#251 Main Forum » Suggestion: Leashing domesticated animals » 2018-10-17 23:41:16

I find animal husbandry in OHOL to be quite frustrating at times.

To date, you can only lead lambs and the bison calf. This is of cause very good, but there need to be more options.

1. Domestic Calfs needs to be leashed in order to make a transfer of livestock to new pens possible as it is with lambs. I would say the inability to do so presently is a bug in itself.

2. Grown animals such as mature sheep, cows, pigs and the domesticated mouflon and bison also good candidates for leashing in case they escape the pens (griefers) or you want to move them to a different settlement/enclosure. It also gives you a way to move the annoying cows away from the common workspace.

You can leash these animals irl, so why not give us the ability to do so in-game?

The ability to leash these animals also makes future trading, transfer and animal husbandry more realistic and manageable.

Someone with the last name Otting named the child.

#253 Re: Main Forum » Be smart as a mother please! » 2018-10-17 12:30:33

Whenever I take the role of a wetnurse I stand in the fire with the children and instruct them to walk out to the side when at 2 bars. So far it has been the most effective food saver since I also limit my own food waste. Although I can see how someone might think you loose a worker to this profession, but it is more efficient to have a designated wetnurse to free up work for others. Remember to switch often so as to not get too old.

Potjeh, you don't live in America, where murder is PG, bare breasts or a single F-word are PG-13, and anything more (including two F-words) are R-rated.

As I understand it, softcore pornography (naked people having sex, or full-frontal nudity) is shown on the public airwaves in certain parts of Europe.

I can promise you that no public airwaves will ever show child-nudity so that argument is very weak.

The reason why Europe has been so relaxed with natural nudity in the past is that natural nudity is nothing to be ashamed of, but we don't go around drawing dicks and vaginas on cartoon characters, that's just weird. That's a distinction you do not seem to comprehend.

Real people? No problem. Cartoony? Pervy.

The game "to date" is always the best version.

#256 Re: Main Forum » Ice Holes and Dead Dogs » 2018-10-08 12:28:52

You can see massive fields of migrating ice holes going over the roads in some towns. It is quite distracting.

+1 to all of them. But it seems Jason would rather fix what is unintentionally convenient for us than removing the stuff that unintentionally makes it inconvenient.

#257 Re: Main Forum » Why is a Home HUD indicator displaying after respawn as a baby? » 2018-10-08 12:18:09

It is a bell in another town signalling its location. Most likely the closest bell, but doesn't have to be.

#258 Re: Main Forum » I didn't want this life » 2018-10-07 12:30:03

Anyone who dont want to live in a bustling settlement are free to wander into the wilderness and make an eve camp when they are old enough. Bring someone with you if you want. That iis how we get clusters of villages and more "trading" opportunity so it is not a bad thing at all.

I think the game would also be better if we as a community were better at assigning jobs and creating structured societies with perks. Having some sort of administration tracking all the needs is also a necessity, distributing food and giving equipment to those who work etc.

Well the joke is that every ä is replaced with an e. I know how to spell tyvm

The correction was not for you. I am not oblivious to third-grade spelling tyvm.

Still haven't heard of it.

That's the beauty of the board.  You could put the most important stuff on it when its relevant, an take down posts when they are no longer needed.

Yes, but what would happen to the posts that aren't needed? Currently paper does not decay.

In addition to the suggestions above, I would really like to have linen clothes. Growable flax turned into linen would add some sort of base clothing that is not fur and wool.

Maybe some cruder instruments other than a guitar? Flutes, drums and harp?

This is an interesting case.

The Pine walls were the first ones that I added to the game.

I've made pine walls in real life, and it takes a ton of work.  There are many steps, and LOTS of rope.  (Look up lashing.)

This is not a normal crafting game, with balanced recipes (150 wood plus 75 stone makes a hatchet, but 100 wood plus 125 stone makes a pick axe).

This is a maker simulation.  Watch Primitive Technology on YouTube.  It's all about steps.

You can't build a fire by rubbing two sticks together.  There are a LOT more steps than that.  The game includes all those steps.

