal tribe ?
The rose is beautiful and I like to have a quest for snow pile in order to plant a flower garden.
(This is my Happy impression.)
But I discovered the hard way that milkweed is now vanishing after harvest, no matter the growing stage you pick it, and this is quite frustrating. If only you could water it and babysit like berry bushes ! No, it's gone, go find more soil and replant. The worst is that it's a sneaky little change at the bottom of the list...
(That is my Grumpy impression.)
Nevertheless, I still love your game Jason.
PS The new characters are exquisitely ugly
To Daisy Mary
My dearest aunt and wife,
I was born in a city in ruins and my mother died few seconds after naming me Nike. We were all babies and young children, except one young man who killed all the adults (poor lost soul).
I owe you my life, for you fed me carrots, smart little girl. You decided to marry me and you required seven children.
As soon as I could drive a handcart, I went away looking for wheat. We needed flour to feed our kids cakes, and straw for your handbags and for compost. I'm sorry it took me so long. I'm sorry your kids came to you only by the strenght of thoughts and not actual tenderness.
You died before me, with bitter words in your lovely mouth (Tell Nike I never loved him). I know, I forgive you. I missed you too. I ran all the time to come back to you.
Finally, too late, I came back with wheat to bake and seeds to plant. I began a compost factory between the sheep pen and the south wall. One young lady, I hope your daughter, was taking it over as I faded away.
I was not the husband you wanted, but I did my best to provide for our family. My life was a rush against time, but meaningfull, usefull, and full of you.
Thank you for this life.
Lovingly,
Nike
It is so interesting !
I am so excited to be able to have "knews" of the future of my children, I can't stop watching the trees ! The last words of my dear son let me imagine a psychopath is draining the ponds that I just tried to refill minutes ago, causing my death, for I forgot to refill myself in shock discovering such a stupid offspring in a very nice family.
Thank you Ô Jason for offering us so much !
(or was it Jude?)
Dear Mom,
I was your Hope and you ordered me to stay alive. You ordered me to stay in the desert patch and farm cactus. I promised and I did. Strange, lonely, peaceful life. I had three kids : May, my boy, June and July the girls. I really stayed where you told me until it was obvious that nobody in the family was still alive. I told our story to the children and taught them your lesson : swamp south, rabbits west and east. We started the farm, and potery, and smithing was ready to go.
When I died of old age, we had one young man and one young female alive and active.
Mom, I hope you rest in peace.
Yours, lovingly and respectfuly,
Hope