People say, "Can't we start a fire with flint and steel?"  As if you could just use those on a log and make a fire.  Flint and steel, in my experience, only works if you have VERY fine tinder, like cotton fluff.  I'm pretty sure they would not work at all on juniper bark tinder (though I haven't tried it).  A hot ember does work on juniper/cedar/redwood bark tinder (I've done it).

Realism means that some things are unbalanced.  This is part of the march of technology.  Adobe walls require no rope, and are simply better walls than lashed pine panels.

There's a reason why we don't see lashed pine panels all over the place in real life....

Right, but domestication in the game is less than a few years. Who knew that sheep, cows and pigs evolved through one generation of a domesticated wild animal of a different species.

#266 Re: Main Forum » What became of the Hurst family? » 2018-09-26 13:06:58

I was Louis Hurst, Gen 13. When I died we finished a walled-in kitchen and began building a road through the farm. It was a nice place. I buried my mother, Nami Hurst, near her stew garden as she was the designated cook.

We had problems with some saboteur that wanted to build a teleporter. Such a waste of resources and not to mention ugly. She started killing people so we had to finish her.

Coincidentally, I was born as Louis Rosa when I respawned and there built a bakery with two other fellows. It's funny how names get reused so much despite there being a big list of names.

Nothing wrong with a being little mainstream. Extremists who wouldn't touch a thing if 5 people were using it are so dull.

#268 Re: Main Forum » Can we get Husband/Wife Gravemark? (Or Lover) » 2018-09-25 23:57:34

It would add something to the roleplaying aspect of the game if we could have informal marriages between characters that show up in the family tree as a line of text similarly to "was killed by ...".

I think that's the winner. It would create some kind of incitement to do a more permanent structure than trash pits.

Maybe we could go a step further and add a looooong timer on the unfilled trash pits as well? Like 10 hours and then they "decay".

Never been murdered because of something like that. How bad can a functional and aesthetic structure be? It doesn't hurt anyone.

#271 Re: Main Forum » Stop making lazy sheep pens. » 2018-09-25 18:22:26

I don't think we should design our towns are griefers. If they wanna ruin it, fine. We'll just cover the fence and add some sheep to it again. Who cares? Griefers just want attention.

We need to focus on building nice societies. No one has built a city with structure, and most just build buildingless villages with pits everywhere. Also teleporters and these Stonehedge farms. It's ugly. Let's build something pretty.

#272 Re: Main Forum » Popcorn and Domestic Saplings » 2018-09-24 20:33:04

I see popcorn everywhere. I guess there are better uses for dried corn such as feeding animals and making stew, but sure you go again and make popcorn. It doesn't hurt anyone as long as you make some seed and replant the bastards.

You're right about the saplings though, rarely see any sapling farms around these days. But then again, how often do we try to make signs with letters?

Sauerkraut is a luxury item. It's far down the tech-tree, but it's not that big of a deal. Adds another type of food to eat for older kiddos as well and maybe it will stop some adults from eating berries. Here's to hoping.

#273 Re: Main Forum » Steam: I've decided to do it » 2018-09-24 20:12:20

Beware the growth pain. So many new players will probably come and have no idea what's going on. It's gonna be chaos.

May I suggest updating the tutorial to give more meat on the bones to the new players?

I'd say we need oil and such for fires that can last in rain, more shelter options and easier clothing first before adding such an element to the game. Otherwise people would have to sit indoors or freeze outside while it rains, and many years from your lives could be "lost" to rain. People would fight for clothes.

No comment on the rain, but flax or cotton would be a good addition for easy textiles. They would be grown like any other crop, and people have been using them for centuries. In fact, flax is thought to be one of the first plants to be cultivated by man. It is actually used for both linens (from the fibers) and oil (from the seeds), so it would cover two of your points. I think it would fit into the game well. Cotton could be used in the same way.

I do agree with you that Flax would be nice to have, but seeing how Jason doesn't want us to be comfortable in our existence ever, I doubt that he'll implement something so stable as Flax.
